I'm British and I have a water pistol.  It's really cool - shoots level up to about 3 metres.  I think everyone should have one.

Does that count?

Yep funny eh?

Perhaps the Brits here should start insisting that Americans do things differently. I think you should be able to buy alcohol in supermarkets. Why don't you take a vote on it. Then you can be like us.

LOL Susie.. in SOME places you CAN buy liquor in a grocery store....

Well some of the places I have been you can't and we had to go to a liquor store. Here all supermarkets and even some of the little corner shops sell a whole range of things from wine and beer to champagne and vodka.  Maybe I just spent too much time in Utah!

I'm afraid it points out not how we are different but are alike.... scary don't you think..

We're alike in the sense that we all have two arms, two legs and a head, granted, but there are marked cultural differences.....

Take English and American soap operas. The American versions are full of characters who wake up in the morning with a full quota of make-up and not a hair out of place; they present a picture of families that are upwardly mobile and successful. English soap operas are gritty, working class, usually inhabited by characters down on their luck and they're shown warts and all. It may seem fairly innocuous, but I think it displays an English tendancy toward realism and focus on personal experience.

Take psychiatry. It is said over here that Americans have two psychiatrists per person - the preferred choice and a reserve in case the preferred choice has a day off. Most of us find this reliance on 'mind readers' to be bizarre. Again, I think it displays an English tendancy toward realism.

Anyway, guns......they're not in our consciousness.....in the same way that hacking indiscriminately at our bollocks with a scythe isn't in our consciousness. It's not that we're vehemently anti-gun. I'm certainly not. The point is that when we're considering our rights and civil liberties, guns do not enter into the equation.

The point I am making is you own the gun to protect your family but also have said you don't need a gun to protect yourself therefore I assume you don't need one to protect your family? Unless you are saying it's easier to protect yourself than to protect your family because a gun is required for the latter?

If 4 men break into my house at night, I may be able to take 2 of them before the other two get me. With my gun i could likely kill all of them before they made it upstairs to the bedrooms. Or at least hold them off for the 5 to 10 minutes it will take for the police to show up. I highly doubt my grandmother can defend herself against them. Neither would my sister. But with my gun their chance improves greatly. Right now i am about 500 miles away from the house. Who is at home protecting them? Mr 45 that's who. And he is ever vigilant. And yes protecting 1 life is easier than 3.

It is useful to know that most non English inhabitants of these island will support ANYONE against England and the English are notable for their appreciation of this by its complete abscence. So roll on the Six Nations Rugby (starts very soon) (in which you will a lot of French Celts supporting their national side and being renowned for not wishing to be associated with anything English).

Kidding,as you say,is generally accepted amongst this rivalry,so long as it it genuine.

Pirate

Yeah when I lived in  Cardiff I got spat on by a Welshman when we beat them in one match during 6 nations, it was very surreal (I didnt even have time to tell him I was half Welsh) and then of course "as long as we beat the English" comes on the sound system in every Welsh pub. Sigh I do wish we could all just get along *starts singing about love and flowers*

Is four people breaking into your house a regular occurrence, has it ever happened? Or is it just fear and news headlines?  We can’t live in constant fear of crime, I’d say the main difference between you protecting yourself and your family is the stakes are higher for you and you are not willing to take the same chances or profess with certainty your ability to protect yourself from one criminal.

If four people break into your house with guns:

They have the element of surprise (their advantage)
They don’t know your house layout and added to that it could be dark (your advantage)
They are prepared to do whatever to get what they want, it’s not a hypothetical situation for them. They’ve probably also been shot at or attacked before when other crimes have gone wrong. Let us assume them entering a house with an armed occupant isn’t anything new to them. (their advantage)
You may have suffered the same experience before, this is the only thing that will prepare you for that unique experience, equally some may not have this experience (your or their advantage).

Perhaps it was a bad exampe to use but I know a few times when I was there and shopping in a supermarket I could not buy vodka or snaps and was told I had to go to a liquor store to get it.

The point was as you said is why does anyone care if we have guns or not here. We are quite happy with things they way they are.

That's assuming that (a) the 4 men aren't also carrying guns and (b) you can produce the gun, aim and fire quicker than the other people can.

But you know the way I see it the reason a lot of the guys on Death Row in places like Texas are there because they were able to use a gun quicker than the homeowner.

And you call that protection?

I thought I was the one exploring the feminine side...you don't really watch soap operas of any kind do you!

I'm from Missouri... who have you been talking to about shrinks? I though you were into realism...sounds like a fantasy to me.

So you speak for all in the UK...yes realism.. .by the way did you read my post on guns in this thread?

Not sure what state you live in, but I have lived in six states, and traveled many more.  Can't recall one that sold vodka or any other liquor in supermarkets.  Unless you're talking about the watered-down half-proof crap that some states allow.

I'm not sure easily available and cheap alcohol is the best thing about being British anyhow. Quite depressing if that's the best thing you can boast of your society.

No, just an amusing contrast.

Where I live you can't purchase liquor on Sundays.

Apparently because we should all be spending our Sundays on our knees in prayer.

I can, however, go down to Wal-mart and buy a handgun.

I remember a time long ago where you could walk to the centre of London on a Sunday and they'd be no one there. It’s the nearest experience a person could have to being in one of those apocalyptic films where everyone else died of the plague. No wild lions though as in the 'I am Legend' film, how did they populate New York so quickly?

Nowadays it's 24/7 consumption and the multi-faith society means no day of the week is any more sacred than another. Sad in some ways because it used to be a day when you weren't obliged to work and everyone was in the same boat and so didn't have to compete for jobs. Ah those were the days.
