I know when you go out  (dining in ) to eat, 15 % of the cost goes for the tip.
what about if you order to go, do you still need to tip, if so , what percent?
when every dollar matters these days, I felt really bad when my bowl of soup was $5.00 to go, and i only left a few cent as the tip.

Status: offline 		I do, it usually takes away from what a server is trying to do with their normal tables. So I tip.

Status: offline 		      15% is a baseline.  It can go up or down, depending on the level and quality of service.  If a waiter is bad enough, I will leave 3 pennies on the table.  If I'm picking up "to go" from a restaurant, I'll throw something in the jar, but at a lower rate.  5-10%, depending on how the bill easily rounds up.  My ice-tea didn't get refilled, the table didn't have to be wiped down, and they certainly aren'y going to call me at home to make sure everything was ok.

Status: offline 		We always leave at least 20% everytime.  It's just a personal thing.  I have worked as a waitress and it's a shitty and thankless job.  Service can't be excellent with every customer, every time.  Therefore, I came to the conclusion quite awhile ago that I don't tip based on performance.  I tip because I personally want to.  I want to give a hard working server a little something to add to their low wages.  Unless someone would absolutely and purposely give horrible service, we put that 20%+ down everytime.

At our favorite Chinese place that we go to at least once a week, our glasses are never below half full because they know how we tip.  It truly does pay off.  Not only does it guarantee good future service from servers who know you tip well but it makes us feel nice too. 

Personally, I feel you can never go wrong "over tipping."  Good karma and all that jazz.................luci

Status: offline 		I just tip around 25% regardless of whether its to go, or to stay, or delivery, or a cab. People in the service industry generally don't get paid well, and they rely on tips, so I feel gross if I don't tip well. Not only that, but I find that waiters/cab drivers/etc remember and are extra nice if you treat them well.

I was assuming it was a carry out from a non-pizza type place, those I don't tip at if I pick up a Dominos (not that I would.. yuck lol)

Status: offline 		I have tipped 20% for as long as I can remember. Sometimes more. It always irked me when I saw guys in a restaurant just having coffee for maybe $1.25. They sit there for an hour and leave maybe 20 cents. Me and my phone company buddies each left a buck each for our coffees.....

To go, no tip
 
Bad service: penny under the water glass

Status: offline 		I tip for service....If I set at a table and ask for a carryout I tip...But if Icall in and pick up at the register then I don't... No extra service was performed.

Status: offline 		I ALWAYS tip, usually too much, but both andi and I live on tips and so when people don't know what you go to to make sure thier to-go order is right, which is more than what is done to make sure your dining order is right, you would think people would get this.

At a BBQ place I used to work at which is a pretty well know chain with the name DAVE'S in it. The person who puts together your to-go order not only places the order with the cooks buts fights to get it to you quickly and hot, they also package the food and double check it against your order they also make sure you have plastic ware and all the things you need. in addition to that they also are friendly and smile when you stiff them. Just because you are not sitting in the restraunt doesn't mean you havent been served.

In addition to this they also usually do a lot of the things you take for granted at a restraunt. The usually Package the Silverware for the tables, they fill the salt and pepper, and usually clean the floors and tables and booths for you when the servers are busy.

The waitress who you give the big tip too does not need to help those who helped them out and usually they don't. However no matter hom many times I explain what To-Go order takes do no one seems to get it. The ONLY thing a To-Go person doesn't do for you is refill your drinks.

I Tip To-Go just as high as I do a Table Waiter...... As long as the order is right and Yes I am that guy who checks EVERYTHING before I pull out of the parking lot and will usually walk back in to give the Tip as I won't tip until I know it's right.

I have Tipped a Drive Through guy however. He thought I was strange.

To-Go is not Drive Through. Fast Food is designed to be sold to go, restraunt food is not takes more care and seriously the person who does it does a lot more for you than just take it out to you in a bag.

Status: offline 		The other thing to remember with tipping is if you are a repeat customer at a particular business the employees will remember you and the quality of service you get may change depending on how well you tip.

I don't agree with you there... they must be sure the order is correct... with all the utensils...and dispensed quickly... no different than a pick up at Denny's or Steak and Shake.
