quote:
ORIGINAL: rulemylife They post profit-loss statements because they're just genuinely nice guys, or does it have something to do with SEC regulations? lie to your stockholders and see how well that works out. and I'm not talking about jail time, I'm talking about someone finding out your dishonest with your money, finding proof, and then all of your investments are flushed out and you're without a job. the SEC is superfluous. quote:
Do I need to list how many companies have collapsed in the last eight years, costing stockholders their entire investment, because they manipulated those numbers despite the regulations? no you don't. do I need to remind you that this is exactly what should and will happen to most companies who engage in these practicies? quote:
They have incentives to make them appear they operate at higher standards but that appearance is also easily manipulated, even with regulatory oversight. Without, it would be a free-for-all. yes...if they are bad at running a business, they will think this is a good idea. if they are good, they will realize that posting correct signals to investors is actually in their best interest. just because your stock is high (investors are willing to put more into your company) does not mean you are successful. it runs the risk of you, the business, being unable to tell how successful you actually are and how much you should expand, and how much of a market there is (see: the collapse of the e-companies). quote:
Who pays then for these independent, third-party inspections? How will they be financed? By the restaurants that are part of the restaurant association? No, that wouldn't work, would it? it would be paid for by the restaurants, obviously. just like pest control and repairs are paid for by the restaurant. they can either pay for this service (as they do any other service they receive from someone else like water, power, wireless internet, and so on) or not pay for it. if they pay for it, it may make them more money as people are more comfortable eating at a clean restaurant. and yes, that would work, wouldn't it? quote:
Maybe by donations from the customers. We could add a little to every restaurant bill, pool the money and set up an independent organization to grade them on their safety and cleanliness. Think that might work? Wonder why no one has thought of that before! don't confuse a donation with a tax. would you 'donate' 42 cents per gallon of gas to pay the gas tax? would you 'donate' 8% of every item you purchase to pay the sales tax? would you 'donate' a chunk of your income to pay an income tax? I wouldn't. people don't take donations, they ask for them. people take taxes. and why should I be forced to pay to fund certain restaurants sanitation if I'm never going to use that restaurant? wouldn't it make more sense for me to only support restaurants I go to? quote:
I hate to be repetitive, but I don't think I can explain it anymore succinctly and clearly than to say what I've said before. We form governments to pool our resources to accomplish what we as individuals do not have the time, resources, or ability to do alone. do 'we' form governments? I was never asked to form a government. were you? quote:
Myself, I kind of like knowing I can take a drink of tap water and be sure it won't land me in the hospital. yes. having a government means your water will be clean! http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/85427.php I love the fact that canada was trying to squash out bottled water (for whatever reason...I'll let you decide why) and it turns out that they can't even get unleaded water into their schools. so what are they doing? providing the children with water from the market. quote:
Or go to any restaurant and be confident I won't end up with food poisoning. And board any airline knowing the mechanics keeping that airplane flying are certified by the FAA and didn't get hired straight from doing oil changes at the Jiffy Lube. don't go to crappy restaurants? read reviews?
