I liked the Vegas Faire... I was there once..in 2001, I think? Maybe 02...(jeez it sucks losing memory...)  There was a guy that had a dragon... very cool :)

and the Germans from Southern Faire were there

I liked the Germans.. they were FUN!!  There was one guy... really tall.. and a shorter guy (about 5'6ish?) with the most vivid blue eyes...  they tended to wander away from the guild more often than the others... they were fun to flirt with...

I have looked, thought possibly to get back into the dressing up like a plum thing and whacking people with lumps of steel, but I keep getting memories of the authenticity bullshit of the past, it went too far I think. A situation where if you tried a new idea, you had to have the evidence to back it up, the reading literature in car trunks and a logical argument based upon that literature, or it was, ''get it off !'' Even one of our group's favourite word was ''authentic'', until she got told I had an authentic arse and she can kiss it, kiss it or shut up.

Where I live, it is medieval, the city is, Drake, Hawkyns and Frobisher lived here, they sailed from here, but find the historical groups, that is a task in itself. There is a pirate lot, I am thinking about, they seem to have fun what with the tankards of ale, corsets and gothy types.

But with the authenticity, I think it is the fringe types that become the worst exponents of it, maybe they think knowledge is acceptance.

I agree with red, here in our area (md, va and dc) there are ALOT of people in the lifestyle that frequent the renn fest... I like to go because it's the one time of the year you can wear your fetish gear in public, during the day, without nilla's gawking :) Also, they always have great things for sale, whips, chain mail, corsets, kilts, handcuffs, the list just goes on and on... umm, now you all get me wanting fall to hurry up...lol!

Can’t ever say I visited a Ren Fair when I’ve stayed in the USA, however I have attended many SCA outings and here in Aussie we have medieval fairs which is roughly the same I imagine roughly from 1066 to late Elizabethan period. Not sure if such activities do attract members of kink and BDSM or if it is as much the reverse and Medievalists or a good number of them are attracted to the world of kink. Could be something to do with living alternative lifestyles.

At the Medieval Fair held in the city of Brisbane we also have other reinactors such as a Colonial Rifle Brigade  which was our defense in the Colonial period and a company of Confederates

Personally, I like getting the chance to see so many deliciously ripe women in corsets, and all the hot men in leathers and tights.  I get all sorts of wonderful eye candy and silly fantasies at these things.  Men with beautiful long hair are particularly drool-worthy, and what's hotter than dominating an authentic maiden-in-distress with her bosom spilling out of her peasant top?  Or a man in full arms and armor falling to his knees before me?

Statistically speaking, it probably boils down to the fact that people into bdsm tend to be slightly more imaginative than the average person?  It might be that the "imagination muscles" tend to get exercised a bit more when you have d/s or s/m needs early in life and don't have access to a bdsm community.

Totally a guess though, no real evidence.

Mmmm, corsets.

There is the whole voyeur/exhibitionist aspect too.  How many places can you parade around and do such things in public?  And for the types that crave public humiliation there's nothing like the stocks, being chained to a tree or dunked in the water barrel.

Ren Faires , SCA, Star Trek, Gor....Tis best if you decide to venture into this thang that you lack a grasp on reality.  It is a rather essential component to allow yourself to really have a grand ol' time.

Talking to someone the other day about the Faires, they told me if I show up they are going to put a coin in my mead. They went on to say that the act was ment to "draft" me into battle.

I figured out that if that is true, I need to keep my mead covered at all times... Is there any other little bits I should keep my eye open for?

Hello Sir,

Well for one, when you go there and for men, you see a lot of women walking around in tight corsets, and for women... there are men dressed looking very dashing and masterly carrying swords and whips. Some people dress as pirates and lead wenches around bound by ropes. There are usually stores there selling various leather goods, including whips, paddles, and clothing. Stores selling knives, swords etc. And stores selling corsets and belly dance attire. So all in all, I think it is a place where if you're in the lifestyle, you can blend in pretty well and get to be a little "out" about what you are without it being too noticeable, as well as picking up some useful things at the stores.

there's definitely a crossover....!
We're armour makers over her and we know lots of people within the UK reenactment scene -Here, I think the 'public' parts of reenactments are less out and out kinkified, but the evenings in the beer tents can be heaving with latent and not-so-latent kinksters  [:)]

There's also a huge crossover between BDSM/ren and biker-types too... it's just something about people who are comfortable to reside outside the norms and go with what makes them feel good rather than with what makes them least conspicuous.

M says he attends for the mead, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the corsets might have something to do with his enthusiasm..!

So, Like hey.. last year I had a girlfriend that making a victorian gown for me. but she never finished it. Now my current girlfriend I'm sure isn't interested in SCA but If I do one day manage to get a victorian wardrobe together and my GF were to dress male like. (she's a butch lesbian) we could would have a good time? I'm slowly getting her interested in tying me up too. I had the same questions about SCA like the OP asked. great thread!
