After actually bothering to read some of the profiles flashing by on banners the past few days, I am moved to share this thought....

Anyone claiming to be one should at least know how to SPELL THE WORD !!

The word to describe a top or the non-submissive is

D - O - M - I - N - A - N T

DomiNATE is a verb ~ as in "to dominate"

DomiNANT is an adjective~ as in "She/He is a dominant"

My apologies to the erudite. I was pushed over the edge by the functionally illiterate...

Oh, I would say, sans the gratuitous 'illiterate' crack (I know some people with high I.Q.'s, who wouldn't win a spelling bee, so the watermark for intelligence isn't exactly, being a good speller) - but aside from that, I would say that since this post mentions no names, it could be a favour to those who don't realize they're misspelling it.

While we're at it, - dear new friends, only your friends will tell you, that, just as "femme" is pronounced 'fem,' "domme" is pronounced, 'dom,' not 'dom-may.'

What I do find funny, secretly pointing and laughing, is when I occasionally come across the dom-liest of dom-ly profiles, most Patronizing of Patrons, most Towering of Egos, and the reason I'm viewing their profile is because they accidentally made it, "Submissive."

Ahh yes, people make fun of the post if you want but I too get irritated at this little mistake. How am I to trust someone to tie me up and do naughty and potentially dangerous things to me if they can't tell the difference between who they are and what they do? No one has to be perfect and I certainly don't claim to be but seriously....

Actually, if you want to be really correct, and adjective would be a descriptor as in She/He is dominant.
Dominant is also a noun, in this use, in which case someone can be A Dominant.

Sorry, I'll get back off my soap box now. If you are going to complain about someone else doing it wrong, you really should make sure you do it right.

Hello flutter. Take a deep breath, sign off, take a hot bath, whatever it takes. If you let something so trivial as someone's spelling get to you, then the really annoying real life stuff is going to send you into orbit.

Some people are not as skilled at writing than some others... I have seen lots of "funny" spellings through many forums that I found myself getting used to it although I admit that at first it did irritated me. Until I found that one of those I knew who was spelling awkwardly was dyslexic. There are some other rare species, like me, for whom english isn't their first language =D I try, I know I write decent english, but I had to learn like everybody and I still make mistakes every now and then :) So unless I read some AOL chat speak in posts I don't make a big fuss out of it :)

...which brings to mind the most obvious point, that in the English language dictionary, neither "dominant" or "submissive" are nouns, at all. There is no such thing as "a dominant," or "a submissive."

As DiurnalVampire has pointed out, they are both adjectives.

So, we're all misusing them.

Being able to win a spelling bee is not the be-all, end-all to being a good dominate/dominant/Dominant/whatthehellever. Being a walking dictionary with factory-loaded spell-check is not going to make someone proficient in shibari, know what I may need as far as after-care, know a thing or two about wax play. Daddy is an incredibly bad speller, doesn't make him a bad Daddy in the least. The x was a bad speller too, but it's not reason #98 why he is the x.

Just my opinion, anyways....

my spelling sux....... it really does. spelling a word properly no more makes you a dominant personality then the token black leather vest/or stilletto boots do, or having master/mistress in your user name.
