Considering how much the world was behind us and rooting for us after 9/11 imagine how much good will the Obama Presidency would have if a small nuke went off in LA! Wow - Then this nice United States would really be admired throughout the world - huh? Especially when President Obama's unilateral response is a chat over tea with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to discuss how to smack the hands of those evil, misunderstood terrorists.

Unilateral response?

"We will kill Bin Laden, we will crush al-Qaeda," doesn't exactly sound like a chat over tea to me or a smack on the hands of misunderstood terrorists.

Where did people get this bullshit about "making nice"?

We've talked to enemies for decades, until Bush. Were all those presidents "making nice" to someone they just thought was misunderstood?

And there's such a thing as walking away from the table with no agreement.

Further---negotiations are for heads of state; the characterizations otherwise are invented.

Thank you Bita. I am glad I was not the only one to hear that as it seems on here. I did not vote for Obama Or for McCain, but he is now our president and I will support him as such. His speach sounded like he was prepared to take over the office, and I wish him nothing but luck in the rough times ahead. I personally liked his speach.

however you cant claim that voting in a black president for the first time isnt a big deal its historical whether you like it or not, its historical because it hasnt happened before.

It does mean a lot to a lot of people that an African American got elected to the highest office in the land. Why would anyone argue aginst this simple fact? Time to rejoice, not to be bitter.

You guys just don't get it ... do!  The American election was never about race, with only a minority of whites not voting for McCain because Barack is black.  Obviously, blacks voted for Barack and would have voted for him if he was waving the old soviet flag, and I understand that...I have voted for people in my life because FINALLY there was a guy on the ballot whose last name ended in a vowel and didn't begin O'Somthing or other.  When you grow up in a ghetto, you vote for your people...right or wrong.

Barack was elected because more people felt comfortable with his demeaner, his "words", his promises, than they felt with McCain who tried to work the "issues"...and this not was a year for "issues" as Hillory found out.  She was miles ahead of Obama on the issues..but he offered "change" and stuck with that message...and it registered in the primary and in the general.

Sure there is reason to be proud of our country for electing a black man...something that would never happen on the continent or anywhere else on the planet for that matter.  The problem that over 56,000,000 voters had with Obama was his radical liberal philsophy, the lack of any record of achievement and experience on the global stage, and questions about his judgement in friends, and what that might mean for the type of appointments he is now going to make to the courts, to government agencies...etc.

Do I hate the man...no...and I am not going bonkers over the fact that Obama is my president the way liberals lost control of their minds over Bush.  Along with most Americans, we want our country to succeed and that is only going to happen if Barack succeeds.  From now on, however, he won't be able to duck reporters questions, he will have to MAKE decisions, and we all pray that the country will be able to put down the bitterness, the partisanship that has divided us, and has come from both sides of the aisle.
Every politician talks about serving all the people...every American.  Very few do...their personal agenda usually takes hold.  It remains to be seen what Barack's agenda REALLY turns out to be withhout the benefit of editing or calling an issue a "distraction".  It remains to be seen how Pelosi/Reid/Frank/Waxman et al guide the Congress...towards true bi-partisan legislation...or anti-business, anti-labor taking secret ballots away from workers choice for union or no union, bending over and holding their ankles for radical greenies, and on and on...  The way he withdraws the troops from Iraq, now that it is more than a slogan, will shape the military response of the office corps to the new Commander In Chief, and to Americans who want to give Obama a honeymoon period.
For the sake of my family and my country, I hope those of us who voted NO to Obama are proven wrong.

...you're not learning from history. What stopped the violence in Northern Ireland? An escalation in violence or refusing to negotiate or the UK government sitting down to talk with representatives of the terrorists?

I will only add a few personal facts to this fray ...

I did not vote for President-elect Obama (it irks me when people don't respect the POSITION that people hold). I believe him to be so far left that he is socialist and I don't believe that socialism is what I want in my life.

However, the majority of Americans that bothered to get up off their lazy asses has spoken and that is going to have to be good enough for me.

Now, on a personal note: I can tell you all that I am happy that President-elect Obama won for a few reasons but, I will only share one, here:

I, personally, have trouble sleeping, every night and wake up each morning thinking: "Gee, what can I do, as an American, to make other people in the world happy?"
I'm very glad that all of you people that don't have to live under the whip of possible totalitarian socialism are so happy that we do. Your opinions are noted. Now, if you're so happy about it; would anyone like to trade places with me?

I'm quite sure if that happened Obama would respond appropriately following the Bush Doctrine and invade Canada.

(They have LOTS of oil up there.)

...you're not learning from history. What stopped the violence in Northern Ireland? An escalation in violence or refusing to negotiate or the UK government sitting down to talk with representatives of the terrorists?
philo,
Can't learn from history that hasn't occurred regarding President Obama, however I can reflect upon the history of President Bush and 9/11. I remember well and also learned from the accolades and support from everywhere. The exception of course being the celebratory partying in some locations with a common religion. Should that lesson be selectively forgotten?

Anyway, Obama is my President Elect. He and the office have the same respect from me as I have for President Bush. Results will be where I learn - not the rhetoric; regardless of prior agreement or disagreement in philosophy. Any expectation reflected in a post regarding Obama comes by how he has represented himself.

It is obvious that his rhetoric is far more 'right' than is was 21 or so months ago when he began his campaign. If anything he is moving more toward positions I support than I would have expected if Senator McCain had prevailed.

Were my vote cast, as had been the case for the past three Presidential elections, for the best of two bad choices - he would have gotten my vote. Alas, I've abandoned that and moved on to voting 'No' for the current regime. As a result I didn't have one vote go to a candidate who won. However, I'm not so childish or Hollywood 'PC' to proclaim I'm leaving the country or Obama is NOT my President.

The good think about his lack of experience is that he won't have experience 'knee jerk' reaction to anything. There is a much better chance of him trying to figure out a different way than McCain ever could. He is young enough and I believe confident enough to recognize mistakes, learn from them, and come up with an 'out of the box' solution. At my age - I still believe I can do the same.

In Obama's case I truly hope to learn I've been wrong in my assessment of him, his politics, and his philosophy. I don't think it will be required for someone to point it out to me either.

Firstly: I don't live in "Joisy".

Secondly: Nice selective cognition. I said: POSSIBLE totalitarian socialism. I have believed for some time that that is where this great nation is heading and nothing I have lived through (from Viet Nam and the protests in the 60s and 70s to that horrid "Patriot" act) has disavowed me of that belief.

President-elect Obama's current (I-wanna-be-president) promises are a faaaaaaar diversion from what his voting record shows.

I believe we're screwed. But, as one American football player put it: "One guy's gonna shove it in your ass and the other guy's gonna shove it in your ass even deeper. What does it matter?"

Yep...and another football player bemoaned how he would now lose half his salary to Obama's tax increases.Jared Allen who just signed a 21.5 million dollar contract apparently did not spend much time in math classes when playing in college.Obama's tax proposals would increase his tax budren all of 3.5 %...effectively rolling back the tax cuts he got under President Bush. Bad taste to complain about your burden when in the same paper a couple of pages away...they listed his salary as part of a player salary story.

It must be tough to have to live on that much.  And with the higher taxes, he might have to buy one less Ferrarri.  How can you people be so callous?

.....well, i hope i've been right in my assessment. Wasn't really my point though. You seemed to denigrate his stated aim of talking to Iran without preconditions. i was just pointing out that one of the most intractable terrorist problems of the 20th century was solved by precisely that tactic. Therefore denigrating it seemed to me to a failure to learn from history.
