I have been watching this interesting film on civil linerties, I am maybe 1 hour into it.
http://www.filmsforaction.org/film/?Film=340&Title=Taking_Liberties

I was surprised the police can hold people for 28 days in England.

With our very "focused" collective attention span, real ID has fallen out of mind.    Does your state now have real ID, and do you actually carry it with you?

If your state is soon the get real ID, will you carry your old ID?  or NO ID?  or the "real ID"????

Somehow I dont think the states will scrap the real ID.    even tho- Obama is for change'  (coughs)

The biometric ID card is one thing, but it will be scary when people are microchipped like pet owners do to their animals, don't laugh, it may very well come if we do not watch our civil liberties.

Just got to remember, no matter what the owners say about prevention of terrorism and all that, the reality is they want total control of us.

In prevention of terrorism, do they in reality suspect us all as potential terrorists ?

He, this is the first time in 8 years that I have had legal ID of the current sort. Still managed to travel my plane, train and bus even after 9/11.

The reason I didnt have is it was to much trouble to go get it.

It was actually nice to have some a level of not being so trackable.

Sure SSI could find me and my bank. But I also never left forwarding address.

Im going to kind of miss that bit of privacy personally.

Actually, i think here in the states it is illegal for an adult to not have an official ID, either a DL or an ID on them of the state of which they are a resident or a passport or military id some type of official ID.  I believe these laws were in effect long before 911 etc.  They can actually be given i believe its a ticket of you are stopped or asked for same by law enforcement and can produce no official ID.  This however, is not oft times enforced, but i do believe it is law in most if not all of the US States.  I don't know the specifics on it, but i do believe its already a law an adult must carry some form of official ID on them or they can be cited.  Our drivers licenses are by State, so if you drive you technically already have such an ID on you (let's hope).

Oh for the days when we were born in a country and were assumed to have rights without needing to be a card carrying member of a club.

Seriously who thinks anyone should have the right to force me to prove anything about myself if I am going about my business and not hurting anyone in the process? I'm sick of living in a society which shovels a false sense of security down the necks of benign citizens by forcing them to identify themselves. Prevent terrorism or any other isms my arse.

They’ll be demanding insects have paperwork next, livestock already has it due to mad cowism, which is a good thing but that is that and we ain’t mad cows.

They expect us to pay for it too, what are they going to do deport me or maybe arrest me for the reasons of yanking hair out of my head to stick in their DNA database, lazy police work.
Grrrr I say and so should you.

In Germany carrying your ID in for of a "Personalausweis" is mandatory from 16 years on up. Has never been a problem for me. I even remember being proud to get it for the first time.

Well, I am considering putting subcutaneous tracking devices on my UM's prior to them reaching puberty.

Well, it appears, according to this crazy Real ID Act,  I am good until 2017 and since you said (in another thread) that the Rapture is only 6-12 months away, I should not have to worry about this.

If you never want to cash a check, or travel outside the US... not having an ID is no problem. If you know the right kinds of people, not having an ID is easily fixed (as long as you dont want your REAL name)

getting a new id used to be a relatively easy process (or so I'm told). but after 9/11 it became much more difficult. I'm hoping illegal immigrants are given citizenship as that'll open up a few more opportunities for people who want an extra id.

I, of course, am not interested in getting an extra id as I'm sure saying such over the internet is a federal crime of some sort.

I really don't understand why so many Americans are so anti-id. I travel a lot so I've always had it, it's never been an issue. Just don't give people a reason to need to find you. In otherwords, don't do stupid shit that will get you arrested.

can I see your papers?! papers please!

I love this type of argument. if you aren't a criminal, you have nothing to worry about. what a horrible horrible argument to make.

but let's talk about the real id act. in itself, it's not too harmful...except for the fact that the federal government doesn't have the power to do this (but no one cares about the limitations of the federal government - nor have they since the days of king lincoln). what is bothersome is the extentions that can easily be applied to state id's that all have to meet national guidelines. for one, the federal government can augment the current real id's so that they contain more information all for our 'safety and health' - which would fly in the face of privacy. the real id act puts no restrictions on what the id card can be used for in the future. the fear is that this is opening the door for a national id that is required for things other than flying or entering a federal building/nuclear power plant. and let's not kid ourselves, that's what's going to happen.

I've read it multiple times, it's my favorite book. There's a big difference between a piece of id and that book. That's a really silly comparison.

I do not have a problem carrying a liscence for driving a vehicle or a passport for traveling outside the country.  I do however, take issue with being tagged and catalogued like cattle.

Example? I'm still not seeing why this is a big deal. What are you worried about happening?
