ORIGINAL: MadRabbit My history of the last year might be funny, but the percentage of focus on his middle name was in the single digits. Half the Republican message was questions regarding his past and former associations which were all valid questions. It must be easy to reduce the McCain campaigns arguments and positions down to "bullshit" when you don't know what they are. Well to give the devil it's due there was an awful lot of long drawn out uses of his middle name at rallys and such.To John McCains credit I don't believe it was done by anyone actually associated with his campaign, though they never did step up and stop it either.Obama pretty much ignored the controversy completely, not too much you can complain about when people are simply using the name that appears on your birth certificate. The sherrif in Florida was the most memorable instance, though the best line dealing with the middle name was actually Obama's himself at The Al Smith Dinner....when he said it was given to him by someone who never thought he would run for President. I don't think the people who scream the loudest at rallies represents the viewpoints or the attitude of the majority. Even so, it wasn't a part of McCain's campaign and for Owner59 to claim otherwise shows how he is trying to make something out of nothing. I find the idea of patting ourselves on the back and saying "Wow! Look at what we did! We didn't stop voting because of his middle name!" to be dropping the bar for the American people to the level of being just generally insulting. I'll recognize the historical symbolism of a black man in President, but even then, I am not going to join in on the back patting about "overcoming racial barriers", because it's like congratulating a man for paying his child support and not going to jail. You SHOULD pay your child support and SHOULD not go to jail. You SHOULD vote for a man because he is the best man for the job and not because he is white or black. These things should be normal expectations of behavior and not worthy of a high-five.
