That was Tina from SNL. Guess it's time to get out the rags and do a little polishing of your own. We wouldn't want those other bullets to outshine you.

That's actually quite brilliant. Can I use it?

By all means.  I'm not the author, merely someone who finds the statement handy now and again.

Robert Heinlein, actually.

Ignore "Hanlon".  He never existed.

The funny thing about your link are the outraged comments by the indignant American readers  .

Do you think that they take this whole thing a little too seriously? And if so, why would that be?

Some people take everything they hear and read very seriously....kinda scary when you think about it.

I agree thishereboi , and I see why that would be , I am not seeing it as scary though ..... fear is a mind killing disease ..... pity would be a be a better word ..... I would not waste it on this occasion though , it's merely a debate.

Silver and gold......always good to have
And perhaps we can go to Siberia to get oil..when the Russians are busy in Alaska

Hey while your grabbing the prescious metals, and the oil, mind if I get the base metals, and water.

Gold and silver are only of worth (Asides from in circutry) as long as someone else accepts that they have worth. And in an end day scenarion, water's worth more then gold.

Seriously though it is a rather hilarious map. Can't see Canada or The EU as a whole taking territory, though maybe a few of us might like our colonis back. So arguably a few states might get picked up. Though unlikely.

Just imagine this scenario though, a war with all three at once. You couldn't win. Heavily outnumbered on one front, and facing small but elite armies on the other. With russia flailing at the north.. Though  you'd have to have been malled economically and socially, before the others come like vultures.

My moneys on its safe and whole.

Oh and a point on the mayan claneder thing. I think you'll find there claenders were cyclic, after so many years it would go back to 0. and simply start again, and thats whgats happening in 2012, or so said our Uni's cartogrpher. Not much call for education on mayans here, though I assume accross the pond there is.

In response to Lady Ellen -

I agree it would take a recommitment to find a national purpose and mission again. I don't know if that's possible. I find it hard to believe the wealthy could take less for the good of all. I find it hard to believe  that most people would look past their personal interest for the good of all.

I think community altruism is not dead, but on the wane.

I found it interesting that you used the word 'take', from an economic view it is the poor that do the taking and the wealthy that do the earning.

So should the wealthy 'take' less?
Should they simply earn less perhaps? Put less back into the economy or stop creating business, stop building their wealth?

Too funny.

Does anyone actually believe this theory?

yes.  I believe that the 50 states as we know them 2008, will not be in 10 years.  it could be avoided if we return to states rights.  But that is not in the cards per the globalists.

in some way shape or  form, change is coming.  23 states as of now- have been looking at the plusses and minuses of seceding.

...it is awfully presumptuous to think Americans will starve to death for the bankers..draped in a flag.

You're wrong about that.  Americans give more to charity and volunteer more than the citizens of any other country in the world:

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Story?id=2682100&page=2
quote:

'No Other Country Comes Close'
The fact that most of America's charitable gifts come from volunteers, not government, demonstrates that Americans are different from people in every other country.

"No other country comes close," said Arthur Brooks, a professor of public administration at Syracuse University. Brooks studies charitable giving and has a new book, "Who Really Cares: America's Charity Divide."
"The fact is that Americans give more than the citizens of any other country. … They also volunteer more," Brooks said. "Americans per capita individually give about three and a half times more money per year, than the French per capita. … Seven times more than the Germans and 14 times more than the Italians."
"Now, you might notice that these other countries have different average incomes or different tax systems," he said. "But even when you take that into account, Americans give 10 times more than the Italians. The fact is, that Americans give on a different scale than anybody else in the world."

We also set a record in 2006, by giving $300 billion to charities:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19409188/
quote:

updated 2:03 a.m. CT, Mon., June. 25, 2007

function UpdateTimeStamp(pdt) {
var n = document.getElementById("udtD");
if(pdt != '' && n && window.DateTime) {
var dt = new DateTime();
pdt = dt.T2D(pdt);
if(dt.GetTZ(pdt)) {n.innerHTML = dt.D2S(pdt,((''.toLowerCase()=='false')?false:true));}
}
}
UpdateTimeStamp('633183518227970000');
NEW YORK - Americans gave nearly $300 billion to charitable causes last year, setting a new record and besting the 2005 total that had been boosted by a surge in aid to victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma and the Asian tsunami.

So I don't know where you get this idea that we are just a bunch of stingy people that only look out for themselves.  We give, and we give a lot.

Camille,

I don't begrudge anyone their right to earn a living. When I used the word take I was thinking of resources. How many cars and/or vacation homes does one NEED?

This thread was about the possible demise of the US. I was referring to the possiblity (not probablility or certainty) that people's self interest may trump the need for actual sacrifice in physically defending this country. Already there is a shrinking pool of professional military personnel. A larger and larger burden is being put on them. There is a smarmy mindset that thinks serving is for those with no other option.

I was not referring to people who do not give to charity.

I don't believe the map is accurate either, yet, the Chinese walking in and taking certain territories, yes.

The poor do the taking?

I tell you what.  Go to Yankee Stadium next year after C.C. Sabathia pitches the first game under his 7-year 161 million dollar contract  and ask the ushers, the beer vendors, and the janitors if they feel they are doing the taking.

How do you propose the Chinese would do that?  The Chinese don't really have much of a Navy; they do have to cross the Pacific to get here.  If they did have a means to get here, they have a problem with maintaining a supply line between their troops and China.  Seriously, these Red Dawn scenarios really have no basis in reality.  The Chinese couldn't do it, nor the Russians, nor the European Union, and especially not Mexico or Canada.  For fuck's sake, the Texas National Guard is better equipped than the entire Mexican Armed Forces.

Most of the National Guard's equipment has been thrashed to hell in Iraq.  Which is why a lot of states are nervous - that includes equipment used for natural disasters.

*sighs*  You think a lot of states are worried about a foreign invasion?  You're missing the point of the entire post.
