Not long ago the words executed and killed would have been unlikely to occur in such an article .

Murdered would have been the term of choice until recent times.

It's not bravado. It's a sober realistic assessment of the threat presented by terrorists.

You can't run from terrorists--they will seek you out wherever you are.

You can't hide from terrorists--they will seek you out in your home.

You can't reason with terrorists--they desire death (theirs and as many innocents as possible).

What's left but to face them, fight them, and kill them?

I did not put the guns in their hands. I do mean to be among those prying said guns from the terrorists' cold dead fingers--metaphorically in all likelihood, literally if circumstances warrant.

Terrorists aren't desperate men pushed to desperate measures. They are sick, twisted psychopathic thugs. They are evil. The only sane response to evil is oppose it, to destroy it before it destroys you.
