[sm=coffee.gif]  So what are your favorites blends and how do you like to prepare coffee at home?  What other ingredient do you like to add?  And do you have a special cup at work and/or home that nobody else dares to touch?

I like dark coffees, and I tend to buy what is on sale (within reason, some cheaper coffees are horrible.).  I'm not a coffee snob, so I don't shell out extra money for supposedly better blends.  I drink coffee black, so no add-ins for me.  I make coffee in a press-pot aka French press.

I have been considering purchasing a French Press.  Do you recommend any particular models?

I have a Bodum, which is just a simple glass press.  I want to get an insulated one, because the coffee doesn't stay hot in the glass ones for very long.  I usually make the coffee then pour it into a thermos.  But that's kind of a pain in the rump.  I've been looking around for an insulated one, but so far I've been being cheap and not splurging.  You can also get a press cup, that makes one cup of coffee.  It's just basically a travel cup with a plunger on it.  It's convenient, and I have thought about getting one of those as well.

Thanks for the tips, I will look around for an insulated one.

Local chicago roasters. Intelligencia is my favorite local roaster. They have one called chocolate nutty mollasses. Its not flavored. Its just like wine in that they have their own character. they have the best coffee. Than Casteel Coffee from Evanston followed by seatles best and Caribou. I like Kona, Jamiacan blue mountain, Ethiopian sudamo, Kenyan. I like mine with milk, no sugar. By the way, I dont buy it. I get it for free from my ex. he works for a beverage company that fixes machines and sells beverages to cafes, restaurants , hotels and Institutions. Drip, percolate, french press. In a pinch I would even make it through a sock. I needs my coffee or I am this...[sm=gaah.gif] !

Edted to add: Duncan Donuts is good. But better priced and richer, is Macdonalds coffee. They make a good cup and there french roast is really good.

You get your coffee for free? How fabulous is that!

Yuban, made very strong in a Mr Coffee style machine.  Lots of sugar, lots of milk.  Nobody but me uses the Disneyland mug with Goofy on it.

The wife will pour what's left in the pot into ice-cube trays, and use it to make frappacinos.

Goofy?  Are you serious?  [:D]

The T-shirts and hats are Grumpy, Ven, if that helps.  It can be very hard to find a coffee cup of just the right size and weight.  This one is better than 10 years old.

We need more threads like this.

I have to say, I've never gone wrong with Millstone flavored coffee. Hell, I'm not even sure it is real coffee, I've had some mornings where I've used and maligned this stuff and it still tastes decent. A.k.a., semi-dirty coffeepot, or throwing it in the fridge and nuking it the next day if I make more than I drink--we're talking some really sadistic maneuvers that would usually turn coffee bitter and vengeful, and yet Millstone is still polite to my palate.

That said, there's nothing better than Green Mountain freshly ground with filtered water and a non-paper mesh filter. I've always wanted to try one of those 18kt gold filters, but I haven't quite reached that level of snobbery. I probably will someday.

I like tea, both hot and iced.  Hell, sweet tea is the Southern table wine.  I make a gallon of sweet tea every other day or so.  But I need coffee and cigarettes in the morning.

I was buying Costa Rica Terrazu and a Dominican (don't remember the region/estate) from John Martinez back in 93-94 when he had his roasting shop on Peachtree (2800 block) and I had my restaurant. I was ahead of the curve, as usual (my whole restaurant was Vanguard; a very risky place to be) (Got great reviews from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Zagat, and some local alternative rags)

I very rarely drink coffee these days, but when I do, my favorite is a Kona, Aikane Estate Peaberry, medium roast. I dislike French/dark roasts; they ruin the coffee. The extended high heat drives off the low molecular weight aromatics.

Same damn thing happened to wine. A 12% Bordeaux was just too subtle. The morons got ahold of wine and turned everything into an over-oaked 14% fruit-tannin bomb. The subtleties, the nuances, the delicacies of flavor, were lost.

Same thing is going on with Craft beers. It's all high-gravity, over-hopped, extreme ALL THE GODDAM SAME.

It's the Twens (20-somethings) and their "more is better" philosophy. It's not possible to explain subtlety to them. In all fairness, I was similar, except it was acid with me and some of my compatriots. We learned, by way of much excess, that more is seldom better.

I hope someone gets my point.

SACRILEGE! HERETIC!

Actually, I like tea too. It's not an either/or, they both have their place. But is not the winner. The economy of South America can attest to that.

Aneirin -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/3/2009 10:36:57 PM)

Oooo, I love coffee, and I actually think I am addicted to it for I can't go long without a cup of coffee. My favourite has just got to be Nescafe, one of the granuled instant coffees, a dark roast. The kind that after a few gulps you can actually feel the mind sharpen up, especially in the morning, like now, my first half pint in hand. What I put in it, is sugar, generally two heaped teas spoon fulls and a little milk, just enough to make the liquid dark brown.

On occaision I will drink pressed coffee, again dark roasts and I use a Bodum my friend gave me. In fact some know that is my best kind of alarm clock, want to wake me from my depths of slumber, just make fresh pressed coffee, the aroma the most kindest alarm.

Oh, btw, I got into coffee as a toddler, it became a pacifier to give me a beaker of milky coffee.

Tea, the great British drink, on occaision, then rarely and it has to be stewed hot and sweet.

I love coffee.....Philips invented this great machine for coffee pads which is popular here, called Senseo.Nice black dark roast coffee...and they even have chocolate and other nice tastes. The pads are made now by all ig brands overhere. So enough choice...but I prefer normal.

corysub -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/4/2009 2:41:51 AM)

Coffe is the only way I can get through a day.  Day to day I think old Maxwell House is great.  More expensive but really great tasting is the Whole Foods French decaf, PLU 392.  They roast the beans sometimes the same day you buy them and just grind them to the type of maker you use.  The entire car smells great on the way home as the beans make their journey to the coffeepot.

StrangerThan -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/4/2009 2:47:18 AM)

I have a Keurig coffee maker, which does one cup at a time. I used to grind my own, but lately have been buying Starbucks brand Sumatra extra bold at the grocery store.

Starbucks didn't do it to me. I used to drink Hiwaiian coffees, kona, maui, and grinding each cup got me used to drinking strong, flavorful coffee. When it comes to buying it now, most brands just can't produce the flavor I want unless I do grind it myself... and mostly I don't want to lol.

JustDarkness -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/4/2009 3:04:43 AM)

It sure does taste better when you grind it fresh. But I am to lazy also :P
