A rant I am afraid, but I am fed up with it,

Why is Vista so slow ?

I have looked all over the net for an answer, but no one seems to be able to put a finger on the problem, but everyone appears to be complaining about it. I used a new machine today which was running XP home, the thing flew, click something, a split second later, it was there, almost in half a blink of an eye. Vista on the other hand, like five minutes to load up from cold, click on something, it is like it goes, '' duh, what am I doing, why am I here, oh, I know I have got to do something, I suppose I'd better do it, but I will do it at my pace, slowtime '', in short this operating system is fucking crap. Oh and as to what I have in the start menu, very little, I have pared that down only to what is necessary, the rest I start once the thing is running and stable.

Has anyone got any ideas why this microshaft effort is so lousy, is this yet another operating system that is going to end up on the shelf with windows millenium edition ? I should have bought a mac, next time which might be very soon, I will get a mac, this thing, my very first real computer, one I spent hard earned cash for has severely dissapointed me, microshaft can go and fuck themselves, they have lost a future customer.

How much memory do you have and how fast does your processor run?

There are a lot of machines out there that are fast with XP and are ever so sloooooow with Vista.

Lighten up, Francis.

I've been using Vista since the beta2 release and it runs as fast or faster than the previous install of XP Professional did.  If you're on the low end of the acceptable hardware list, yes, it's not going to be a speed demon.  What are your system specs (RAM/CPU/video card)?

An, you should have paid up and got XP. Even XP can get out of hand, but I think they have taken it to new heights (depths ? ) with Vista.

Regardless of the variety Windows is a resouce hog. If you can manage to run a clean system, and by that I mean no antivirus, no anti anything bacause you simply do not need it, you can run XP on an old 433. I do. People are impressed by how fast it runs. It boots and shuts down quickly, they wonder why they bought their new POS.

But when it has been running for like 72 hours it does slow down, in which case it needs a reboot. I reboot it and everything is fine. See XP was designed so that it would run on a P2 class machine. Mine is only a class P3. This was to get the old 98 users to switch.

Glitch for glitch, I like XP now. It does slow down if it doesn't get a reboot like every day, but I have had overall less problems than I did with 98. I actually had better functionality in 98 for some things, but other issues forced the upgrade.

Of course if you go with XP on a new PC it might not have all the device drivers, so we are where ? We are like ten years ago when I was always downloading that stuff for people. What has progress wrought now ?

For one over the years are games that run best if you set it to run in "MS-DOS COMPATIBILIY MODE" or something like that.

Some progress. Perhaps I should just throw that Linux disk in and be done with all the problems.

In Many cases it isn't Vista at all it's the Computer configurations.

Take your Computer to a Vista Certified Dealer and Pay the 150 to 200 dollars PLUS the NECESSARY UPGRADES Not included in the Initial Service Bench cost to find out that in many cases you computer is using either a Video Card, Sound Card, or After Market part that is Not Vista Compatible and since Vista Monitors EVERYTHING is get bogged down on these parts that are not right.

Vista as a Program works find when on the right computer. Most people that I know that have issues with vista have it on a Desktop that was deemed Vista COMPATIBLE not VISTA READY! There is a HUGE Dirrerence here.

Just Take my word and look into it call a distribuitor and ask if they are a CERTIFED Vista Dealer.

Hopefully all the software you use is Vista compatable.

From a business perspective, Vista is a dog that barely hunts. Problems adding it to an XP network, problems getting older software and hardware to run, constantly have to say "Yes I really do want to run this program" and various other things. They will always come out with a new OS every few years so they can make money. This time they tried to hard to create an OS that also has security features similar to many AV and Firewall software.

All my clients are still ordering PC's with an XP Pro downgrade.

I am the sort of person that always researches before I do, the things I do I am confident will work because I have put in the work beforehand. I bought this machine with all I could muster, hard earned cash to replace my old windows 98. The old machine I have just recently dumped, a year after the purchace of this machine, why did I hang onto it for so long, I hung onto it, because it was reliable and did the job, but speed was not it's forte. For the first time in years I had the cash, I plumped for a new machine under the belief it would be faster and I could engage in all that everyone else talked about, youtube, online music and all. Well, I can get those things, that is true, but speed I did'nt get. So, cost for a HP 530 notebook, £400 here, whatever that is in other currencies, perhaps an entry level machine, but it is all I could afford, it's specs are as follows;

Vista home basic
1.67gigahertz Intel Core Duo
2048 kb secondary memory cache
80gb hdd (50% free)
1gb ram ( I know the ram is low, but I have tackled HP about the issue, not their problem as vista needed more than first known, they built the machine to what specs microshaft gave them)

What I do on this machine, is image work, though there are no images larger than 95kb in total, thumbnails, I take 3mb images off as soon as I have them, other than that, the main work is internet. I run picasa and photoshp CS3 and very little else. Five minutes or so to load from cold, a bit much do you not think?

I have the first vista and am in hell.  My machine is fast... it is just stupid!  It loses things... even programs... doesn't recognize things... you can be working on something and poof... gone.  It doesn't allow me to get into things I should be able to get into... like pictures or music...  You can shut it off and have settings one way and the next day... different.  Backups are pure hell and don't work right and use up my system resources and then the constant messages.

I didn't have serious problems until I put the first patch on as recommended and now the whole thing is a mess and I couldn't un-install it.  The computer run's me, not me running it.  I was wondering if the newer vista would be better and would be willing to buy it, but who knows if I can change it.  But then I am on an HP and they added their own little hell to the mix.  I was told to dump the whole machine and get a new one.  BS if I am going to keep paying for their stupidity and mistakes and then buy more!

I know how you feel!

I must be easy to please because aside from the upgrade I did to add memory (because of my Adobe photoshop programme dragging it down with the size of my photo files) I have been very very happy. Even that upgrade was easy and inexpensive. I just logged into the Crucial site and it told me what I needed. $30 and a few days later, I had my (thingamajiggies) and switched them out. Voila'........faster and now I can edit the monster files without it bogging down.

You so need more RAM. Image manipulation is RAM intensive, and you're underpower for the OS to start with.

I dont care for how hard it is to move files.

if you mean shut down and start up- that does take long.  if you put it in sleep it will start up faster.  also turn off that dumb "help center" window that pops up.

if this is new- beware of the antivirus,  it presupposes you wish to pay after the 30 days is up.

I agree that you definitely need more memory, however, since you say you do mainly graphic (photo) work with it, you should also consider a high end video card with at least 512mb on-board memory and an on-board processor. This will give you very smooth performance. The memory is very cheap to upgrade, the video card will cost you a few $$.

Vista is a piece of shit that Bill Gates will spend eternity rotting in the fires of hell for.

(That wasn't too over the top, was it?)

I'd like someone who likes Vista to explain to me why the increased need for memory and other resources are the result of anything other than Microsoft's desire to prevent you from using your PC as you desire, and how they wish to force you to use it.

Not to mention the recent security problems with Internet Explorer.  I've been using Firefox since Microsoft hasn't been able to guarantee their solutions.

.....two words...mass market. Those of us on these fora are generally relatively computer savvy. We don't respond to emails from Nigerian bankers, nor do we think that a lottery we never entered has decided we have won a few million. We don't think that Russian princesses have read our profiles and want to marry us, nor do we  think that a firewall is a useless nuisance.
Vista is designed to be idiot proof. However, turn off  most of the whistles and bells and it's not that bad. i remember the fuss when XP first came out. Not so different to what is being said now about Vista.
