What is it about Ren Faires that attract so many people in the lifestyle? Personally, I can't see the attraction but I'd love to know why others do. Maybe they know something I don't (and should).

I think it has to do with fantasies of a different kind.  So often people talk of their sexual fantasies and role play in their profiles.  A Ren Faire is just that...role play and fantasy.

I'm not so sure of Ren Faires as I am the SCA.   (society for creative anachronisms - re-enactment of wars etc)

Several of the people my Lord knows are into the BDSM scene, or are looking for a way in!

Maybe it's all the wenching? lol, I am not sure - but my Lord is a gypsy pirate in the SCA and he makes chain-mail and does some wonderful rope work.  [:D]

Well, I like to dress up and have fun roaming around/interacting with similarly dressed people. Maybe there's just an overlap between that, and the lifestyle?

I curious how you can tell ppl at the ren fest are into bdsm?  I ve been to one and had no clue to anyone sexual preference.  Other than mine and I wasn't to positive about that.

I am going by the amount of people, women really, who have it as a love or like in their profile. I don't think there is any other way of knowing, unless they tell you.

At least in part, it may be the acceptance of feudal relationships -- the concept of the Lord and Master, the Lady of the House, and a collection of servants for every need -- the embracing of a culture of nobility and serfs, and of a ruling class and serving class.

Add to that the acceptance among faire folk of exotic 'entertainment' like belly dancers, tattoo and body modification, and the theatrical aspects and it is a natural fit for authority-structure oriented individuals.

BDSM, Ren Faires, comic cons, Star Trek conventions...all the same people.  We have bought corsets from folks at the faire in the afternoon, then hung with them at a fetish party that night.

While the UK doesn't really have Ren Faires as such, I've found the same with the LARP crowd.

I'm not sure why, but it's not just BDSMers, but 'alternative' lifestylers generally that seem to be overepresented.

There's definitely a higher percentage of pagans,poly people, goths etc. in LARP then you'd find in mainstream society.

You're right.  There are tons of SCA people who are members of the dungeon in DC.  I had never heard of SCA until I was into BDSM.  I am still amazed at how many people are involved in both.  The numbers in this area seem almost staggering.

Me and mine go every year, they are fun and we can dress up. They do sell some kinky leather stuff at the ren faires, I bought a really nice set of fleece lined restraints and a collar there.

I did (worked) the California and Vegas Renn Faires for over a decade, and can tell you that they are full of kinky folks as well as many others into "alternative" lifestyles. It makes sense really; costumes, leather, floggers, cuffs, stocks, roleplaying, and all night after hours parties! What's not to love if you're kinky? Not to mention that the folks there are often more accepting of wiiwd and other things than the general public usually is. The Faires I've worked also have many gay and bi performers and workers, who enjoy being able to show affection to their partners in public without being castigated by some holier than thou ninny.

     The Rennaisance period was a time of Kings and Queens ,  nobles and commoners ,  servants and lowly beggars .   Grand ceremony , and dramatic public occasions that could be joyous or lethal . 
   
    Usually attending my local one annually , I've found it to be the one place ,  besides Bdsm venues ,  that one can openly berate a servant ( sub/slave ),  lead one on a leash , and wear handcuffs dangling from one's belt, while carrying whips and floggers  .   One may also  purchase fine floggers , restraints , and other delightful leathers, and unusual jewelry and accessories - all in front of families and assorted others , without so much as raising an eyebrow . 
     The period costumes are often flamboyant ,  lend themselves easily to Bdsm pleasures , and have great esthetic appeal to many .   Good fun can be had by all !            Huzzah !

So you have a place where women want you to call them wenches, there are pricesses who secretly want to be abducted and defiled, you can buy Floggers and use them in front of every day people, you get to call yourself Lord Figgly Fuck III and some people actuallt care, and if you are exceptionally pompus you can get drunk on Mead and Molest the Guild Secretary (There is a Propert Term yes I know but I don't remember what it was) and wind up with an actual title, or having food trown at you in a Stockade.....

What about this WOULDN'T attract the like of many BDSM'ers?

Oh and I almost forgot, if you ever read a Bodice Ripper Romance Novel you would understand why so many women are into it.

Or cuffs carried the same way. Others that are a good bet are: any woman in a bodice with a strawberry between her tits, anyone with a foxtail attached to their belt so it hangs over their butt, and folks wearing nothing but body paint, pasties, and a fig leaf. [:D]

FYI,
 
The latest set of promoters at our local faire here decided to "clean up" the faire, no more floggers out or handcuffs or slaves on a lead.  And they even made the belly dancers cover their middle sections
 
As a result, attendance is down for vendors, performers and the audience.
Fewer people = less money.

That's a shame, Vendaval. SLO used to be a kickass Faire that I worked many times. I wonder what the rules for after hours are there now. If they are as draconian, they will lose even more of their performers.
