Let's think outside the box here.  The issue is obvious - the guy did not have the money to pay his bill.  So who should pay it?

He had the money.

It was stated he had over $600K in savings  and the police found money attached to his utility bills.

The issue is proper notification by the utility company, which was absent.

That's exactly why socialism doesn't work, right there.

Are you kidding? People will try to mooch whatever they can, not saying the old man did, but there's a good reason the companies are so jaded towards people who owe.

Yeah, damn good thing they froze that old socialist bastard.

Some people just have to learn their lessons the hard way.

I've been seeing the news reports today about the ice storm that has taken out the power to millions of people.  I think it is just awful that nature is allowed to leave people without electricity.  Some of them might very well die.  I think we need a law, so that weather isn't allowed to do this ever again.

     It is just criminal

How many old people have you adopted?  How many times have you been to the local old folks home?  How many times have you gone to visit a shut in?  How many times have you paid a person's bill who couldn't pay it?

What in the hell does this have to do with anything?

We're not talking philanthropy here.

We are talking about a company providing a vital, life-sustaining service that chose to put money issues over life issues.

Yes I know TH, because we live in a brutal world where everyone must fend for themselves without any help.

Of course, the bright side is there are many, many people who do not share your dismal views of life.

your dismal views.

         There you go again...

The stories I saw about the affected areas all mentioned how shelters had been opened, people were going to stay with family and friends both neighbors and public safety officials were checking on the elderly.  I always find the silver lining to such calamities in how local people and communities come together in times like this.

He was 93 years old.

Did you miss that?

Is it conceivable to you that he had no family and few friends at that age?

Did he live in an area where he had nearby neighbors or was he in a rural area where there was no one to likely check on him?

Umm, RML?  Did you not catch that I was referring to the mass power outages from the ice storms?  I already stated that the elderly dying as a result of extreme weather is a tragedy.  I even offered a constructive thought on what concerned individuals can do to help.

Something ain't working somewhere.  Maybe your computer screen?

Gee, I don't know.

I'll check.

Think I should call the electric company?

IMO, if you don't pay your utility bill your service should be terminated no matter what time of year it is.

Your service should be terminated, or why not just make it that you should be terminated? It's so much more simple after all.

TY kittinSol

Let's cut through all the bull and doublespeak.

IF you are not a 'viable consumer', you cease to have worth IN ANY FORM.

Well, until we can get that Soylent Green bit up and running.

Sad thing is, this old soul had the cash, clipped to the utility bill... had it, attached to the bill,
clearly intended the cash for that bill... yet was KILLED nevertheless.

Ya, who could have known that that poor old git HAD THE CASH, right?

Truly sad.
