You can have people without a god but you can't have a god without people.

I totally agree, Fangs. Probably not a popular viewpoint in this country, nowadays, though. It used to be easier to talk about the "Did God Create Man or Did Man Create God" question in years gone by. Questioning faith raises more hackles now.

I'm with windchymes, but make mine a cat. Make that two...to go.

I argued with my 9th grade biology teacher about the existence of god. He was a very religious man and his position to me was "There can be no spontaneous generation of life, therefore god must exist" I asked him "Is god alive"? He said , "Yes, of course". My obvious counterpoint was, "Then who created god"?

If you believe in god then all things are possible (least that's what "they" tell me).

i subscribe to George Carlin's view of god

"an invisible man, living up in the sky and he has 10 rules that he wants us to follow, if we don't we go to a place where we spend eternity of pain, suffering and agony. but he loves us...he loves us and he needs money. he's all knowing, all powerful and all caring...just can't handle money"

If you believe in god and all things are possible, does that mean it's possible for there not to be a god?

An insanely old argument that I thought of when I was 11 and thought I was the world's hottest thang...until I learned that dudes thousands of years ago had asked the exact same question.

Carlin is a riot.

And I think that man invented the gods... the 'god'... but that's just my take on things.

If you look at "god's" attitudes and demands and compare them with those one would expect from an Iron Age king, that hypothesis takes on considerable strength.

After all, why would someone powerful enough to create the universe really worry that he wasn't being honoured properly... and go to the trouble to punish those who fail to do it with proper enthusiam?

I think David Voltaire may have been half right when he said, "God created man in His own image; and man has been returning the favor."

IMHO, man has the ability to reason, decide, determine--the ability to choose how to live his life (and I use his here as generic humanity)--spirituality lives within all men--for it is there--at that core that a belief exists--a belief that should drive behavior--we use "god" as the big stick when it is within all of us to choose--

here in the US--we have become an arrogant group of people with talk of "god"--we assume all the world is Christian and they are not---Merry Christmas versus Happy Holidays--when the US is such a melting pot of cultures--we still try to force a single concept--we assume because a group believes in Buddha they are misguided--how the hell do we know they don't know better than we do??--or those that seek their spiritual support from gods and goddesses, they will be damned to hell---<smiles>--

we spend so much time pointing our fingers outward to keep from pointing them inward--

if you look inward, the laws that should guide you reside there--it matters not what it is called--it is the timless law of humanity, many follow, many don't and the existence of god or not, have not changed the choices one bit--

IMHO and I will now count to ten, waiting to be flamed or Mod removed, I'm sure--

I am not extremely religious.
I think it's wrong that people need a set of "rules" (commandments) in order to live a good life, be just, and kind to others.

religion is an organized collection of concepts providing a sense of community--having nothing to do with one's sense of spirituality--IMHO, the two are very different--one can have no relationship with a "god" but can be extremely spiritual--

an interesting question v--its like if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears does it make a sound?--we think humanity has existed all the time, but you have a point--if the planet was once indeed animals as science tells us---then a god could exist even with no people---a very good point and a great dinner table topic----

A Jew who lived in Jerusalem during Herod's reign wrote "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation."

Sounds good to me.

Oh, the Jew's name was Hillel.

since ALL gods are ominpotent
and create and destroy at will and whim
if they destroy ALL the people...are they not gods anymore?

are the gods-of-athena and the gods-of-odin less gods if they have no human worshippers?
NO!
a "god" is eternal..immortal!
they are STILL gods!

just because some of us are die-hard atheists.................he he

like me!

Because if god/creator of our existense where to eliminate all of us, then this "supreme" being would have nothing to worship it. To be a god, you must have those to worship you.

Weither the existense of an actual devine creator is real or not is irrelivent. If ppl wish to worship a creator, then the creator is a god. If no one wishes to worship or even belive in the creator/s, then it/they are not gods.
