His.

I know some people use the term 'Indentured' and that settles ok with me on a personal level.

But 'His' is pretty plain speaking.

Perhaps a new term for "slave" would be useful to find, to advance better communication between the people who think they may be into BDSM but dare not go there (because of the conventional servitude notion of slave) and those of us who are already here.

I can't help but agree with IrishMist here ... fuck that.  I figured out what it means for me; I've been able to communicate that to others within the lifestyle without difficulty.  I don't think I've ever had a conversation with someone who thought they were into BDSM but were offput by the term, so it doesn't affect my life at all.  And I really don't feel the responsibility to change my term to suit others.

I just called my slaves what they were... "property".   I often used the term interchangeably anywhere you would use their name or relationship title.  When I took sex from them as service instead of mutually passionate or romantic exchange, it was a “property fuck”.

I don't know how well that sits in a world where you can't legally own a human or where authority seems a more common base for BDSM relationships than ownership.  But it’s the only offering I have for your endeavor.

that is Objectification, and I am not into that, some dominants might be into it, but they also tend to not give a rat's ass if they betray the trust that was given to their dominant of their own free will
and I suppose there are some thralls that get off on being nothing more than objects, that is their choice

edit: didn't purchase me, thus I am not owned and not an object, simple

Objectification?  Owning a “human” does not “dehumanize” them.  Does owning a dog make it a fucking object or less than a dog?  I can prove I own my dog, I have a sales receipt and it is my property.  Does it make them a victim of mistrust or betrayal?

You are free to have all the personal opinions and trust issues you want and can freely hold like or dislike for objectification.  But do not misrepresent reality in reply to my post.

And this is exactly the kind of thread I was talking about when I spoke out against the confusion and overuse of labelling.  Hypocrite me.

I am proud to be called slave.  Specifically, His slave.  It is the only accurate description of my place in His life.  I was thrilled to be given the privilege of being marked as *****'s slave late in 2007.

As for synonymous terms for slave, Sir has referred to me as "My property" and "My woman"

The term "slave" has been in use by the BDSM community for many years and it works fine for me just the way it is.  If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

I don't hold any negative connotations with the term "slave" so I'm perfectly fine with being called one. I'm rather proud to be called Master's slave because that's exactly what I am to him.

He also calls me "his", "slut", "cunt", "owned", "taken", "fuckslave" and many other terms..all of which I am for him.

I say if you yourself feel uncomfortable with the term "slave" then just find something else that works for you but since it's been around forever within bdsm I'd say it's working pretty well for most others.

Yes more labels to bring more confusion to some people, like me, minds. I do like asking a person what the word means to them, as IrishMist suggest.

I have long noticed the unfortunate confusion by those new to BDSM about certain words in BDSM that tend to be meant very differently than what the world outside BDSM means by them. Principal among such words is the word "slave." There have been many discussions about what "slave" (or "submissive" etc) mean in the BDSM community; this is NOT meant to be that discussion.

Understanding that most of the larger world sees the term "slave" as meaning human trafficking of a person who has been forced into servitude and is exploited and sold, that "slave" is not the "slave" meant in the BDSM community; the "slave" in the BDSM community involves a consensual aspect that is key. People will argue about the rest of the description and details of a "slave" in BDSM, but suffice to say, newbies hear the word "slave" and most often immediately think of the conventional human trafficking notion, until they learn more.

So I wonder if we as BDSM people who see themselves as "slave" (however that is understood) or who are Dominant with one who is seen as "slave," have instead embraced a substitute name for "slave" and what that substitute name might be. In doing so, it would seem to not invite the comparison to the human trafficking term of "slave."

For example, embracing some of the expressions of fantasy with BDSM, it seems to me that "maiden" might be a good substitute for "slave" as is maiden lissa instead of slave lissa.

Do you have a substitute term for "slave"?

ML. Nope no substitute, but as long as the term stays within the D/s concept I see nothing wrong with it.

I understand your need to be sympathetic to the problems of the world, but I don't think that it means that you can't use the word "slave".  I think we're all past the point where we need to be politically correct.

I have lots of terms and for many of them I have designed specific sets of behavior and am training mine to use each in different settings. Some that I have not seen already listed.
Doll or Dollface (dollface works for men also, IMO)
Meat
Mine
Creature
Disciple (or Student) when I am mentoring

And one I have never used but think might be cool:  Henchman

I think I suggested Thrall the last time we had this debate, and I tend to avoid using the word slave outside the community, sticking to sub or bottom, mainly because I don't want to be accused of human trafficking by hysterics of which there are plenty.

I don't, however, believe that the use of the term is going to go away anytime soon.

I thought we've done this one before.  Anyway, just in case anyone is curious, I'm partial to "bitch" and "cunt."

I'm sympathetic to this myself.... I can't help but associate the word "slave" with it's actual real-world meaning, even though I know that's not what people mean by it, and so of course it makes me uncomfortable. To each their own, of course, but I don't think I could ever call myself that.

Personally, I think "sub" is a broad enough term to cover everybody that likes to please and give up control, wether it's bedroom play or 24/7 TPE or anything in between.

ETA: oops, this was in reply to the OP, not the person above me.
