I have been away from the boards for awhile due to business travel and as I normally attempt to keep up with the mix of new folks coming on to the CM path I causually review the profiles of newcomes. Upon doing so I read a profile of a lady that presented a thome on being a "slut" from many angles.
Since I use the term in my profile, it brought to mind the chance that over the last few years the meaning has morphed into an new understanding.

Whats your thoughts on the interpretation be ye "D" or "s"?

CP

This is a very loaded word to me.  As a young woman, to be called a 'slut' was to be called a 'a piece of worthless trash'.  In the main, women used the word to insult other women.

I've never cared for it myself.  I dont like the implication that a woman who is free with her sexaulity is degraging herself, while a promiscious man is to be admired.

I suppose if it really mattered to my Dom we'd work it out.  I know the word means different things to folks into D/s.  I don't think I'd ever be comfortable being called a 'slut' by anyone other than my Dom, though.

Some words ( like the 'c' word) are vile insults to women.  I also don't care for insulting a man by calling him a 'pussy'.  To have a pussy is not to be 'less than', merely different.

Some folks have very strong feelings about words. I once told one of my gay friends to 'eat me' after he had told me to 'bite him'.  His reaction seemed over-the-top, but after processing it awhile, I could see why a gay man might find that insulting from any woman.

Language is very nuanced.  Racial slurs, etc., are things we've all grown to accept must be used -- if at all -- only in the presence of folks whom we know will not be offended.

Lawyer jokes and blonde jokes roll off my back.  Being called a 'fish' by a goy man isn't quite as easy to shake off.

difference between a slut and a bitch

Nononono.... They're both sluts, but the bitch is nasty, as well. You meant "bitch in heat" as opposed to "cold bitch". Sheesh

'Bitch' is a nuanced word.  The meaning behind it, whe written or spoken, can be anything from admiration for a woman's personal power, to a joke between friends, to a referene to a very crabby, even aggressive woman.

While only a female can be a 'bitch' and there really is no such word for men, anyone can be 'bitched out'.

So long as the intent isn't hostile, the word is fine with me.

I was active in the bisexual community for more than a decade before I wandered into bdsm.  For many bisexual 'slut' is now considered empowering in the same way that homosexuals have taken 'gay' back from being an insult.  I know the popularity fo the book, "The Ethical Slut" has had a lot to do with bisexual and poly people claiming slut as a positive.

A word has as much power as one allows it to have. Add me to those who agree with LA's post. I see "slut" as an attitude - one of embracing and enjoying one's sexuality with little to no inhibition. Growing up I always heard it or used it as a negative label, until I realized such negativity was fear-based. If someone wants to call me slut as an insult, I am not insulted, because it's only indicative of the other person's fear or bias, and has nothing to do with me.

That said, it's not a label I would randomly refer to people as, namely because it tends to have personal meaning for people, and who am I to say if they're a slut or not? At the same time, I'm not impressed when dominants randomly refer to submissives as such.

it's all in the context for me

i don't see an issue with being a forum slut or someone's slut

on the other hand if J Random stranger (via internet or in real life) without knowing me comes out and calls me a slut, yeah I'm going to assume they mean it as a bad thing cause I, in turn, don't know them.

Others have said it before me.  It's an attitude, a hunger, a longing, a desire and having the partner, the will, and the want-to to unleash all the those things.   It's enjoying and letting go of your own sexuality ... in synch with your partner's.   It's being able to get wrapped up in your partner's sexuality as well.

Slut is a word. While many people view it as derogatory it is not, it is simply someone who enjoys sex. If that can be considered a negative then people will indeed use it that way. I used to see it as a negative. I changed my perspective. Now I am proud to say I am a slut. :D

celticlady,

Damn, life just keeps getting better! a Celt and a slut also! Thanks for your input.

I don't like the term slut. I don't call myself one and it's a negative word in my book. Though in the context of "dirty talk" I don't mind it. I guess in the end it all depends on the context of the word, when it's use and of course by whom.

I guess that goes the same for a lot of words though.

Usako,

Tis a good thing to be flexable in ones outlook, but how does it be a turn on in one scene and an insult in another?

Partial repost:
For me, slut has nothing at all to with the ACT of sex, how MANY people you have sex with, what TYPE of sex you have with it, what CRITERIA you use with your partners. Being a slut for me is a personal attitude towards sex and sexuality. It is an attitude that hungers for sexual interactions, is unashamed of those hungers and actively seeks to satiate those hungers.

A woman who only has one partner she only ever kisses her whole life can be just as much a slut as I am.

This also helped me in that I realize so many people (women especially) find it hard to be “a slut.” They can embrace being “someone’s slut” or being a loved slut, but find it difficult to be bald-facedly an open slut. So by keeping things to a personal attitude level, it doesn’t matter HOW the person acts as a slut…simply that they embrace their slut attitude.

In short:
slut- someone who has an active interest in sex, sexuality and celebrates it openly (does not imply any ACTUAL sex, or any AMOUNT of sex)

whore- someone who receives money in exchange for sexual services

bitch- female who has aggravating, negative and superior attitude

The word "slut" to me means someone who enjoys sex and does it a lot. I do not attach any gender to the word as I know plenty of male sluts, although I do know most people attach this word to a female person. I see nothing wrong with being a slut as long as you are safe, happy and careful in what it is that you do.

Slut..one who is promiscuous and free with their sexuality..ie..they'll sleep with anyone. That has always been my understanding throughout my lifetime.

MY/HIS slut...one who is promiscuous with HIM and free with her sexuality with Him, for Him.

Well setting Websters aside, how do you feel you fit the term?

I love dirty talk...for some reason it really gets me going.  So the word "slut" is one of my favorites.  I am my Lady's "slut" and it turns me on for her to make me say so...

I am also a forum slut...though thankfully for you all, it does not turn me on in the same way.

Otter,

Hopefully that view will continue on in history.

The word slut is usually used to keep a woman's sexuality in check. Only recently have men been called 'sluts' as well (i'm talking about mainstream vernacular), but the implications and derogatory meaning are not the same. It's used in dirty talk because it still connotes a taboo... the taboo of promiscuity and openness. I don't use it and cringe when people use it during play/sex, thinking it'll turn me on or make me feel 'like a bad girl.'

The only time I will use 'slut' is in humor, with a modifier before it. (moto-slut, shoe slut, purse slut, etc... meant in the way of 'major lover of X')

SND,

I promise I will never call you a slut! that being said, why does the word get associated with "dirty" talk?
