Slave is a negative word in my eyes. The use of the word as something negative has been around far longer than BDSM. It's not a term I use. I will be no one's slave and I would never want anyone to be my slave. I don't care if other people use the term in their relationships, it's their life etc etc. I see no point in creating a substitute term for slave. Person one will catch one day, who knows. I don't care. In my personal relations it's a word that will not be used and for me, that's all that matters. To each their own.

Thrall is a perfectly good word (it has been used to mean "slave"—doesn't anyone else recall the Star Trek episode "The Gamesters of Triskelion"?).
Another unisex term is servant. I have a number of submissive "servants," and perhaps will have even an indentured servant or two.

Out of curiousity, i checked the thesaurus. Of the words given for slave, i like the following the best: bondman (or bondmaid), chattel, serf, vassal. They all sound archaic, lol... but are still descriptive of the role. i like bondmaid because it fits best, as i am 'bound to service without wages'.

Or i am His chattel, to do with as He wishes. *shiver*

When i was brand spanking new to the lifestyle, so green i still had that 'new subbie smell', i did not want to be a slave. i thought it sounded scary and extreme, and the negative connotations of the word were part of the reason why. i doubt we are going to actually replace the word any time soon, though.

I don't feel that comfortable with the word that much either. If other people want to use it it's their choice, but I don't really want it to apply to me.

Depending on gender:
  1. Male slave ~ servant, gardner, groom, stable boy or if first boy: Butler
  2. Female slave ~ servant, maid, or if first girl: House Keeper
No head scratching here just using socially defined labels as defined by the status and work area..

It's hard to avoid using it, it's a common form of self identification in this life, i.e., if you think you're a slave, you are, and damned if anybody is going to talk you out of it anymore than the reverse.

There are modifications of course, there are anal slaves, service slaves, etc. -"bodyslave" for example, which is enough of a qualifier that nobody will think you have a bunch of Chinese Nationals locked up your basement.

I'm kind of partial to "Cockslave" myself, although it more sexual than service oriented connotations, and maybe more of a private/scene specific appellation - I think for general purposes, "subslave" is probably enough of a distinction to avoid confusion in most situations, if it is a concern, and it rolls off the tongue almost as easily as plain old slave.

If I don't use the term "slave" for Fox I merely call him "mine" -- simple and direct though a bit vague I think.

I renamed Fox. The connotations necessary come with the nickname, so I dont worry about a title.
Outside of that, I usually use boy, girl or little one. Appropriately condescending to get my point across without being offensive in anyway.

I will also use boy or girl to dominants who are trying to be too big for their britches and trying to dominate me in some way, shape or form.

I do not put much into titles. I talk more about personalities when I talk to vanilla friends. They understand someone having a submissive personality to mesh with my dominant one much better than they would my having a slave. Even my parents understand and expect me to have a boyfriend that is submissive to me, but they call them my boys, and Mom has called fox my little puppy.

Bugger!! Now I have this vividly coloured image of you having several large coulourful roosters chained up in your basement/garage ready to do nothing but sexually service you... .

No.... I use the term slave for my two girls and I use the definition to that term that is appropriate for my relationship.

If I substituted a term for every word that has a definition that has a different meaning outside of the BDSM context or even outside of my relationship... well... I might as well make a new language and I am not about to do that.

I'm a little late responding to this, but in our household, we use the term Keeper and servant -- for us, this embraces the entire scope of relationship possibilities from the part-time, or short-term individual who is coming to us to participate in one or two specialized activities to the individuals who have turned their entire lives over to the household... it also embraces our dominant membership who are involved in more scene-only focused interactions with given servants -and- those who are involved in highly managed whole-life situations. This eliminates entire debates in our house about Master vs. Dominant or submissive vs. slave... it makes those discussions completely irrelevant, as each individual is able to control or serve in encompassing or situational manner. It also dealt with some issues that I have (as a linguistic fetishist) about perceived inaccuracies in existing terminology.

We also use Top/bottom for very short term situations or in situations like mine, where I am a Keeper in the household, but enjoy participating as a bottom in body modification and spiritual-expressive-yielding encounters in order to develop aspects of myself that are best awakened or experienced in the states that I can reach through those tools, but where, in general, I can't really call myself a 'switch', since I don't really yield up any of my responsibilities as Keeper when I participate.

I like "it" when refering to male slaves. I don't even use an identifying word in person for male slaves. I just point or look at it. little pet for slave girls because I personally love them and treat them like real pets and little boi for gay or bi subs or slaves.

but but but, if I'm not a slave, how can I have a slave rebellion (which I threatened to do if he was going to insist on over eating and having me cook it for him).

Seriously, I really don't care what I'm called, what others think about about what I am called or what others think about the venacular in general.  You can't please everyone all the time.  Luckily I only have one the I desire to please, he happens to like the term "slave".

Ironically, my Irish great-grandmother was a bond-servent and I dislike that term far more-- see how perspective changes everything (not to mention that a bond servant usually was endentured for a specific number of years)

People take a lot of liberties with terms, slave among them.  As we all know, it isn't the same as submissive, though some use them interchangably.  Also, different people self-define using the term in various ways.  Slave is not the only word with which that is the case.  Who cares what 'most of the larger world' thinks about the term slave?  Seriously.  I mean, use the term if you and yours wish to, dont if you don't.  As for ways to introduce yourself or your slave to the general public, I imagine that you could use  more vanilla-friendly terms as some suggested.  Your degree of being 'out' may dictate some of your proclamations.  It's not a descriptor I use for myself and the only time I have used it in a relationship, it was a private term between the person I was using it toward and myself.  But really, as far as 'most of the larger world' goes, it makes little impact on how I choose to term me and mine.

man-bitch has always held a special place in my heart.

Incidentally, that was the official term to be used in “The Ten Commandments” until Chuck Heston objected to it.
