I totally agree with you, MzMia.  There should be recognition of the fact that hstory has been made, even if you don't dig his his politics.  His election is historic and it places America at the forefront of western nations again: instead of it being regarded as an overbearing, clumsy bully the US is now considered enlightened and far-sighted.  Why would any "patriot" want to do their country down?  Hmmmmm indeed.

Colouredin, i completely agree with what you stated.  I find this thread ironic in many ways.  MzMia, just an observation, but you really may want to go back and read many of the threads and posts you have made about him, it seems you are very focused on the Man's color.  So just a thought, perhaps your perception of comments is because of your focus on his color.

History has been made, its all very exciting, but the reason he was elected wasn't because of his color.  Not everyone has to be jumping up and down about to pee their pants because of it, many people see the history are very happy they were here to see it, but also acknowledge that to fully give the credit for what this REALLY MEANS, to focus on his color would be on many levels falling right back into the racial issue and color issue.  People want to not see the color and instead see the Man.  Perhaps you are too focus on color its distorting your view of things being said.  I am sure you will take this post as you did another of mine as an indication i don't like the fact we have a black president.  You would be wrong, but you aren't concerned about that.

Hopefully, while his color will go down in history books, i am more concerned if his actions as President will.

angel

Oh and PS:  People were speaking about McCain not making it through the term also, and would probably be also if he was elected.  There actually has been a foiled attempt to harm Obama here in TN - check the news, it was considered very amateur but the fact is, it is news and it gives rise to speculations because of why they wanted to do it.  What do you expect people to do bury their heads in the sand and not acknowledge something because it seems mean to you?  I think the more people hear about it and acknowledge it -- it MAY foil other attempts because people will keep their eyes and ears open instead of acting like its mean so we shouldn't speak about it.  Just a thought.

Yup you can thank who you want, you can make it about race if you want, but then you have to recognise thats what you have done, if it wasnt about race to you then you could simply have thanked his supporters, you didnt you qualified the colour of their skin, yes i dont have to like what you write and i also have every right to point out your own hypocricy whether you choose to see it or not.

How does being emotional solve out tasks at hand?

One has to detach as much emotion as possible.

the right is venomous, then the left gets defensive, this serves NO PUBLIC GOOD.

it distracts all from the real issues.

if someone cares about the country- then seek out ways to improve it,  and for heavens sake, turn off the fricken tv.

If emotion were detached from politics, the poor would starve in the streets as the wealthy rode by.

I guess I am a bit more evolved in that things that are discussed in online forums just don't affect me enough to block people.

Careful now, Evi.  That could be taken as a racist remark...

Getting back to the OP, I have to ask, Mia, if the youth vote hadn't showed, and McC/P had won, would the the really horrific attack posts we'd be seeing on them be automatic attacks on women and the elderly?

Isn't an expectation that he be treated differently because he will be our first President of that particular pigmentation, racist in itself?

I've read a number of posts here with passion, even anger. I don't recall reading any racist, or thinly veiled racist attack, posts.

Am I reading the wrong ones?

Well, if the rat were alive she'd likely run screaming into the next room.  With a dead rat she's more likely to just go "ewwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!"

It seems that the majority of posters are disagreeing with you over this, why are you unable to even consider that perhaps it is your view that is skewed?
Instead of taking a second look as urged by many posters you simply "I will ignore whatever I like" and turn your back to alternative views.

MzMia, I voted for Obama because I thought he was the best man for the job. I will admit he was not my first choice way back before the DNC chose him.

In all honesty, living in a nation with the history the US has, I think it is unrealistic to imagine that people can cheer about him being the first black president.....acknowledging his DNA as being in any way important......yet think that there will be no one with a negative that also acknowledges that same.

While I understand that if a person is black and a citizen of the US, it is a happy happy feel good, moment in history. But, in my eyes, when it becomes a total NONE issue, that will be the real landmark. It just will not be recognised simply by the very nature of it being.

To make it an issue at all, either pro or con, has an aroma of racism whether it be sweet or foul.

The following is a concern troll post (read at your own risk):

MzMia does not need defending, but I'm going to step in. This, post was started because this is the way she feels, just as everyone else has commented on various things around this forum and expressed their opinions and frustrations.

What I find most interesting is that, you immediately come in to hand swat and chastise, instead of trying to have a real dialogue with her about it. This is not just about CM, it's the prevalent attitude that some in our society have no right to voice their concerns, if others don't believe there's a concern to be addressed.

I'm not trying to be the race police on CM, I never came here for that. I never introduced myself as The Black Observer. However, give myself and MzMia the freedom, as you have, to take in and express the pride not only for our country but the evolution of our forefather's struggle in this country - with the ascension of President elect Obama. With the history and even current state of America, why would anyone deny that to their fellow citizens?

Racism still exists, yes, but instead of being veiled in white pointy hoods, it's locked away behind the doors of corporate America and used to divide and conquer the masses. Keep the masses ignorant in the living room, while they sneak all the valuables out the backdoor.

If you are not making the racist comments she was alluding to, then why do you care if she feels the way she feels? She never specifically called anyone out in her original post. I find there is a lot of insecurity in the fact that some of you keep coming back to this thread to swat MzMia on the hand. It's a very paternalistic attitude ... now what does that remind me of?

Hmm.

I said before the election that, now would be the perfect time to work congruently through our issues with race in an open fashion, along side our economic, educational, energy and safety plans for the future. When will that talk be had, this is CollarMe, but we got to start somewhere. All it takes is one person to get the ball rolling. However us sniping back and forth about this is going nowhere.

The thing that I thnk pushes peoples buttons or mine anyways is the holier than thou attitude. I dont disagree that there are and will be racisit views in regards to this election. The problem is that it seemst to be missed that the racisim actually does come from both sides. If a person is going to take a firm stance on something thats fantastic but they have to be sure they arent guilty of the same thing.

but you say that we should try to have a discussion about it, I tried, i didnt come on this page to hand swat I came to say that i found it sad that it happens both ways, and that people ignore the other way and there was no ability to have a real dialogue it was simply pointed out that i didnt have to red the thread.

As you said we can place our opinions all over this forum, there isnt a subject that anyone can post that wont have opposing points of view, and none really should be not allowed to put that point of view down. If people dont agree thats fine, they can say so. The fact that this post is controversial means that people will dissagree. I actually dont see any hand swiping for hand swiping sakes. Just people disagreeing with her or stating their opinion.

Exactly how does one have "dialogue" on a generalized, non-specific, and highly patronizing accusation?

Is every disagreement regarding the merits of the victor (or copious lack thereof) in this recent election automatically tinged with the specter of race?

If this is so, how does the electoral outcome herald a "new day" on race relations? (or anything else, for that matter)
