I like to tip for good service. I refuse to tip for bad service. I argue the line "some people make their living off of tips" with the thought "then they oughta provide exceptional service".. and if they don't, I'm under no obligation. I lived on the road, in hotels, etc, eating in restaraunts, and WORKING in the service industry, for nearly a decade.. I have very high standards, and a very low tolerance for bad service. I return to less than 10% of the places I go to. The places I do like.. have exceptional servers, who will often get in excess of 25%.  My record to date is a 100% tip.. for poor food... she'd earned it. I'd had an awful meal, she tried her best to make Me happy, but the cook was a loser.. the manager came over, at her request, and reluctantly admitted that the food was awful, and that I shouldn't pay.. But only after the server went to bat for Me. She earned it, so I handed her the total on the bill as a tip.
As far as take out, if I've made the phone call, driven over, and picked up the order, then unless something untoward has happened.... I pay the total on the bill. That's all. It cost Me enough to pick it up, no? There are extra delivery charges for delivery food.. unless it's super fast or something, I don't tip drivers. Do something extra to get something extra.
One way to guarantee no tip is to ask for it.... that's a hard limit with Me. If it's requested, it's an extra charge, not a gratuity.. ( which is left in "gratitude".. so I have to be grateful in the first place), and I despise extra charges that are surprises.

Daddy gets payed well,  well he does when the company isn't fucking with his schedual or joshing him along promising things that they're never going to deliver. Or at least I think the amount is decent. I could be wrong, since I don't work.

Working full time from 11 in the morning to 8 in the evening he makes about 600 dollars a pay check, and that's not including times he has to work over time and tips.

I just tip around 25% regardless of whether its to go, or to stay, or delivery, or a cab. People in the service industry generally don't get paid well, and they rely on tips, so I feel gross if I don't tip well. Not only that, but I find that waiters/cab drivers/etc remember and are extra nice if you treat them well.

One time a driver that worked at the company Daddy works for called up a customer and said hey you didn't tip me, why not. Man that is the WRONG thing to do, the customer called back very mad and complained to the manager, and the guy was not allowed to drive for the company anymore.

Has anyone gotten servers reminding them to tip, lately?

I have the past few times I go out with my friends, around my age. It's like they don't expect younger people to tip, I guess. The moment someone asks me to tip my percentage goes down 5% though, because I think it's really rude.

Going over speed bumps very fast is bad for the car and pretty damned jolting for the person sitting in side as well as the driver. While it's true they may be doing it for more money,  It's entirely possible they were trying to save some wear and tear on the car and those in the car who'd be jolted by speeding over the bumps.

quote:

ORIGINAL: PhoenixpowerHowever, sometimes I get one which crawls incredibly slowly over the bumps in the road and then I know for sure not to give any tip as that is just to waste my time and increase his money as they get paid for time and for distance and then I say to myself "In this case he already enforced to get his tip from me with that way of how slowly he drove and I certainly don't support that.)

Very interesting.  I am glad that the company fired that guy.  That is definitely the WRONG thing to do.

I've been told that the waiter doesn't get all of the tip if it's included on the charge card. I have tipped both ways by putting it on the bill charge and by paying the tip separately with cash. I always tip and the tip definitely corresponds to the service I've gotten. I always tip the pizza delivery guy, but I never considered tipping my to go order. Thanks for the education.

I guess its possible that some restaurant would deduct some part of the CC service charge from a tip included on the CC payment but I've never heard of it. What does happen is the restaurant does have a 100% accurate report on what you got as tips so they can use that total in calculating tax withholding which means servers cannot under report their tips to pay less in taxes which caused a lot of grumbling back when I waited tables.

If you've ever been a bartender or waited tables you know the answer to this question.  Giving feels good when you're supposed to...it feels infinitely better when it's not expected.

Hmmmm, I've worked the bar and waited on at tables. I only ever tip when and where the food and service is excellent.

when i worked at IHoP, a group of young adults are trying to figure out how much to tip me after racking up a $30 check (they ordered t-bone steak breakfasts). well one of them thought it would be cute to leave a dollar - not the green kind but a food stamp dollar. her smartass remark was "her momma might need it" ...i gave it back and told her "her mother needs it more than mine".

I've been known to leave a $10 tip for a $8 meal, simply because the service was deserving of it.  I've worked in restaurants for many many many many years, and know how servers get treated and don't get paid.  Your average waiter makes about $2.55/hr and the rest of their wages come from tips.  They also usually have to tip out to bussers, bartenders (where applicable), and sometimes, depending on the place, even the dishwashers (who should be paid a LOT more for their job).  Now, I don't know where you're from, but, I've never lived anywhere that $2.55 - $3/hr will cover living expenses like a roof and food.

I hate to tip on a percentage.  If the meals I order cost $30/plate, for 3 people, that's $90.  And if I go to the same place later and get 3@$12, that's only $36.  The server didn't do anything extra for the $90 meal.  They still brought 3 plates, drinks, etc.  If they deserve a $30 tip, they'll get a $30 tip.  If they deserve squat, that's what they'll get, and chances are damned good that I'll speak with the manager about it and won't be back.

Heh, I remember one restaurant we used to frequent, before we moved about 1500 miles away. Used to always request the same waitress, because she was awesome.  And she used to be happy to serve our table even if it wasn't in her section, usually because she'd walk away with at least $30 from us. ;)

Also, if you get excellent service from your waiter or waitress, don't be afraid to let the manager know.  They like to hear things like that, and it may just get your server a raise.  God knows they need it.

I may not think the food is that awesome at red lobster, or olive garden, but, I'll give it this, it's consistent, and it's far from bad.  I do still eat at them though, and have to say that I have NEVER had bad service at either, or any of the other restaurants under their parent company umbrella.  Which is the primary reason I eat there still.  Well, that and the cheddar bay biscuits at red lobster kick ass. ;)

Yup, this is exactly where it comes from.

It doesn't make much different to establishments where managers count tips (if the managers are doing that part of their job) but there were some friends of mine who worked at a Bob Evans that the owner didn't care... they usually under reported by about 70% of what they got >.> Not making a judgement or anything on them, but that IS what they'd do (and brag about doing).

i work at a restaurant thats national in size.  the servers make 3.50 an hour.  the to go makes 4.  minimum wage in my state is 7.  they take your order on the phone, make sure its correct, add anything that they may believe you need such as flatware or wet naps, gather your order together and bring it to your car when you pull up.  while they may not be running back and forth to your table, they do provide a service.  if you dont feel you should tip, go to mcdonalds.  they all make minimum or better there.

I honestly had no idea that those who handle my take-out at national-type restaurants aren't earning minimum wage.  I'll have to tip next time.

I tip at Dunkin' Donuts and places like that, putting my change in the tip cup they have out.  I figure they can use the 32 cents more than I need to toss it into my change cup in the car.

I was out with a large party last weekend at a local resturant which had changed management - a fact I was unaware of.  Oh my lord, the service was abysmal.  The only reason we didn't complain until after the food was served was for fear of retribution from the kitchen!  Fortunately, and surpringly, the tip wasn't included though it normally would have been for 12 diners, so we were able to undertip - I think we left like $10 or $15 on a $200 bill.  I couldn't just leave nothing, because even though she was awful, it was still her livelihood.  But sad for her, she could have had a $40 tip if she'd done a good job.

Smoking inside is problematic both for the workers and the other customers.  Now if a bunch of smokers want to own and operate a place where they can puff away and the workers and customers know that up front, I do not have a problem with it.

Since I have both asthma and allergies all my friends and family members know to smoke outside not in the house, same goes for the car.

I like him even better, making the place smoke-free.
Not to hijack but, that's where many of us will differ. They get kudos from the non-smokers and the smokers will likely take their business elsewhere. But I do agree that it should be the restaurant owners choice, not something that is mandated by law.

Can I come into your workplace and release poisonous gas that you have to breathe in?

One time at Denny's, I asked for a refill on my ice tea, and ended up waiting like 10 minutes and ended up asking 3 more times, and finally ended up going to the little kitchenette where the soda machines are, and saying "excuse me I have been asking for a refill for about 10 minutes now, and it's time for me to leave" and the restaurant wasn't even busy or anything, so there was no reason to make a customer track you down to finally get a drink refill.

One time at Black Angus you couldn't even get refills it took her like 30 minutes a pop to come to your table and the food took  about an hour and 30 minutes to come, but then I guess it being a steak house that may factor into it, but come on you shouldn't have to wait forever for an appetizer and a drink.

20 - 25% usually, if the service bites then I don't bother.

I've had a server who during the middle of our mea said it was time for her to clock out so made this big deal that we need to settle our bill. She got nothing.

It is extremely difficult when I go to Red Lobster to decide what to eat.  It's just all sooooooooo goood!!!!  One time it was really crowded.  I tried to go to the Sizzler but it was closed...So I went back to Red Lobster.  Anyways, the hostess was mad because I had left The Red Lobster and had not told her that I was going to the Sizzler. She made this big stink....And I was on a date...I was soooo embarassed! Because I wanted to really, really impress my date...And let's face facts here...Red Lobster aint cheap! but the hostess was giving us such an attitude. Anyways, we ate. I had  something deep fried and I think my date had something deep fried as well.  When we were done the hostess finally came over and apologized.  But I couldn't tip our waitress because the hostess had been such a cunt.  I love Red Lobster.
