I'm always a fan of using both uncalled for titles, such as Captain, Rear Admiral or Commandant and human names not nessesarily common for pets. Such as Steve, Bill,, John, Cindy or Sally. If you use a title though, it has to be with something pretty over the top. Such as Rear Admiral Cornelious Von Fuzzbutt.

Aw... Aileen, he is a real old timer.  It is a testimony to your love and care that he lived so long.  You have my condolences.

Thanks Vendaval and girly. Although it's not making me feel any better. I've been so weepy since I realized what was going on. Tomorrow will be a very hard day for me.

A timely thread...my 19 year old cat (the best fucking cat ever) is being put down tomorrow because he has extensive cancer of the mouth.
Fred is a great name.

I'm sorry to hear that Aileen.  My only pet is my Miss Kitters.  She's 13, and she's blind in one eye.  My little brother got her at a pet shop in Shreveport, LA.  They were giving away cats for free if you bought a litter box.  I came in posession of her when his apartment manager threatened to charge him and his girlfriend $500 for having a pet.  She's been with me since 1997.  She's is the weirdest cat I've ever seen.  Without prompting, she started using the toilet  (I shit you not.).  She refuses to drink out of bowls, so I have to turn the spicket on when she meows for water.  I just love that cat; she's my buddy.

*hugs Aileen*  I am so sorry....

Oh darn, I don't post pictures so did not realize it takes so long.

In a thread a while back someone mentioned that one of the ancestors for the Main Coons were the Norwegian Forest Cats.

I found a site that has some background information and lists of Norwegian names for male or female kitties.

"Norwegian Forest Cat - the skogkatt"

"Like a small but beautiful version of the lynx, the Norwegian Forest Cat is part of Norway's fauna. For many of us, it is the faerie cat we chance upon while out in the wilderness. Proud - yes, of course - and with a good deal in it that is still wild, yet not aggressive, and quite prepared to be affectionate.

Wegies, Norwegian Forest Cats, skaukatt - all names of that somewhat Maine Coon-like, medium-haired cat from Northern Europe. 'Skaukatt' is the Norwegian word for it, meaning literally Forest Cat. (Pronounce somewhat like scowcat but make the ow more like eow :-) It's not a wildcat, but a breed of the same species as all our domestic cats.

Actually, the official name is Norsk Skogkatt/Norwegian Forest Cat/Norwegische Waldkatze/Chat des Bois Norvegien."

You could post a picture of the cat on your profile.

True Ven, but it would take forever to approve it.  It's one of the reasons I don't change my photo regularly.

Motty pounces on me seconds before my alarm clock goes off every morning. He watches intently as I do any given chore, as if he is studying for a test. He loves TV and he follows my leashed dog and I on walks, barely beyond the dog's reach.

Strange cat.

Marc2b -> RE: Name for a cat...... (2/24/2009 8:13:45 PM)

I too had a main coon that was a stray.  He just showed up at my door one day and announced he was moving in.  They are a very intelligent, very affectionate breed and tend to be very playful (particularly the males).  I named mine Oliver after Oliver the orphan boy.

Aileen, I lost Oliver two years ago to liver cancer so I know how difficult tomorrow is going to be for you.  My deepest condolences and sympathies.

dcnovice -> RE: Name for a cat...... (2/24/2009 8:14:45 PM)

He looks almost like he's wearing a fur coat, so I keep thinking of Russian names: Ivan, Tsar (for his regal bearing), Nicholas or Nicky.

GimpinDenial -> RE: Name for a cat...... (2/24/2009 8:18:04 PM)

No problem
To me..... he looks...like a Samurai....or he reminds me of a Betta fish....
I don't know why...

Vendaval -> RE: Name for a cat...... (2/24/2009 8:18:21 PM)

Well he looks very regal, so perhaps a name of nobility such as Duke or Baron.
How about Fleming, since kitty looks very suave and debonair, like Sean Connery as James Bond.

Eh, I don't think they'd dig that name Greedy.  I see the wrestler when I hear that name.  I like Hemingway, but I imagine a lot of folks use that.  I was in Ocala about 2 months ago.  I wanted to see more of Florida.  I've only seen the northern part.  I'd love to get to Key West and see the Hemingway cats.
