being a former server myself, i only tip if i'm dining in and sometimes up to 20% if the service was great.

however don't expect a tip if service was bad which happened to me recently.

If I go into Zio's to pick up a bucket of ravioli and some cheese bread, I don't tip the guy at the counter.

If I order a $5 wrap/sub to be delivered to my office, I give the guy another $2.

If I stop at Arbys for a wrap and some curly fries, no one is getting a tip.

If I eat at a sitdown restaurant, it will not be some disgusting chain buffet, so I tip based upon the service I get. I've been known to give zero, and I've been known to give 30%. Most of the time it's around 20%.

I tip 20% as a rule whether it is dine in or take out. If the service wasn't all that great I might drop it to 15% but usually I just don't visit there anymore.

Has anyone gotten servers reminding them to tip, lately?

I have the past few times I go out with my friends, around my age. It's like they don't expect younger people to tip, I guess. The moment someone asks me to tip my percentage goes down 5% though, because I think it's really rude.

I only tip when I am happy or at least ok with the service. If I am annoyed for a variety of reasons, then don't expect to get a tip from me. Once in a while I have to use a black cab from the station and also it depends on the drive if I give a tip or not (if the driver got on my nerves or not...again is also depending on my mood of the day..well, not easy for them, but that's called life!) However, sometimes I get one which crawls incredibly slowly over the bumps in the road and then I know for sure not to give any tip as that is just to waste my time and increase his money as they get paid for time and for distance and then I say to myself "In this case he already enforced to get his tip from me with that way of how slowly he drove and I certainly don't support that.)

Not to forget, I am grown up with a dad who did run a DIY-Market store and he was always high on customer service and that left me kind of being observant and at times critical about it as well...as thats just the way how I was brought up...and at my current situation I certainly don't have money to waste into tips when they aren't deserved. simple

Exactly. Having a warm body around does not equate to good service.

I spent many many years living off tips, even made the down payment on my first house with saved tip money. I know good service. I don't reward bad service.

Never worked as a server I'm guessing.

The fact is that most people tip very poorly and younge people tip well below average. The server's income is virtually all tips so a table of 4 to 6 young people who have that no tip vibe can basically mean sub minimum wage for a night even if the server is excellent. So a verbal reminder that a tip is a good idea is a reasonable way to handle it. By tipping low you just force the restaurant to institute a required gratuity rule which everyone hates.

Young people DO (usually) tip well below the accepted norm sadly.... young people, and the occasional old man who'll flip a quarter at you and go tell you not to spend it all in one place.

A better way to handle crappy tippers is to leave one of those tip percentage cards with the bill though.

I tip generously, togo service, and eat in as well.

I don't see it as a non reward of bad service I see it as not understanding the amount of service you actually got.

I Tip To-Go, No I don't tip my usual amount but I try to tip from 2 to 5 dollars depending on how detailed the order was and how accurate it was when it was brought to me curb side.

When I eat in a restraunt there are far too many factors for poor service I determine the tip I leave on how often and for how long I saw the bottom of my Soda Glass and how long often the waitress scanned the table to see if we were in need. I get agrivated when a waitress will try to overcompensate for foor kitchen work by coming to the table 30 times to ask us if Everything is Okay. I also give extra tips for a waitress who sees I drink soda quickly and compensates by bringing a new glass before the other is finished.

As for To Go not being service I simply do not agree nore does the IRS as they Tax the tips you are SUPPOSED to have gotten and you are sudited if you delcare a substancial difference than what the average for your job should be.

Tipping is a Gratuity for service I agree but I guess I am wondering what you determine service to be in a restraunt setting, because in reality other than the refills and the clearing of empty plates and the ability to add something to your order later what does a waitress do that a curb side to-go server does not?

For when I receive delivery, as long as it's within the time given when I order it I'll tip 20% flat rate. If it's late by more than 5 minutes, 10%. By more than 10 minutes 5%. By any more than 15 minutes and I don't tip, period. If a driver calls me ahead of time to let me know he'll be later than estimated I'll tip 10% (even it it's 10 or more minutes late).

I just wanted to chime in on this part.  I've been the delivery girl.  It was a couple of decades back, so some of the above doesn't apply.  What I mean by that is I did it when not everyone had a cell phone and was able to make that call without stopping at a pay phone to tell you that the order would be late.

Don't think delivery drivers don't know that the above is exactly what their tips are based on.  It encourages some terrible driving habits, especially speeding in residential neighborhoods.  Nine times out of ten, if your food took longer to get to you when you ordered delivery than it should have, it didn't have much to do with the driver.  It had more to do with the fact that not enough drivers were scheduled for the time frame.

If your interested, some of the worst days of the year to deliver food.......

You'd be guessing wrong.

I trained as a server but wasn't ever allowed to be put on after the first month because I would regularly get 30% tips and people would request me at the door :P The other servers made the manager tell me that I could only work in the back because THEY wanted to actually get some tips.

I understand that most people my age tip low (or in some cases, not at all). It is NOT the server's place to tell me to tip him, that's just rude (and shows prejudice that I won't tip at all), regardless of this fact. The fact is, my friends and I unversally tip higher than normal... and someone who goes out to eat with me knows that they better tip at least 15% unless it's horrible service, or I will take their wallet and put the extra money on the table. Telling people 'hey, don't forget to give me extra money' is just as bad as someone not tipping, in my opinion.

@LadyPact
You're right, but that's why I'll still tip relatively normal rates when they call ahead of time. I probably should have mentioned that I take into account exactly how far away (and what streets) they have to go on. The one service that was litterally two blocks away that I would order from, I wouldn't accept anything less than 40 minutes. The one that's almost 3 miles? I will wait an hour and a half or so (especially because they have to either go on a highway, or a terrible road to get there). It all depends.

EDIT: Ok, including a number, but not a unit of measurement was silly XP

Do keep in mind that many restaurants have a mandatory gratuity figured into the final bill if you have a large group and ask about that before you make the reservations or decide to be seated all together.  Their definition might be 8 or more, 10, etc.  so be specific in your questions.

We always leave at least 20% everytime.  It's just a personal thing.  I have worked as a waitress and it's a shitty and thankless job.  Service can't be excellent with every customer, every time.  Therefore, I came to the conclusion quite awhile ago that I don't tip based on performance.  I tip because I personally want to.  I want to give a hard working server a little something to add to their low wages.  Unless someone would absolutely and purposely give horrible service, we put that 20%+ down everytime.

At our favorite Chinese place that we go to at least once a week, our glasses are never below half full because they know how we tip.  It truly does pay off.  Not only does it guarantee good future service from servers who know you tip well but it makes us feel nice too.

Personally, I feel you can never go wrong "over tipping."  Good karma and all that jazz.................luci

Luci, I think I love you :-) . I've never worked as a waitress, but I can imagine what it's like - especially when I see hurried, rude and obnoxious customers. Now, not every waiter/waitress is worthy of a stellar tip: but I make sure than when the service is stellar, the tip is too.

It's been a learning thing for me; in Europe, waiting staff get a flat salary, and the tip is just that: an extra. Here, it's pretty much what they make from their service, from what I understand. So even when they're not the best, they still brought my food/drink and what have you to my table... so they do deserve to be paid. Even if they suck: I shudder to think what I'd be like waiting tables  .

And servers are supposed to voluntarily report their tips for taxes.

Now as regards who on the staff shares in the tips that depends on the owner/manager.  Sometimes the bussers who clean the tables get a percentage and sometimes they do not.

THIS is popping up in the UK and the US... I wonder how the tipping is there?

Butch

ps...I'll bet the owners cook the books when it comes to tax time.

No idea, but I know this: I'd be very uncomfortable going to a restaurant where the management doesn't want to charge a set price for the food they put out. It's like art: the customer has to be ready to fork out for the pleasure. If it's all down to me, it means I have to do too much of the work... and what would be the point of that?

In England it's included in the bill... I kinda liked not having to think about it, while I was there.

FR:

I've waited tables.  One night, an asshole with 8 people in his party ran up a $300 tab.  The fucker left me a dollar in change.  I followed him out into the parking lot, and I gave him his dollar back.  I walked back in and quit.  You have no idea how much working in the service industry sucks until you do it.  I ALWAYS tip 20% to my waitress, bartender, and barber.  The kid that bags my groceries always gets a few bucks for his trouble.  Take out places, I always try to toss a few bucks in the jar.  The pizza guy always gets at least 20%.
