A couple of my friends made a pretty interesting statement -- are the cheering FOR Obama or are they cheering that the Republicans/Bush are out of office.

Also, i think people need to acknowledge something, It took Bush a while to piss people off, so the the world has hated us for 8 years is kinda a desperate and wrong assessment.

I think we are bloody glad that bush is out, i couldnt believe he got in for a second term. However i genuienly dont think the elation would have been as great had mcain got him, I certainly dont know anyone that liked him, all the people I know have been saying thank god obama got in, not thank god bush is out.

I agree colouredin.
We ALL know bloody well, the world would not be roaring and cheering this
loud for a Senator McCain.
They are cheering for the first Black American President.

Wow, Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

And here I thought they were cheering because they thought we picked the best man to lead the country. I thought they were cheering because they think the new administration is going to bring change in the US policies. And now you say it's because he is the first black....if that was their only problem with Bush, then we coulld have painted him years ago and everyone would have been happy.

Ditto!

MzMia,

I didn't say they would be cheering for McCain, why do you keep making this about him being black?  My question was pretty simple, and in all actuality had nothing to do with his color but with his platform.  At least that's what the discussion was when it came up, as many people didn't vote for him because of his color.   If it were a white man who won as a democrate and the world was cheering i would have asked the same question.

MzMia, i hate to tell you this but you are making this concept of his being Black an issue that is insulting to the Man.    In other words, you have pretty much stated it doesn't matter what the Man stands for, what he can do, or anything his campaign was based on but he was ONLY elected because he is black and that's all the world is seeing.    Even Obama didn't make his campaign about his blackness, perhaps just perhaps you may want to STOP making his win about it and instead make his win what it was ABOUT THE MAN.  Which is what the question i asked was based upon, him the Man or the fact he isn't a republican.

To me, the fact that you keep making it all about him being black is insulting him as the Man who won the election based on his campaign that wasn't color driven, the Democratic party, and to me black people who should be seen for more than the color they are but seen for the substance of the people they are, and every person who voted for him because of his platform and not his color.

Perhaps your need to make this all about his color is your denial of the actuality of why he was elected.

Personally i would have been happy if he was green with purple spots, however you cant claim that voting in a black president for the first time isnt a big deal its historical whether you like it or not, its historical because it hasnt happened before. However i would be cheering just as loudly if he were white/indian/male/female/young/old/rich/poor it doesnt really matter.

colouredin,

Thank you for giving your opinion on my question.  Its hard in this day and age because of the extreme dislike world wide of our current administration what the acceptance of him is for -- his platform or that he isn't republican.  Much of his platform was that McCain was another Bush, so it was an interesting statement that i thought would be an interesting discussion in this topic since it accesses people all over the world,  but i didn't realize it was about him being black again.

our capitalistic system that, until now, mostly rewarded achievment, and "success" was earned not a right or something to be "taken" from another by mandate.

Let’s be accurate here. Reward always goes to success. The problem is that our government likes to reward the success of greed and deceit; from the “welfare” system, up through.

However, I do agree with the sentiment that “the world does not love America.” Most/many don’t seem to understand America, but then, neither do many Americans.

I laughed when one of Mr. Obama’s campaign helpers brought up “the American dream”. My response, “which American, which dream? When some American’s dream is to squash out other American’s dreams; I can’t say I’m for the dream.

It does mean a lot to a lot of people that an African American got elected to the highest office in the land. Why would anyone argue aginst this simple fact? Time to rejoice, not to be bitter.

This sentiment changed radically on the night of November 4th - as a non-American, I can vouch for this.

Of course it is a big deal. For one thing...the next time I tell my friends son that he can be anything when he grows up, even the POTUS. He can't say "the US would never vote for a black man"   Now he has proof that his dreams can come true and we were not lying to him.

I would conceed that people can be very very very moved by the media and face value. McCain has a similar accent to bush, is a similar age and is of the same party, that would almost definatly impact some peoples opinion of him. The dislike of bush is pretty intense both on a peronal and national level over here, and people are gullible, they believe what they read in the papers (link between bin laden and sadam anyone?)

However personally my experiance has been largely of people with a real interest in american politics, i used to go on protest marches against the war etc, so all of them have a more informed basis for opinion. And they are all currently cheering

Mia, I was going to post to you to be humble.

But in light of the negative reply,  I say rub it in.

Bush himself promised no nation building, and an exit strategy.  How can one not view mccain is bushes 3rd term?

here we have obama who does not run around on his lady.  so give it a rest as to how fucked we are.  WHAT are you really going to do about it?   protest?

let me remind you that the iron grip and over power of the fed has been upon us for quite some time.  and if the government has too much power, sweety, why didnt we remedy that long ago?

the shoe now is on the other foot.  so bend overrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!    (to the antagonast, not mia)

I want to be eloquant here, bollocks. Sorry but i lost faith in Americans, i remember looking at a site where people held plaques appologising. Of course I am admiring the choice that you made, but its the american people who made it, it didnt just happen, so yes inevitably my opinion of america has changed its as another post said, i have hope.

I agree with you , and think that anyone who reads anything other than what is shown on fox or cnn, knows that that US just got our second chance, similar to the world approval/support we received after sept 2001.   M

America is a major influence whether we like it or not, currently we are liking it a lot more simply because Obama is willing to address world affairs and take some economic action. We're not naive. He still has to prove himself. We do however believe he will try.

grins, colouredin,

Your statement of interest in American politics made me laugh because I was telling a friend of mine about how some people were saying the rest of the world should be able to vote for our President because of the interest the world has in American Politcs and the effect on the world and he laughed and said -- did you tell them nicely, while it was a really cute concept but ummmmmm no.

I was like oh geesh.

KIDS!

Americas media only gives a myopic side of the world.  The larger world does not exist.   SOme of this is slothfulness of self- but the grid itself wants unquestion obedience to the grid.

another item, most Americans are busy trying to keep a roof over head and do not get too involved in the public governance analysis.

THANK GOD  we now turn the page. I am so ready.  You see friends from beyond US shores, I realize that what a government does to other peoples, it will do to its own,  not everyone realizes that.

Peace!

If so that is profound.  But I sorta think that boat has sailed.

We need to walk the walk for that to happen. November 4, we stood up, but now will we walk the walk?
