I have a number of decks but I am fondest of the Marseilles as an effective tool

It could be parochial of me, but the Tarot de Marseille is the one and only, as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, it's parochial, but we'll forgive you just this once....... (and that's the Royal we ;) )

The Marseille deck is considered a standard by purists because it's got some of the oldest existing symbology.  Unfortunately, that is also the inherant Problem with the Marseille deck for some of us - the Symbology is OLD and therefore holds little to no current contextual imagry meaning.

I always understood that the Rider deck sprang from an attempt to sort of "update" the imagry of the Marseille deck - good attempt, but even it is so old, and culture changing so quickly these days, that the symbolism is beginning to loose it's relevance and meaning.

A lot of the newer decks were developed using the Marseille and Rider decks as symbology guidelines, but with differing aesthetic tastes taken into account, significantly updated symbology utilized in the artwork, and I've seen culture-specific references within some of the newer decks as well.  Things that in American society hold context and significance, but wouldn't elsewhere - or vise versa.

I like my Catpeople deck for it's Aesthetics.  I like my Daughters of the Moon deck both for the Aesthetics and for specifics within the symbology - things that pertain to a duelist pantheon that includes (and places significance in) a goddess - rather than symbology that is strictly patriarchal in nature (which is the case in both the Marseille and Rider decks, using much older symbology.)

Logic is all well and good, to see the world. However, faith or even hope is needed to leaven logic when dealing with mysticism and prophecy. ( Or so my father told me when he was teaching me Tarot.)
I myself never had much luck with Tarot card readings, so I stuck with Runic symbols and their readings.

In a debate progress is made which means someone must be right and someone must be wrong, sadly. All other situations here I would term conversations.

Also people use the term open minded in a derogatory fashion against people if you ask me. We can’t be completely open minded can we, there are limits no? Open mindedness is a balance, you can’t suspend your disbelief to the point that everything you hold to be true is actually false. Sometimes we are proven wrong but not in a huge way that goes against everything we know or believe in, that is rare. You can’t build knowledge in an inconsistent way where no two pieces of information support one another.

Possibly.  Rider was the first deck I was given, and the one that I learned on.  I still have the Marseille deck that dad had when he and mom got married, which was the first deck I ever Saw.  Dad gave me the Rider deck to start actually learning on about 2 years after I first saw his Marseille deck, because I continued to express an interest in learning how to read them (mostly cause it was something that I knew would cause my grandmother to blow a gasket and possibly stroke out from sheer outrage at "dabbling with the devil"), but he didn't feel like his old Marseille was the "Right" deck for me.  He even made the comment - when he gave me the Rider deck - that I would eventually find the deck that was "meant" for me, because I would feel an immediate connection to it before I ever bought it.  He was right - for me, it was Daughters of the Moon, and I didn't actually come across that deck until 4 years ago.  I likely won't ever get rid of dad's old Marseille simply for the sentimental value that it continues to hold - but I do Not attempt to do any sort of readings with it, it's symbology simply holds little reference for me.

Part of that, though, lies in the individual - much like the your kink ain't my kink but that's ok as long as you don't try to force me to take part in your kink thing.  Different decks - and deck styles, and artistic representations of the symbology - are going to suit different people for a lot of different reasons.  I've seen some positively INCREDIBLE artwork on some of the decks out there these days, but a lot of it isn't on decks that I would ever actually Use - I'd simply keep them to browse the artwork from time to time if I bought them.  I've seen a few decks that had positively horrid artwork that I knew instinctively I could get a good clear reading from - even though the artwork itself made me slightly ill to look at - because the Symbology was clear as day  - to me.

If the Marseille deck's symbology - moldy as I think it is lol - holds significance and meaning to you..... then... well... it still holds significance and meaning, and therefore should probably not be Lightly tossed aside in favor of something newer, shinier, or more stylish.... unless you yourself are looking for something more up to date and stylish.  (That may sound like a joke, but I have an aquaintance here locally who has several decks, and which one she uses depends both on her mood and what "coordinates" with her personal style for that day! She's something of a would-be fashionista.)

Yes, hope is both gift and curse. It can give rise to greatness, or when removed, kill millions without mercy. All a matter of opinion. Or perspective. But my point-of-opinion remains.

marseilles is okay, and know many that use it. Yes I will recommend rider-wait to people just learning, but have also been able to refer other decks to those who cant hear the rider waite speak to them. I noticed an interesting factor, people will put the tarot cards away because they feel they don't speak to them. After I suggest different decks to them, most of the time the will find one that speaks to them. I am a tarot deck junkie and love buying new decks, as well as giving many away.

I'll admit I got the Rider-Waite after I'd already been reading for five years on the gothic deck. I much prefer the latter, but RW does have a certain feel of 'class' to it.

I'm in the market for a new deck, but since I'm currently penniless that'll have to wait :)

don't get me started about debates....
I lost my last one....

But about Tarot (back to topic)

Basically, each card has more than one meaning....
The Death Card does not always mean death....
The reader...uses the tarot in conjunction with cold reading of the subject...

In essence (this is my opinion) to tell the subject what they want to hear in a
with a cryptic and mystical meaning....

Like the Magic Eight Ball..

General reply ;

I have in fact got a tarot deck, the Sharman - Caselli deck, chosen because it was devoid of any symbology that could be considered hocus pocus, I did not want any of that in it. I dip in to it now and again, just simple stuff, three card spread, I read  for myself only, and often use it when the mind is questioning. The reason I dip out of tarot, is not because it does not answer my questions or provide a direction of insight, scarily, it does offer an insight, but I dip out because with me, I need to understand the science if there is any. I switch between accepting esoterical, and questioning scientific  on a regular basis, today was one of those times I was somewhere between the two states, so I asked here.

I agree that it's down to what some are suited to. I favour the Marseilles and dont see it as old or stale at all,I don't think that these days' decks have the direct touch that most querants seem to want (re: my earlier response to kittinSol .... I don't do subtlety that often)
Content wise,I think it's all there and more, a lot of things the Rider Waite achieve are aesthetic.
I do read the Thoth too, which tends to do the trick when it comes to visual impact ! I do find it is about as "modern" as I can go .
I have got a Celtic deck which confuses the pants off a lot .... it has 3 "suits" , not four and the whole thing is related to ancient Celtic culture (its 20 years old so I don't know if it can still be got) It's like a back to school experience if you've only ever had standard 78 card European ones to play with !

Which is true... but as long as they're not consciously changing anything in their behavior then it's not *actively* being affected, same principal with the person giving the reading.

If someone thinks that if they try to get a certain answer from divination, what happens will fit the reading then they're impassioned idiots. The only 'power' or 'answer' comes from an untainted process... even then it is murky at best.

Still, it's a lot of fun. That's really the reason I used to read for others (I've only done it for money once, that was for a penny so :P) or get myself read.

Perhaps astrology might serve you better? Especially heliocentric and horary, since they offer more of a scientific factor.

My general opinion on tarot, runes and other forms of divination is that these objects are tools for guiding the subconscious mind and finding the paths most likely to take place.  When giving readings for other people I caution them that what is being shown is the most likely outcome given the current circumstances, that making a different choice can alter the entire projection.

Sir has the Marseilles deck and i am permitted to use it when at his house. He also bought me the Animal-wise Tarot because of my link to animals/birds etc. It is a fascinating deck, but not one i use for work. This is not tarot, but have you ever seen or used the Cartouche cards. Those I use a lot on myself as well for period of digging deep within my spiritual side.  I am passionate with Tarot and the symbols on them, since for me the activate my subconscious and at like hollow bones. Usually I will see scenes played out on a card that is not there, hence why I prefer tarot with symbols and pictures. Interesting thing, most decks though will not do that for me. Thoth is another deck that I can do that with as well.

I was taught that the Tarot isn't for predicting the future.  The cards and the reader give a POSSIBLE outcome if the querant continues down the path that they are on.  They are not "doomed" to their own fate, but are very much in control of their own lives.  And the cards and reader help the querant to seek and find the answers within him or herself.  And one thing you never do is give medical advice based on the cards.  Ever.

There is a certain card that I pick out of the 78 card deck every single time I do a reading for myself.  They're shuffled and picked randomly (or are they? lol) but that card has come out of that deck for me every single time in the ten years that I've been reading them.  It's eerie.  And "romance" cards never come out, and there are actually quite a few of them in the deck, lol.

I love the Morgan Greer deck.  It's the one that "talks" to me.  The Enchanted Tarot is a beautiful deck.  The cards are too big for my hands to work with, but I enjoy just looking at them.
