I lost my faith in him really changing how things are done in Washington when he broke his pledge about the funding

I didn't lose my faith in him because I understood the practicality of the decision, but it did bother me and still does.

Even so, you have to compare one broken pledge with the many reversals of position McCain had during his campaign.

We can only wait and see if Obama's was an isolated incident or the beginning of a trend.

Aye, I wasn't too happy on some of McCain's actions either to be fair. He was really pushing my vote towards the end.

Forgive my over the top topic title, but the recent South Park episode really did a number on me and I have this vision of Randy Marsh running around with his shirt off yelling about "CHANGE!" that I can't get rid of.

So I have heard a lot about CHANGE! in the last year and how things are going to CHANGE!

Being the skeptic that I am, I tend to put up a strong guard when I hear a politician talk about CHANGE! especially when that CHANGE! is constantly referenced without much quantification as to what that CHANGE! will be.

So for everyone out there who voted or didn't vote because of CHANGE!, what do you think will be CHANGED! during a Barrack Obama presidency, good or bad?

You're espousing (rather profusely) about an episode of South Park.

A cartoon.

Emphasizing that it's going to have some impact on your life...or on mine.

A cartoon.

(Did I miss something here?).

Sorry....did I miss something here?

Yeah, the last year of the promise of change being a central theme in the election.

Will he do unspeakable things with cigars like Clinton?

Will he go through impeachment proceedings like Clinton?

I don't think they were unspeakable.

If the Republican witch hunters had not spoke them (over, and over, and over) we wouldn't know about them, and there would have been no impeachment proceedings just because he liked flavored cigars.

Some dip their cigars in brandy and some dip their cigars in ......................

LadyHibiscus -> RE: CHANGE! THE CHANGE IS COMING! (11/10/2008 7:06:17 PM)

I find South Park to be a vital document chronicling the zeitgeist as only cheap animation and vulgar humour can.  That ep with the costumed guinea pigs?  The second that thing hits itunes, it is MINE.

...yup, you missed something. All artforms, especially popular ones, can influence opinion and, indirectly, reshape political landscapes. If you want an example google the SDP in the UK and how Spitting Image destroyed them.......[:D]

MadRabbit -> RE: CHANGE! THE CHANGE IS COMING! (11/10/2008 7:10:54 PM)

I thought the episode did a great job of summarizing the atmosphere of the last year, but this isn't about South Park as so many smart posters have figured out when answering.

No I saw it and thanks for replying in a constructive way.

That comment was directed towards Lookie.

(I saw Sanity in the cartoon. He was the third guy to the left in the Ark)

Hoping the view from the oval office combined with better advice as to the Constitutionallity of both issues will lead to a change of mind on these and many other issues.

Not just a cartoon.

The greatest cartoon in the history of all mankind.

It will change your life.

The episode he's talking about is on right now on Comedy Central.  Channel 107 if you have DISH.

DavanKael -> RE: CHANGE! THE CHANGE IS COMING! (11/10/2008 7:21:03 PM)

Change:
**I feel more hopeful given the election of Obama; I didn't vote for Bush either time and I think they're oging to have to drag that little maniac out of the White House kickingand screaming
**I hope for greater intellectualism in the Oval Office
**I hope for improvements in dimplomacy
**I hope for a more worldly focus while maintaining our status as the only worldpower
**I hope for no more terrorist attacks and for swift decimation of anyone who dares attack us
**I hope that science and not religion dictates more public policy and law
**I hope that a pragmatic plan for correcting the over-extension of the military is created and carried out
**I hope that the economy improves, particularly for the middle and lower classes
Those are a few of my hopes for change during the upcoming Obama presidency.

While I hate to point out what I feel should be obvious (ok, so I don't).........

Isn't PE Obama the one that taught..... uh... let me think here... oh yeah... Constitutional Law?  I know he taught Law of Some form.  Now, that being the case, and his voting record (being public record, and there for all of us to see) being what it is...... WTF difference is sitting in the oval office going to make to change his Perspective?  He Is A Lawyer.  He Knew Up Front When He Voted For It That It Was A Blatant Violation Of The Constitution Just Like Every Other Member Of Congress Did.  If he did NOT know that, then he's not much of a lawyer, even less of a politician, and it certainly doesn't speak well for his potential as president any more than it did for any OTHER current politician's potential.  If he's the great and wonderful guy that some of yall espouce him as, he had his chance to take a stand on That issue when it was first presented to congress - and he failed miserably, just like everyone else who was there.

Are you sure that's his stance?  You might want to check his actual voting record in regards to it.

Here's his voting record, per ontheissues.org:

Voted NO on removing need for FISA warrant for wiretapping abroad.
Voted YES on preserving habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees
Voted YES on requiring CIA reports on detainees & interrogation methods
Voted YES on reauthorizing the PATRIOT Act
Voted NO on extending the PATRIOT Act's wiretap provision
Voted YES on restricting business with entities linked to terrorism
Voted YES on restoring $565M for states' and ports' first responders

http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Homeland_Security.htm

And from Obama's website:
Obama Joined A Filibuster To Block Bush's Version Of The Patriot Act [Vote #358, H.R. 3199, Motion rejected 52-47: R 50-5; D 2-41 (ND 2-37, SD 0-4); 12/16/05]

...the change i'd like to see is, predictably, in foreign policy. The previous administration seemed to totally fail to understand how the rest of the world worked.....and not just tricky places like the Middle East, but also Europe. The USA needs its allies......in this global economy all countries need allies. i'm hoping that PE Obama will remember that allies are friends, not enemies you haven't bombed yet.

From a historical point of view, because of how allies shift they are just enemies we are not bombing today.[:D]
And if all goes well we never will.
