Status: offline 		Well, this is a banner day for me; seeksfemslave took me to task and Lam found me a loophole!
 
Anyway...serously? People who have learning disabilities, etc. need to put that in their sig lines?  WTF?  That's just preposterous.
 
And you guys using 3 point font; hey, can I ask for size 4?  I am having more and more trouble reading the screen.
 
I think one thing the thread has uncovered is the sorrow we can inadvertently cause someone by criticizing their writing  and why we should all hold off on the snarky button a little more'n than perhaps we do.  No one should be induced to reveal they are laboring under any sort of personal burden just to respond to someone else's ideas about proper writing style.
 
For my money, Lam is the resident linguist on this board, and as long as I've been here I've never seen him make a snarky remark to another member about their writing style.  If he can put with the rest of us....and I'm sure we have all written badly-made posts...I know I have...seems to me the rest of us can as well.
 
And to the member who posted about the bad writing in profiles....I once received an email that read something like' hi, i'm dave i'm dominate wanna chat?  i'll be waiting to here from u'  and then read in his profile that he claimed to be especially well-educated, and so wrote him back and asked him which one was the lie, he he.
 
I think men in their 40's and 50's immitating the text speech of UMs look pretty ridiculous, but hey, that's just me.
 
And I still miss my slashy speech, but O well.
 
And that'll be my last sentence here in this particular post...except to the Polish=speaking member...how many words for 'f**k' in Polish?
 
If there are 98 for 'to shit', iI'd hope there were about 1,000 for 'to f**k'', lol.

The only way I have to understand what someone else says is through their writing. If they use imprecise words, or use words wrongly then we are likely to misunderstand them.

I've got a pet peeve in this area also, equal to the one I have about people who put up a thread but don't give enough info to offer useful suggestions until page four. It isn't my job to read their minds. If they want help then it is incumbent upon them to write clearly enough and with enough background information that those who would like to help can do so.

I don't know about you but I get pissed when someone is given the same response by ten people based on the info they first gave, and then whines that it doesn't address their real issue. If they want the real issue addressed, then put it up in post one and make sure that the post makes sense. Because if someone can read something the wrong way, they will. Murphy again.

I would just use the word advice.

Quite true. Life is crazy and hectic and busy and people have priorities that do not include improving their grammar skills. I'm OK with that, as I'm an imperfect being myself. Sure there are written errors that annoy me to a degree, but unlike others, it is not my goal to criticize people for being imperfect in their skills (or lack of skills, for that matter). As another poster pointed out, you pretty much kick ass (is that a grammatically correct term? ) on the rest of us, linguistically, but we don't see you snarking around to others about it, and I'm pretty sure you don't spend your time emailing people advising them against coming across as a 5th grader.

There's class and there's lack of class. I'd rather write poorly than be an asshole, ya know?

It is really quite straightbackward advisage is more than one instance of advice. Splodes is the new version of explodes.

Hi, Des, you make a good point (or is it, you made your point well? heh). Misused words often catch my attention and can annoy me as well, but I'd say to those of us aware of the proper uses of their/there/they're, etc., can we really not figure out what someone is saying when they misuse them? It's one thing to genuinely misunderstand. It's another to be a criticizing stickler. There are some very wise posters here, from whom I have gained a great deal of insight, whose posts are filled with grammatical (and spelling) errors. My point is, if I were overly caught up in how they wrote, rather than the message they were sharing, I would be missing out on a lot.

Yes, but this is where asking for clarity comes in handy.

I don't get pissed, really. I might shrug and move on. But yes, it can definitely be a waste of time to respond in depth to someone's OP, only to have them come back and say "Oh wait, THAT'S not what I meant at ALL."

But that's a different issue entirely than using incorrect grammar.

But in my defence, I did draw a distinction between just posting, and emailing. Emails should be proofread and if you're unsure, then you should check first. But posting is more like conversation. It isn't uncommon to use half sentences in conversation or not specify which their/there/they're you mean.

But I view emails as more akin to serious writing and therefore demand more in them.
