ORIGINAL: Amaros It's true that in classical times, slavery had slightly different connotations, slaves were more like trusted members of the household, and often attained very high status. It really wasn't until the institution of American slavery that the term took on it's connotations of helplessness, slaves were objectified as, and treated like animals, i.e., subhuman, largely promulgated in defense of the institution, but there are some hints of it in Biblical accounts involving slavery as well. And, to be honest, there are examples of both fantasies at work in BDSM, and a "slave" can range from abject objectification (cages, leashes, etc.) to a more classical service role, and everything in between. Personally I'm more attracted to the classical form, but the other is fun to play around with if your partner is into objectification. Dont forget that slave making evolved as a way of making use of your captured enemies rather than killing them off. Slavery was different in Rome yes, but it had its share of cruelty, dehumanization and barbarism, too. Torturing the defendant's slave during trial to get the truth during questioning wasn't uncommon. Just one example.
