Here's a local story about it: http://www.wnem.com/news/18566890/detail.html

Marvin Schur was his name and he was a veteran of the Second World War.  I don't know why he didn't pay his bill, and I don't care.  He was a 93 year old man, and he served this country.  Someone should have been looking out for him, and the damn power company up there should have had some system in place to prevent this.  If you read what the coroner said, "Schur died a painful death due to the hypothermia." that should be enough for you.  What is extremely sad is that we are used to things like this happening.  We allow the vulnerable to fall through the cracks, and we shrug our shoulders.  It's not supposed to be that way.

I just keep thinking of all that was encompassed by this man's life... 93 years. All the things he's done, all the people whose lives he's touched... the things he's seen, the experiences he's had, how many moments he's shared with so many other human beings and the effects he's had on those peoples' lives.... and this is the way it all ends for him. He couldn't  afford to pay his electric bill any more, so it was OK for him to die. Because that's just the price we have to pay to make sure nobody gets electricity for free.

How many old people have you adopted?  How many times have you been to the local old folks home?  How many times have you gone to visit a shut in?  How many times have you paid a person's bill who couldn't pay it?

I guess you don't mean society including you.  I guess you mean society as in the government should pay for everything.
I don't think it's okay, but I'm not sitting on the internet preaching to everyone else while doing nothing myself.

Doesn't society owe it to its elderly citizens to show them basic respect, and to not let them die for non-payment of a utility bill? Is this it, then: capital punishment if you can't afford to heat your home? How dehumanized have we become that we let a man die of cold because of a thousand bucks? How dehumanized are you, and the handful of others who think this death is normal, that you make justifications and rationalisations for it? And all you can do is make cheap jokes? It's sad.

You are defending the indefensible by trying to make yet another ad hominem attack on someone whose opinion you generally dislike: considering you are the woman who asked for another 9/11 just to teach someone a lesson, I find this a little disingenuous of you. You make an awful lot of assumptions: if you don't like my take on it, check out slaveboy's. He makes much sense of this ugly mess.

This could happen to my neighbor today. I don't check on my neighbors, do you?

I would be more impressed if you didn't sit and talk about how everyone else is wrong, but about how what you are doing that is right.  If all you do is sit in judgement, you're not really doing anything but sitting, now are you?

And don't you feel better about yourself, while you are sitting in a chatroom judging everyone else?

What gives you the moral high ground that you can sit there and condemn us for expressing compassion and concern?

Ok well I agree with KS in everything she has said, and I volunteer at a nursing home sitting with them as well as working as a carer and training to be a social worker. We do owe these people. Many of them veterans. Also I believe that people with luck should help those without it, I believe that it is our responsibility to make the world a better place and make sure that our governments knows that it is important to us.

But the difference is, I'm not shrugging my shoulders while saying everyone else is bad and how can society let this happen.  We should be saying how am *I* letting this happen.  Not the big bad governemt or the big bad electric company.

Everyone who feels really bad about this should put up or shut up.  Pay extra on your electric bill and make sure you note that it is for a disabled person, or remember that we are ALL the cause.

How the fuck do you know what we all do with our private lives, Sepphora? Because you divination skills leave much to be concerned.

I actually visit my neighbors. There is an old folks home near me and I've been there a few times and talked to them, I love to hear stories of how things used to be. In alot of cases in my opinion, the stories they tell are worth more than any history book, class, or "study". If I had the money to help a few people less fortunate than myself I would. If I had even a few more hours in the day I would gladly volunteer to listen to even more of their stories and record them and take in how much things have changed. A lot of the time I loathe people I won't lie. But in the end, we all have a story to tell, and I hope I can tell mine one day and not freeze to death alone because my power was shut off.

Well stop expressing your compassion and concern, and actually DO something about it.  What gives you the moral high ground do nothing and say everyone else is bad for doing nothing?

You do not know what I, nor anyone else, actually do with our private lives. If we hate an aspect of our society, we have the right to say it. And if you don't like that... shut your ears.

Slaveboyforyou and Damnedpanda, wonderful points thankyou.
At 93 the guy deserved a better end than hypothermia because of a unpaid bill.

I'm a little bewildered why you are being so negative towards folks that are verbalizing their anger over this story.  You're on the forums here with the rest of us.  Why do you have such a problem with folks expressing their opinions on this matter?

It's a horrible story, and you shouldn't call a person's charity into question just because they express outrage over this.  The fact is that most of us don't live in Bay City, Michigan.  We can't and couldn't have done anything about this.
