ORIGINAL: Lordandmaster In the United States, on the other hand, "How's the crack?" is not a recommended opening line. While I wouldn't recommend asking in Ireland for a ride if you want a lift, well I guess it depends who you are asking ;) I didn't understand when somebody asked me for one and told the guy "No, I'm here by bike", I wasn't trying to be snarky but everybody attributed me with a greater command of the language than I had then. You just made me spill coffee all over my keyboard, hilarious. Oh to see his face, when you said you had come by bike. lmao. The odd thing is, I'm aware of the "ride" thing but even now (12 or 15 years later), I still can't figure out what double meaning bike has or "I'm here by bike" I get most of the plays with words quicker than native speakers and as a non-native speaker, the "dirty meaning" of something is more obvious (actually not always, should have seen my colleagues in NYC when I "Popped out to have a quick fag" until it dawned on me) but the bike thing still puzzles me, the only thing I can think off is that sometimes a slag is called a bike?
