Labels that have negative connotations are never OK with me, and I realize that this is subjective as we all have our own opinions on what negative is. I didn't realize that "vanilla" was so negative until I read another thread regarding the "label" A label like vanilla as LB said, is simply a jargonistic term and that's how I see it. It's not a bad thing in my opinion.

Perv away, not a problem, and actually, yes, the stepping aside thing happens ... I'm not egotistical, but I am honest and that includes with myself, "casual dress" is hard to achieve if you look through my wardrobe, I have many friends and aquaintances who are understanding yet not "kink" people, the most confusion of onlookers or passers by comes from being in a regular pub with regular looking friends and the "swiped" glances become regular, my non kink friends find it really funny but in a sympathetic way I think.

I have brains too if that helps.

Seems to me, Pirate wasn't trying to challenge that unwritten common acceptance of the tern "vanilla" but to garner what the general consensus of what is considered vanilla and what isn't. We all know that the modern english language is constantly changing thus having a common acceptable definition will eliminate misinterpretations and such.

Sorry but I strongly disagree that every definition is subjective. That only applies in certain areas and not in all situations.

But we have to use some of them to communicate initially.
I use vanilla in two ways.
One to describe my husband in general terms. The fact that someone else may not describe him in that way is irrelevant.
I think a lot of confusion arises from the fact that sometimes we assume that people are interested in BDSM because of their sexuality. Whereas actually it maybe nothing to do with sexuality.
Two to describe any activity that could not be considered anything to do with Bondage Discipline SadoMasochism. Although if it involves an act of domination then some would consider it BDSM. I don't. Domination can be either vanilla or BDSM in my opinion. I don't consider all vanilla activities boring. I don't use it about sex. Whether sex is boring or not for me doesn't depend on what I do it depends on who it's with.
