I'm Jewish both by heritage and by active religion.

Being kinky and being Jewish are two facets of me but I keep them apart.  At my previous synagogue, there were two women who knew I was a kinkster (one I met on alt), and one suspected, but I didn't advertise it.

That bit about converts not being welcomed - that was true in some temples decades ago, but you'd have a hard time now finding one that doesn't welcome converts today.

Steven....
Why do i feel like someone's been reading our cmail??? LOL

O, Christ onna a cracker.  Are you old enough to remember when the Mass was said in Latin?  I'm sitting in Religious Instruction one day and the nuns starts going on about how all females are an 'occassion of sin'.  We're not just responsible for our own ethical conduct, but we have to avoid inspiring lust in any males.  (Mind you, at the time, I didn't know where babies came from, LOL.)

My sense is that Judaism is not as mysoginsitic and f**ked up as Catholicism is, but I suppose I'll have to wait and see.

There are D/s web sites for kinky Jews?  I have looked -- my Google-Fu must be failing me, LOL.  Can anyone tell me what the URL may be?

Peace out.

Um.. I guess you have never seen the way Orthodox women dress. No skin showing.  Married women must cover their hair, many do so with sheitels (wigs).  Some simply shave their heads and wear scarves. This is so as not to inspire lust in any men.

Why don't you simply walk into a synagogue on a Friday night or Saturday morning and attend Shabbat services.  Or on a Saturday evening for Havdalah.  Or if you want to learn about Judaism start taking classes.  Look to see if there is a Florence Melton program in your area and attend a few classes.

I'm done with this thread now.  Reading the OP's posts is frustrating me.

WhiplashSmile2 -> RE: Kinky Jews (11/13/2008 4:57:16 PM)

One's religion is just another aspect to be blending into day to day living as much as BDSM or D/s can be.    It's what you personally manage to blend together and incorperate into your own life.

When entering into a place of worship or you are amoung other people of your own faith, best to keep to simple and to the matter regarding your own faith.  This is what is in common between all the people involved.  Not D/s or BDSM.  Not everybody will be accepting and understanding of your relationship choices, sexual practices or kinky habits.

Everything has it's appropriate place and time. There's a difference between a Synagogue and a BDSM munch.  Not everybody at a BDSM munch goes to the Synagogue and holds to your same religious beliefs, not everybody that goes to a synagogue into into BDSM or D/s.

I think you will be suprised regarding how Judaism and D/s dynamics can work together.  It's the kink aspects that might cause some issues.  (just my own personal thoughts on the matter).

oceanwynds -> RE: Kinky Jews (11/13/2008 5:07:09 PM)

I was born into the Jewish religion. Jews say once a Jew always a Jew, though I might debate that. The western religions hold a lot for people, and if they want to explore it so be it. Being Jewish is tough at times, but tell me what isn't. I trying to think why Kink , BDSM and D/s would even be a question here to study this religion, but my mind can't wrap around it. Perhaps, it isn't for me to understand either, so I do not judge the OP on this.

Spirituality is a personal thing, and for me learning to open up to my submissive nature has more to do with serving the Goddess then anything. I am sure that might be hard for others to wrap their minds around it, but it is who I am. How can I find fault in another's view of things.

My understanding (from reading the writings of Orthodox feminists) is that it's not to avoid inspiring lust, it's to avoid inspiring lust in anyone other than their husband and that shaved heads are a rare extreme - though it may be splitting hairs and I could be wrong.

At any rate, your suggestion that the OP attend services is a great one. She may find that the Hebrew confuses her and she doesn't like the idea of praying in a language she doesn't understand. Even the Reform temple I attended used some Hebrew.

persephonee -> RE: Kinky Jews (11/13/2008 5:52:41 PM)

stef wanted to know if you had ever considered converting on 11/12....at 129 pm. Is that why you posted this now?

doormatNEEDED -> RE: Kinky Jews (11/13/2008 5:55:36 PM)

I have not read the pages of responses however let me throw my 2cents in as an extremely sadistic and kinky Jew. One thing you need to remember (and at times remind people of) is that once you convert to Judaism you are considered to have always been Jewish. We are forbidden by the Torah from condemning or treating differently someone who has just recently become Jewish... now that being the case it may depend on the Synagogue that you choose to attend how well that is actually followed. I have been a member of several synagogues over the years and surprisingly enough the Chabad's (super religious for the non-Jews in the room) are much more accepting of converts than the Reformed and Conservatives tend to fall someplace in the middle. My mother would probably be a great source of info on this subject seeing as she converted when she married my father, however she is not kinky (as far as I care to know) so you won't find her perusing this site. I have had one sub start the conversion process in the past as well so if you would like to chat offline I would be happy to help you out in any way I can.

Ok, I will admit, I have a headache and I will just say it.....

Some people just run out of places to belong

so the next logical step it to seek another, and yet another roof to protect them.

They eventually have to face themselves and notice that the very roof they seek is their sanity and sanctity within their own skull and of the like of the average mankind.

*giggles* Now I'm picturing cowboys with Star of David buckles and kippahs instead of big hats, and spurs in the shul. My rabbi has a little plaque that I love (and want so bad!) that says "Shalom ya'all".

My sense is that Judaism is not as mysoginsitic

It's really dependent on the sect and the community you join. I can honestly say that I haven't ever experienced a truly *mysoginistic* environment at any synagogues I've been to... but I HAVE seen a disdain for women at some (and I've been to quite a few in the cleveland area).

i dunno. i was at a very highly orthodox(lubuvitch) temple for a bar mitvah. the woman are on one side and the men on another, with a curtain in between. So the women are just all yacking and not participating. Its ok. orthodox women are not required to pray. They are considered closer to God with child rearing and all. But afterward when the bar mitvah oneg/luncheon occured the men were ushered into a large section with tables and chairs. A very large room and the women were all crowded into a much smaller room with no tables and chairs. Like cattle. Some old man did come in and say a blessing and put a shot of schlibovitz down. Everyone looked and gasped when i picked up that shot and downed it in one gulp.

Cheese and Rice!  You converts remind me of naturalized American citizens!  You wind up knowing more about the religion/country than those born into it.  What's up with that?? (Good for you.. and you are right of course.  I wrote quickly and didn't read it over before posting it.)

That made me giggle in my chair but thank you. Hopefully I can convince the Rabbis that I know my stuff when it's my turn to appear before them. [:)]
