Actually, I think you'll find that once something is posted in a forum for public consumption, it becomes everybody's business.  But perhaps you are new to this whole "Internet" thing?

perhaps you misunderstood what I wrote. Ms. Subatomic311 claims that someone else does not need another object. that is a ridiculous position to take as how can one individual every decide what another individual needs? values are subjective, desires are subjective. trying to force one's opinions about something as simple as a fur coat onto another person because of self-righteousness is not a mentality that should be encouraged or praised.

No, I understood exactly what you wrote.  Once you put your opinion out there, people are free to critique it.  I happen to agree that no one needs a fur coat.  People who aren't members of native groups who wear fur coats generally do it only to feed their shallow vanity.  Quite frankly, who the hell are you to decide what mentality should or should not be encouraged?  You are, of course, welcome to speak your opinion and, in turn, have it critiqued.  You have been hoist by your own petard, as your values and desires are just as subjective as anyone else's and therefore no more or less worthy.  No one appointed you guardian of what ought or ought not to be expressed.  Do *you* understand?

Edited to add:  Those of you who agreed with variation's post are basically saying that you're intolerant of other's opinions, in the guise of being tolerant.  Doesn't that strike you as being a bit hypocritical?

I would be interested in why tolerance is being suggested.  Tolerance is about accepting anothers view when it isn't your own but on the understanding that it is someone elses choice/decision etc.  It doesn't infringe on your own personal space.  Yeah I am cool about being intolerant to someone who verbally or physically tries to force another into doing something 'that they need' because the think it's 'what they need' - that is not their own personal choice via guilt or any other means.  That is dictatorship.

Some food for thought. For humans to live something else has to die( plant, animal or living organisums). Let's see PETA refute that.

I do not ethically source my clothing.

My main ethical issue that effects my buying decisions is non-consentual slavery. I try to limit the products I buy that contribute to non-consentual slavery. However - I can limit myself to fair trade coffee, American grown tea and slave free chocolate. BUT - there is not as much I can do about clothes. MOST American sold clothing comes from countries with ridiculous labor laws. Every now and then a company will piss me off so bad that I will boycott that one company, but it's kind of like pissing on a forest fire.

bitching and moaning about mink ( a farmed animal) by people who wear leather or eat meat is ridiculous, imo. Unless they are personally offended by mink farm conditions and make that one of your issues - or feel it is okay to eat meat but not to wear animal products. I had one friend who said they wouldn't wear mink but they would wear leather, because you can eat the beef the leather comes from, and, hence, no waste. I pointed out to them that they were wearing kid leather gloves - from goat. They said, sure, they don't eat goat, but others, from other cultures, do, so the meat does not HAVE to go to waste. I told them, yes, yes, it does. The process for harvesting goat leather is incompatable with the process for harvesting the meat for human consumption.

I know we all get to have our own little issues, and I get that. But I see absolutely nothing positive that PETA does. They are against owning pets, you know - the non-consentual slavery of animals. But they operate the biggest kill shelter in NYC, advertising it as a 'cruelty free shelter'. They espouse their rediculous views to children through the public schools, without parental consent, sending home nasty, obscene comics about 'where your food comes from.' They want a world pet free and 100% vegitaration, and, yes, they have zero concern for human problems. They just fucking annoy the hell out of me.

Actually, as a former PETA member (high school has actually caused huge issues with immigration and such because it's on a few watch lists), I just have to say they aren't against pets, they're against puppy mills and breeders. Which I totally support, however they kill more animals than they save, and are a for profit business. There are lots of reasons to hate PETA, no reason to make shit up.

PETA is against pets, as far as i know.
like i said, when i lived in norfolk, where the headquarters is, they went around releasing people's pets because they think we shouldn't have them. scores of dogs were hit in the roads, lots of kids never got their pets back. it was crap.
another issue with PETA though is that they change their stances on certain issues like day and night. depending on who's in charge of what office and some particular time, they'll say "oh pets are okay" or "no! no one should have pets!"
among other things

Well again, I haven't been a member for about 5 years, but back when I was, the official stance was that pets are all good as long as you didn't buy them at a pet store. We were encouraged to adopt as many as we could take care of. They just call them "companion animals" instead of pets.

I can't seem to talk Master into pet play very often or much. I wonder if I could be a companion animal, instead?

Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and PETA and other enviromental fascists are only interested in picking on easy targets and simple slogans for the simple people who fill their coffers. The whole green thing is a business, a con - (aww look at the baby seals!) - science wringing, blackmailing bullying load of crap.
They have targetted our kids with all this sentimental tripe, and once given any sort of credence at all the agenda expands rapidly into areas of your life where your personal freedom to do, eat, wear, drive what you like counts for nothing.
Whales are doing fine, there are loads of them, it;s horrible when the Japs, norwegans, and faroe islanders kill the poor things, but any sort of hunting has a death at the end of it, it's a shame, but nothing lives forever.
Hundreds of people are killed every day in the USA if the statistics are anything to go by, yet no one gives a fig about that.
So don't worry too much about Moby, when kids are disappearing off the streets.

...contrary to popular belief, you can care about more than one issue. Caring about animals doesn't mean you care about people any less, so that's kind of a dick thing to rant about.

the fact that you stick up for animals doesn't mean that you care about humans less. on the contrary, most of the people that i've associated with have also cared about human rights issues. it's an issue of RIGHTS in general, what basic rights does any sentient life form deserve. just because humans treat each other like crap doesn't mean that we shouldn't also do something about the OTHER life forms that get treated like crap.
for instance, we were watching a video about the water crisis around the world. in Rajasthan, India, a Coca-Cola plant is taking water from an aquifer that is partially on their property to make pop to ship to the big cities. but everyone knows that aquifers know no property lines, when water is taken out on one side, the water level in the whole aquifer goes down. People miles and miles away who have depended on that aquifer for life for hundreds of years now have to dig something like 20 extra feet down every time they go to get water. Coca-Cola says they're doing nothing  wrong taking the water on their property, but in reality that water belongs to everyone. It belongs to all the humans there who need it. But not only that, this Indian philosopher woman brought up the moral issue of taking the water from EVERY life form that needs it, whether it be humans or trees or whatever.
It's an issue of interconnectedness.

And truth be told, when you treat animals terribly in order to save on your production bottom line, humans end up harmed either in the process or from the result. How many people became ill with mad-cow disease because meat producers think it's more cost effective to grind up dead sheep and dead cows and feed them BACK to cows?  How many HUMANS have their quality of life diminished by the prescence of an industrial hog farm? Ever hear of pfiesteria? What about the growing "dead zones," particularly in the Gulf of Mexico?  Have you ever smelled a small scale family-run hog farm? You can smell those things for miles. An  industrial one is something else altogether. How many humans are injured or killed in slaughterhouses where the lines run so fast they have to process an animal almost every minute. Where animals are being dismembered while fully conscious and are kicking and flailing -- humans get hurt, too. How many humans are starving to death because their governments can make more money selling their grain to us to feed our animals than they can selling it to their own people who need food?
If you treat animals better, you treat humans better. If you treat humans better, you treat animals better.

And i'd never go so far as to say "whales are doing fine." that's just irresponsible altogether. there are species of whales, like the minke and eastern pacific greys, who's populations are actually not doing too bad. but for the vast majority of whale species, while their populations are definitely rebounding BECAUSE of moratoriums on hunting, they are certainly still well in the red. they're still considered endangered or threatened, depending on the species.

and lastly, is it necessary to use racial epithets? japanese is very easy to spell.

they are not about saving animals but about a political agenda..they collect millions of dollars in donations and a fraction on a percent may actually go in rescuing an animal ..if anything they end up doing more harm to animals than they have helped

Anybody see Whale Wars Sunday night?  I appreciate what they're doing but what a bunch of f**k-ups!  I get the feeling that none of them will survive their own incompetence!

I plan to keep watching - can't wait to see what gets broken next!

That's such a fresh and clever joke. I don't think I've ever heard that before, not even previously in this thread! You sir, are a master of both satire and word play. Kudos.
