Ren Faires are a wonderful place to hang out or work with. You can make lots of double entrendre comments that just make it fun. I personally work the MN Ren Fest and I can't tell you the number of times I've watched people handle leather goods (or other goods) and be about 85% certain they were into some form of BDSM. One thing that is funny with this fest is that "management" does has issues with the bawdy/exotic/erotic side of the fest. * Floggers = Flyswatters * Last year, someone had a fit about some goblets celebrating the "elements", never mind that they have been showing them off for umpteen years...I rememeber seeing them in 94-95 and no one had an issue. The MN fest is trying to be known as a "family show" and tries to be PC to everyone. Personally I think the "Puritan" influence is making it miserable and hard to work with. One major highlight is "Vilification Tennis" - It's always held at 12 at the "bare" stage. It's used to be "Bear" until the carving fell to the MN weather. If no glass bottom tankard is available, maybe I can get a empty tankard and pour the drink into it. I'd hate to have to live the line from Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail... I'm not dead yet!

The Evil Overlords used to tell us during Workshop Weekend, "Remember, this is a family show.... black scowl of death... That means entertaining them, NOT making them, you guys!" Yeah, that worked.... ok, it really didn't [:D], but most of us learned early on to be vewwy quiet when performing "potentially family making" activities in tents during Faire hours [;)] Speaking of Puritans, anyone dressed as one is most likely of the kink persuasion. Most of 'em will spank you with a Bible, given any excuse, and many of them carry their own paddles for "punishing the sinners", lol.

I loved the Puritans at Southern.... :) ETA: This is final weekend at the local Faire here (I think), so I'm garbing up and heading over tomorrow... It's not the BEST Faire I've ever attended, but it's the only local one.... and I'm semi-known there... Ihave a friend with a jewelry booth, and friends at a leather booth (big surprise there, huh?).. and of course my favorite tavern/tavern wenches!!

Dont post here much , but this topic caught my attention.... For me.. all about the stocks and pillories... one day I'd love to erm "perform" at a renfaire and spend a whole day in the stocks as punishment allowing all and sundry to throw fruit n veg at me... For those into tickle torture youtube search for canelli :)

To me an Inquisition reenactment would be more interesting, but if ren fairs are your thing, go for it. (I don't tell others what to do if they don't tell me what to do ... unless, of course, one of us is tied.)

That might be neat, but at a Faire the only thing that could be done is like a burning at the stake or a hanging. Pretty scary for any children who are there. The real fun of the Inquisition (they always ignored this in Catholic school) was done in secret...in dungeons, chained, nude, screaming like Natalie Portman....excuse me while i leave the room to change my panties. For those into tickle torture youtube search for canelli :) i have only done Ren faire a couple of times, but at the first one, some time ago, there was a stocks set-up for two persons - two girls were in them having the bare soles of their feet licked by a goat. Actually it piqued my interest, and they asked for more volunteers but i am too shy for public humiliation. It probably would have been fun though. Oh well, another opportunity missed.

My theory: both involve adults who are not afraid to play. A lot of adults I know, once they "grow up," seem to think such things are childish. With sex, in particular, it's something SERIOUS and role-playing and such are just not allowed. If that's true, it may explain why I stil haven't let myself grow up.... Incidentally, if any Ladies attending a southern California Faire need a loyal maidservant to carry and fetch for them there, I know one named Gwendolyn who might suit you. She's not overly bright and her attention does tend to wander, but once you make it very clear who's in charge, she can be very obedient and attentive. Strangely, she looks a lot like me. :)

RenFaires and SCA are two separate things. Essentially in the SCA you are performing for your fellow performers, not the public in general. You find a lot of very geeky specializations; I am learning High Medieval French so as to better understand a source document on cooking. And while I care very much about the proper translation of "hachez", I don't care about whether or not Lady Thusandsuch has got a thoroughly modern knee brace on under her skirt, and I accept that if the younger generation present are growing out of their shoes every three months keeping them in proper period shoes may not be possible. Everyone has a minimum desired level of authenticity (which is pretty damned minimum) and individuals then take their own performance as deep as they want to go. Has nothing to do with anyone else...unless you stare at Lady SoandSo's embroidered coif and say "ooooh WANT!" (laugh)
