You'll just have to come visit again when I DO get there :)

Thanks everyone! Keep 'em coming.

We've had such a fantastic response! We're looking forward to meeting as many as possible on this trip. As much fun as seeing the sights - meeting people and getting to hang out will be the memories that last a lifetime! We hope everyone will let us take pictures with them.

We've started a list of the answers to these two questions regarding Amsterdam and London.
One of the ways we've enjoyed the places we've visited in the past is to ask those who have been there as well as the locals two fill in the blank questions. We've started a list of the answers regarding Amsterdam and London. How would you answer?

Panda - You have email on the other side. If you really want to go, my guy can hook you up with a great deal. The problem with cruises is that going as a single costs one and a half time the regular rate. By sharing the cabin with someone you can get an inside cabin for as low as $1000 for the 12 day cruise.
  • If you go to (London/Amsterdam) whatever you do, do not miss... (fill in the blank)."
  • Something not as well know to tourists, off the beaten tail, but my favorite place to see, thing to do, in (London/Amsterdam) is ...(fill in the blank.)

PS - Panda, if there is a shuffleboard court on the ship we didn't find it the last time. Here's the link to the trip if you want to check it out : Holland American

Damn, Merc, I really envy you. Regardless of that, I hope you have a fantastic time!

I'm really curious though - are you really planning on moving out of the People's Republic of the United States permanently?

THANKS Sanity - I'm sure we will!

Won't hijack my own thread to go into the details, but yeah I'm completing the paperwork for Italian citizenship. What started as a lark or tangent when beth began doing my genealogy and ancestry search is now in process. Already 'qualified' now its just a matter of jumping through the hoops of Italian bureaucracy which will take about a year or so; however I found a lawyer who is handling it 'pragmatically' ($) and may get the job done quicker.

How are the Italian lessons going? Have you started yet? I'm wondering how that Rosetta Stone system works, because I was thinking of using it to learn German for my trip.

after 45 minutes on the phone with India, the installation finally took...however, it has been busy around here and haven't gotten around to the actual lessons!!! the intro explains that the method makes use of no direct translation into your native language, so that should be interesting!

Amsterdam is massively over-rated. It's a pretty enough city if you like canals and bikes, but the red light district is a total shit-hole inhabited by Africans with knives selling shite drugs.

Now Germany is another matter. Hamburg, Berlin and Cologne are fantastic cities. I'd try Bruges in Belguim, too.

No translation is the best way to learn a foreign language. When you go through translation, you don't learn to think in the new language, since you constantly need to refer back to your own language in order to understand. "No translation" is the only method that ensures the student reaches full comprehension in the foreign language.

thanks kittinsol.

this slave is fully aware of the no translation method.  she spent an entire week of the 4 months she lived a Lyon not hearing, seeing or speaking English...(the post was on strike for a week...so not even letters from home!)...and it helped her to get a grip on the language immensely.

being in total immersion where there was no outlet for an English speaker to hear/read/communicate throughout an entire week, was a TOTALLY different experience than the "selective" immersion, through the Rosetta software via computer.

which is why this slave said it will be "interesting".  to see if their concept of immersion via software program works.

I also think immersion is best. Besides, the motivation is greater when you need something to eat or drink, a place to sleep, directions or a blow job. Also, it's more fun.

Self-learning can work, if you're dedicated, but I'd still recommend you hired an Italian tutor to have conversations with; there's nothing like the real thing.

I highly advise keeping a small phrase book handy for those emergencies like trying to find a bathroom/toilet/water closet/loo or if needing medical attention or the police.

thanks for the recommendation, kittinsol, but no need to hire anyone.  Master's parents learned it at their parent's feet...and they are only 2 miles away.

thanks cjan.

this slave is still on the fence as to if it is just a clever marketing gimmick with Rosetta Stone.  immersion, as she experienced it before, was total....this method, when you step away from the computer after a half-hour or hour lesson, you are back to English being all around you again.

again...it will be interesting to see if it will work!

*snort*

I think one of the reasons I had so much trouble learning Dutch was that everyone  I was spending time with spoke fluent English.  And the language program I was using (I forget the name of it) tended to speak quickly, so my pronunciation/comprehension was impaired by that factor.  It wasnt Rosetta..

If you have the time while in Germany, I second NorthernGents suggestion of Cologne. (Might be because it is my hometown, and we tend to be proud to be Colognians )

Let me know if you need further information, or a guide.

If you need help with your arrival in London please let me know. I live very close to Central London and the Thames.

London is.. well .. the only limit is your imagination. I'd also recommend Oxford, Canterbury and Hampton Court.
