Here's the problem, RML - my brother is a psychopath, an alcoholic, and a drug addict.  Had he not located dad's gun that was already in the house, he would simply have gone and purchased one.  Or used a knife from the kitchen - which he's also threatened me with more than once in the past.  Do you propose that I should not have had kitchen knives in my kitchen either, unless they were under lock and key?  After all, knives have been used as weapons and specifically as tools of death since LONG before guns were invented or gunpowder was discovered.  At that point in time, he still had access to the gun safe - which, btw, were where all the guns were stored that I knew the location of prior to the incident.  (I hadn't managed to find dad's hiding place for the .45, or it would have been there as well - primarily to keep my brother from figuring out where it was "hidden.")

If guns were illegal in this area, he'd simply find something else to use as a weapon - just like he did when he tried to beat one of his former girlfriends half to death with a piece of 2x4 because she attempted to walk away from a verbal arguement so they would both have time to cool down and think rationally.  He didn't have access to a gun during That incident - it didn't stop him from finding a weapon to use, and nearly causing someone's death.

I carry a gun when I know I'm going to probably be in my brother's vacinity because he's Dangerous, and because he's made several threats against my life.  I carry a gun when I know I'm going to probably be in his vacinity because I can't count on the police to show up before I'm DEAD at my brother's hands, should he happen to show up drunk (probable) stoned (possible) and with a bug up his butt to get revenge (pretty much a given) for any number of imagined slights or things he considers somehow "my" fault.  I carry a gun whne I know I'm probably going to be around him because he's taller than me, has a longer reach than me, and outweighs me - I am not physically capable of preventing him from knocking me unconscious and then beating me to death if it came down to a fist fight.  I carry a gun because if I'm ever again placed in a situation where the choice is my life or his life - I choose MY life every time - and will have no remorse, no hesitation, and no compunction towards refraining from blowing his brains all over whatever wall happens to be behind him.  Then when he gets to his next life, or the afterlife (whichever you happen to believe in) - he can explain to the powers that be, or our mother's ghost if such exists - how he didn't think he was capable of being killed, because he's so damned certain that mom's ghost is "protecting him" and will (this is a Direct quote from him) "make any bullets bounce off so he can't be killed."

Believe me, a strawman argument like that one only serves to make your position seem weaker than it already is.

Of course.

If a cop pulls you over for running a light just show him your concealed carry permit and he'll tuck his tail between his legs and run whimpering away in his patrol car in fear of you.

Better yet, just tell him that the next time you see him in Wal-Mart you're going to take him out back and settle the score, because you own a gun.

Let me know how that works out for you.

Right! That's why the cops in the UK, France, and, from what I hear, the rest of Europe, are such vicious, bloodthirsty thugs. They know they can get away with it. And the only reason the police here are so polite and calling me "sir" is because they're afraid of me. That is such a wonderful foundation upon which to base a society. I hope that fantasy never comes true.

Maybe not pulling you over, but maybe they will be more accurate and/or less corrupt in obtaining a no knock warrant.

The 92 year old female wounded 3 officers before she was killed. It was later found out that the warrant was obtained with false information provided by one of the cops involved.

The FBI, the ATF, your local Deputy... they all have to treat a citizen with a little more respect if there's a chance they might be armed, or if they know that in the future they may meet again while said citizen is armed.

And lets not forget the liberties that Stalin, Hitler and their friends took with their unarmed citizenry, either.

How many millions were literally slaughtered?

Can't argue with that, and, don't get me wrong, I'd definitely go down shooting. I really don't expect any of that kind of crap to ever happen here. That said, I personally believe that if the shit were to actually hit the fan, it's just as likely that I'll need to defend myself from "patriot" militias and "minutemen" wackos in addition to the imperial storm troops.

I didn't realize that prison inmates have access to computers.  When the government crushed you, how many years did you get?
