Or fill the plane up with those balls that kids are thrown into a pit of at Burger King. A great way to make new friends too.

that could be fun :)

Hilarious! Ummmphfffffff....s'cuse me....boing boing boing....

LOL You nut!

Well this thread came to mind today. I had an accident (more like a fall down some stairs) this morning and now I'm in a wheelchair (I wiped out both ankles). And guess what? My apartment complex is not wheelchair accessible. I had to slide out of the wheelchair and crawl up the steps to get into my apartment today. I'm going to be in a wheelchair for awhile...stuck at home.

It's amazing how much we take our feet for granted! But I'll tell ya this - When I'm ready to go back to work, I'll sure be glad for the wheelchair accessible ramp to get into my building, and for the wheelchair accessible bathroom, and for the handicap parking spots close to the door.

Yeah that is usually the way to run a successful business. Coach is not really meant to be comfortable, never has and never will be. Just spent $74.50 US total to get a friend from Atlanta to Kansas City flying coach. That is pretty fucking amazing to me, that for such an amount a 13 hour drive can be turned into a 2 hour flight. That saves 11 hours of my life, which comes out to about $7 an hour.

edit: Wanted to add that I would spend that much in gas driving there in my car.

the airline industry has for years looked for cheaper and cheaper ways to make money while adding more and more passengers.

So the way to run a successful business is to try to increase profit by inconveniencing your customers as much as possible?

A wonderful business model that explains why the airline industry and much of the economy is in the situation it is.

How about removing the seats from planes altogether? Let passengers bring their own seats, be it a kitchen stool, table chair, armchair or even a bed settee. There could be an additional fee for removing castors from armchairs (we wouldn't want to be squashed by armchairs rolling around during take off and turbulence, would we?). That way everybody would have the seat they want.

Well that might cut out the whining, especially if you throw in the balls, but there will be others who will still find a reason to bitch. As far as I am concerned when I buy a ticket to fly somewhere, I am not buying the seat. I am paying them to move my ass from Detroit to Orlando. That's it. I really don't care how much fabric the guy in the next isle is sitting on, he also is paying for a trip from point a to point b. When the plain lands he will not have gotten anything extra from the trip. He will be in Orlando and so will I. And that's all I will really care about.

Thank you kitten (and GT and Stella!). Mom is here with me, last night and tonight, then a friend will stay with me Wed & Thurs. I'll figure out the rest after that. I can't imagine having no help. The Vicadin isn't helping the pain much (I took 2) so I need help just going from lying down to sitting up and back. Amazing how much you use your feet just to kick the covers off! Who'd a thunk it?! good that you have help!  i broke the left kneecap and the right wrist at the same time....put me on crutches, tell me NOT to use the wrist or put weight on the leg.  WTF????  took me a week to figure out how to use the handheld shower and clean myself, before that i was using a washcloth and forget trying to get the hair clean.  sometimes my family REALLY sucked.  oh, and i was sole caregiver for someone *else* at the time.

but i'm a masochist, right?  [:D]

take care, dear lady!!  oh and those vicodin work better if you arent trying to do to much.  like....move on your own.  [;)]

It's funny the instructions you get sometimes. They wouldn't let me out of the hospital yesterday until I could show an ability to get from the bed to the walker to the wheelchair and back. I couldn't do it until they said the next step was throwing me in convalescent care. Suddenly I thought back on all the difficult stuff my former owner would have me endure for him and realized if I could do that, I could do this. With the help of a PT and about a half hour later, I made it, and fell back in bed in a new kind of agony! But they let me out as a result.

As for moving on my own - well, I can't! Everything is an arm's distance from the couch - laptop, water, tv remote, commode, phone...I'm all set and I'm not moving!!

But damn if this situation didn't have me thinking about handicap accessible stuff, and how we don't always realize the importance of it until we need it. I have tickets to the theater in San Francisco this Saturday (doubt I'll be going now) and started wondering what their accessibility is. They were expensive tickets, too, so they best should have easy access available!

I am extremely fortunate at how many are offering help. Makes me realize how good life is, ya know? They won't let me be stubborn and stick it out alone - in this case, I couldn't anyway.

pixidustpet -> RE: Obese has right to 2 airline seats- (11/25/2008 8:25:57 AM)

call ahead to the theater, you *may* be able to change to handicapped seating.  if so, a lot of places have "attendant seating" for free.  (i have a friend, she's a paraplegic.  she told me this kinda thing.  crazy woman is also a racecar driver.  no lie!)

good that you're all set up.  that makes life MUCH easier...oh and after i had my knee surgery?  i faked the night nurse into letting me up on crutches to visit the little girl's room  bedpans suck.  [:D]

just as wrong as it would be for a college who accepts government money to run that college to tell the public they have no right to access, regardless if they meet the standards for admission, its also wrong for any firm who takes government funds to aid in its running to say they will not provide a service to all the citizens who pay for it.

again, what if it is government regulations that is responsible for a certain industry to not be able to be profitable? you're in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

but I'm curious, you think it is "right" for airlines to be obligated to "provide a service to all the citizens who pay for it". so if I've ever paid a tax that has gone into a general fund (or if I've ever had to pay a tax that has supported the monetary system), I have a 'right' to use an airline's service? what if I can't pay, should I still be able to use it? what other industries does this apply to? can I go to any school that accepts federal money even if I can't pay? am I entitled to garages upon garages of cars as they've been bailedout in the past?

this is a pinfully whimsical argument.

why is this a bad thing?

They post profit-loss statements because they're just genuinely nice guys, or does it have something to do with SEC regulations?

lie to your stockholders and see how well that works out. and I'm not talking about jail time, I'm talking about someone finding out your dishonest with your money, finding proof, and then all of your investments are flushed out and you're without a job. the SEC is superfluous.

quote:

Do I need to list how many companies have collapsed in the last eight years, costing stockholders their entire investment, because they manipulated those numbers despite the regulations?

no you don't. do I need to remind you that this is exactly what should and will happen to most companies who engage in these practicies?

quote:

They have incentives to make them appear they operate at higher standards but that appearance is also easily manipulated, even with regulatory oversight.  Without, it would be a free-for-all.

yes...if they are bad at running a business, they will think this is a good idea. if they are good, they will realize that posting correct signals to investors is actually in their best interest. just because your stock is high (investors are willing to put more into your company) does not mean you are successful. it runs the risk of you, the business, being unable to tell how successful you actually are and how much you should expand, and how much of a market there is (see: the collapse of the e-companies).

quote:

Who pays then for these independent, third-party inspections?

How will they be financed?  By the restaurants that are part of the restaurant association?  No, that wouldn't work, would it?

it would be paid for by the restaurants, obviously. just like pest control and repairs are paid for by the restaurant. they can either pay for this service (as they do any other service they receive from someone else like water, power, wireless internet, and so on) or not pay for it. if they pay for it, it may make them more money as people are more comfortable eating at a clean restaurant.

and yes, that would work, wouldn't it?

quote:

Maybe by donations from the customers.  We could add a little to every restaurant bill, pool the money and set up an independent organization to grade them on their safety and cleanliness.  Think that might work?

Wonder why no one has thought of that before!

don't confuse a donation with a tax. would you 'donate' 42 cents per gallon of gas to pay the gas tax? would you 'donate' 8% of every item you purchase to pay the sales tax? would you 'donate' a chunk of your income to pay an income tax? I wouldn't. people don't take donations, they ask for them. people take taxes.

and why should I be forced to pay to fund certain restaurants sanitation if I'm never going to use that restaurant? wouldn't it make more sense for me to only support restaurants I go to?

quote:

I hate to be repetitive, but I don't think I can explain it anymore succinctly and clearly than to say what I've said before.

We form governments to pool our resources to accomplish what we as individuals do not have the time, resources, or ability to do alone.

do 'we' form governments? I was never asked to form a government. were you?

quote:

Myself, I kind of like knowing I can take a drink of tap water and be sure it won't land me in the hospital.

yes. having a government means your water will be clean!

I love the fact that canada was trying to squash out bottled water (for whatever reason...I'll let you decide why) and it turns out that they can't even get unleaded water into their schools. so what are they doing? providing the children with water from the market.

quote:

Or go to any restaurant and be confident I won't end up with food poisoning.  And board any airline knowing the mechanics keeping that airplane flying are certified by the FAA and didn't get hired straight from doing oil changes at the Jiffy Lube.

don't go to crappy restaurants? read reviews?

no, that's not what explains why the airline (or auto) industry is in as much of a problem as it is.

the question isn't about inconveniencing your customers. the question is about providing a service that stands to make you as much of a profit as it can but still be more attractive a good to the consumer than, say, 500 dollars they have in their bank.

Glad you have rotating nurses at least.  Better at home than the food in the hospital you know.

a) You aren't getting the same service as everyone else if you are using more than everyone else. b) Discrimination would be to simply not allow larger people on the plane.

Lynnxz,
I think you fail to see the basic, FREE MARKET aspect of this.
It is not a matter of other consumers having your permission to feel the way they do about a service provider, or you approving of the way they use the words to describe their descions.

If I don't like what a buisness does, then I don't have to use them. For instance, I refuse to shop in any store that does not have public restrooms. Yes, you can tell me that it is not about me, it's all those other bad people who make a mess, it's a bad neihborhood, yaddayadda. but, the first time i relize there is no public resteroom - even if you nicely let me use the employee only one just this time - I won't be back.

If enough people feel like I do, the store will go out of buisness.

So, that is SO unfair. I shouldn't be allowed to wield that kind of power, and do it without any limitations at all - if I don't like something, just, BAM, I don't have to spend my money there, even if my reason is stupid and unfair.

Welcome to the free market.

Dark42662 -> RE: Obese has right to 2 airline seats- (11/30/2008 8:29:23 AM)

The easiest way to deal with this is have the airlines charge by the pound - luggage and passengers.  A passenger pays a flat rate which would be adjusted by weighing you when you get to the airport.   People who weigh less than average (such as a child with a car seat) would get a rebate on their charge.   People who weigh more or have more luggage would pay more.

Yeah because that will change how many seats people take up? I'm all good with one seat, but if someone were my weight and like, 5'0, they might not be.

MistresseLotus -> RE: Obese has right to 2 airline seats- (11/30/2008 9:41:44 AM)

The price of a ticket is for one seat.  If you need two.. then you should expect to pay for them, otherwise you are asking the airline to take the hit for your obesity.  It's not bias, it's business.
