TranceTara -> RE: Any one else Obamarized today with the Inauguration coverage? (1/21/2009 12:19:02 AM)
I'm not angry. I am actually amused at the ridiculous spectacle I have been witnessing today. I really didn't think that the "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" sing-a-long from Clinton's inauguration could be topped on my sickenly gagging scale of mass displays of sappy, sheep like behavior. But I was horribly wrong.
I can understand where you are coming from. I had mixed feelings about today. On the one hand, I was quite joyous and had tears in my eyes as I witnessed how we have progressed as a nation from the days of slavery to now having a black president. I was driving down Rosa Parks freeway last night and thought how far we have come. On the other hand, I saw all these people gathering to witness history. They were rejoicing and expressing such happiness. Yet, how many, when they go back home, will treat others with peaceful loving kindness in their everyday activities? I saw one woman crying because it was so crowded she could not actually be near a big screen or witnessing Obama. She cried and said, "This is not fair?" At that I began to feel sorry for everyone. How deluded to think this one day can bring about change. What is not fair is that about every 4 seconds a child dies of starvation. What is not fair is innocent people get bombed because politicians can't agree on things. People kept saying they were there to witness history and to say, "I was there." I, I, I, me, me, me. That is when I began to lose my exuberance. Sure, we need some hope and joy in this world, for it is not just our country having financial difficulty. (I have a friend in Iceland who was donating essential oils and having healing circles for those who lost jobs and homes when they went bankrupt.) It was a honeymoon and now the work must begin, for each and every one of us. I agree with President Obama that we all need to make a sacrifice. We all need to be of service in some way for people are hurting. I don't have a lot of physical strength these days but found a site that is a charity that knits clothes for premie babies. I can do that to help someone without the funds to buy their baby clothes. Also, I do hope that President Obama can do some good and will be sending him all the positive energy I can. (And yes, I will be sending former President Bush some healing energy as well for all the negative energy projected onto him is doing him, and our world no good. I am the first to admit I am guilty of that negative energy and I see how wrong I was for that does no one any good.) President Obama has a long road ahead of him. The thing is, the way I see it, it's like putting paint on a house that has been eaten away by termites. A friend of mine had that happen. One day he left on an errand and came back to a front porch and back porch. Everything else had crumbled. When the foundation is rotting away because of dishonest, unethical business practices; because greed and avarice are the norm, well, the "house" needs to be "gutted". Our western world materialistic paradigm is no longer suited for the evolution our planet is going through. We need to become one people united so that we can deal with the climate changes, new forms of energy, and a new consciousness. Just read all the opinions about today's inauguration. We all have different perceptions. All of them are right from our point of view. So, how can we agree on any one solution? We just need to see where we can be of benefit and compromise and make a sacrifice here or there. As for the stock market, I have some friends who are very active in trading and one told me on the first anniversary of 9/11 the market closed at 911. There are some so powerful they can do that. I have no faith in those greedy men, and some women, who control the market. They are only in it for themselves. How much money does one person need? How many of us are willing to make sacrifices in our desires to make sure all are fed? I look at my studio apartment and realize to most on this planet it's a luxury. I now need to see where I can cut back more so I can give more. It's easier said than done for I am addicted to my wants, which far outweigh my needs. And that is where it all begins for me. I need to find that peace and happiness within and realize my needs are very little. Sure, it's nice to have a treat now and then, but when others can't get a meal, when they have no home or healthcare, how fair is that? These are questions I ask myself every day. I have no perfect answers. I can only look within and do my best and I think that is the message I got from President Obama when he was painting a house yesterday and said we all need to give a little. I can only speak for myself and after reading what you all wrote I get a broader perspective on things. Thank you. And yes, I am proud to be an American, but in no way do I feel we are a superior country. I think we have a lot to offer but we are all one people. I feel we have a lot to learn from other countries, other cultures. One day maybe we'll all see that and not be divided by boundaries of any sort. And I see I may come across a bit too serious so let me quote a most famous philosopher: "A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five." "I do not care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members." "While hunting in Africa, I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How an elephant got into my pajamas I'll never know." "Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know." ---Groucho Marx
