I can't ever buy a mink coat thanks to PETA and the animal rights' extemists.  Gawd, anymore I'd be worried about being assualted just going into a fur salon.

So, where the hell are they as Japan hunts the species of whales to the brink of extinction?   I really like whales.  They're fascinating to me.  Biggest mammals on earth, communicating through water with those lovely songs.  They're worth saving.

For me. PETA has, and always will, stand for:

People
Eating
Tasty
Animals

The reason PETA's pantys aren't in a wad about the whales is that they are very selective about who they pick on.  Any whiney little bitch can throw paint at a woman wearing a fur but it takes real balls to put yoursellf in front of a Japanese harpoon canon.

Thank DOG for Green Peace or there might not be any whales left to worry about.  Now THAT'S a group with the courage of their convictions!  Yeah, I know, Green Peace is a "terrorist" group.  But I don't see too many other groups willing to ram a whaling ship with their own!

PETA is one of the most hypocrital "animal rights" groups.  They have demonstrated time and again that they value animals over people.  Google them sometime when you're bored.  Here's a link to get you started: http://www.petakillsanimals.com/  Lots of good stories there but my favorite is that PETA has "demanded" an end to the use of sheep for making insulin.  You know insulin - it's that stuff that keeps diabetics alive.  Here's the good part: Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's founder and head nutter, is herself a diabetic and is completely dependent upon insulin.  When called on this little detail she says it's OK for her because of all the animals her organization saves.  So for her, the end justifies the means.  But only for her...

It's amazes me that Japan still allows commercial whaling.  There's not one product made from the body of a whale that isn't already created synthetically.  Sadly, whales just aren't important enough for any US administration to teally take a stand about.

BTW:  Mink are not an endangered species.  They are raised for their fur much like cattle are are raised for meat.  I will admit, though, that the mink ranch industry does not have much of a reputation when it comes to how they treat the little critters while they're alive.  You would think they'd want to take better care of an animal they're depending on for their livelyhood.

you don't need a mink coat. who do you think you are? Cindy McCain?

where a regular coat like the rest of us.

And I'm sure PETA doesn't have unlimitied resources to do EVERYTHING they want. But they do great work when they can. Many people enjoy all kinds of different species as you say you like whales, so even a person like you has a lot to be thankful to them for.

Minks are sometimes kept in cruel conditions, but no more so than most animal produce.  I find it pretty lame to bemoan the state of mink and fur, when good whips are made from leather, floggers etc.  Do people look ethically at their tools?  Not so much.

Whaling is an entirely different kettle of fish(pun kinda intended), which is why peta haven't the balls to stick their noses into it.

Neither should be abused, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that peta picks and choses.

You mean, like a leather one
Or one sewn in a sweat shop by a minor or for 10pence an hour by an adult?
Or one that comes from the wool of animals, no better treated than mink?
Do you ethically source you clothes like 'the rest of us'.

that's stating the obvious. So does the police department, the FBI, CIA, and every other organization you can think of.

please. That's the weak argument the off-kilter extreme conservatives always try to use. Sorry but I don't have to live in a hut in the forest to say and know that the unnecessary torture of animals is wrong.

Of course it's wrong, as you stated above, it's stating the obvious.  But you have not answered my question.  Do you ethically source your clothing like 'the rest of us'?(Whoever the rest of us is supposed to be).
Of course, you do not have to respond.

big difference here. Cattle are not killed for their skins. Minks are. Cattle are used for human consumption.

There really isn't much of a difference holly.  Some cattle farms mistreat their animals.  But on a larger more rounded note, I wasn't being specific to cattle.  Leather comes from many sources - cattle, kangeroo etc... leather isn't always a byproduct of meat consumption.  Certain herds are raised for their skin.

when you have a "speciality" product such as kangeroo, alligator, etc it is noted as such to justify the high price (and to make it more desirable *blech*). Leather from beef cattle is the bi-product of the animal butchered as food.

I absolutely get that much of the leather is made from cattle biproducts.  However it isn't always bi product source and unless you specifically ethically source your leather and other animal based products, then you are being hypocritical in taking a 'fur is wrong' stance.  Animals are farmed for insulin - there is yeast based insulin but it's rarer.  But animal insulin, that's ok?

I took candy's post as a 'why pick and choose post' - she never said fur was great and whaling isn't - shes saying why does one organisation make people feel guilty of one and not the other.

i am hypocritical for saying killing an animal to deck someone out in a fur coat is wrong? Cool...call me a hypocrite...i will wear the title with pride.
Animals are killed and used for various things other than fur:  insulins, valves, arteries, organs, etc. and i have no problem with this.

The fact is the body of a mink or a fox is used for nothing once their skin is removed.
