Well Mike, he still broke a promise.....didn't he?  The tax is to pay for kid's health insurance;  having kids is voluntary.  I chose not to have any.  Why should I fund their insurance?  Obama and his pals are giving away billions and billions to rich, corrupt assholes.  They couldn't use a small percentage of that money to fund health insurance?  You give an inch to these assholes, they will take a mile.  You seem to be okay with the government regularly fucking everyone in the ass.

Cigarettes don't cost enough, you say?

The current deficit is what, a few hundred billion, maybe a trillion, right?

Here's a good bit of very simple math.

20% of America, roughly, smokes.
At an even 300 million, that would be 60 million, right?

$1.01 tax hike per pack.  $60,600,000.  Assume half of that 20% smokes 1 pack a day.  $30,300,000.

30,300,000 times 365 equals 11,059,500,000

That is 11 billion dollars.  now if all of them are 1 pack a day, that doubles to 22.1 billion dollars.  That's not exactly chump change, even in today's world.

How many states rely heavily on the tobacco industry?  Not just the sales tax each state rakes in, but the actual industry.  North Carolina's state revenue is over half funded by tobacco.  An entire state would go bankrupt.  Now THAT is a federal buy out program.

So, kitten, if everyone quits, which I assume you are all in favor of, you willing to fork over the extra cash to cover that fairly large chunk of change?  No matter how you look at it, smokers will still get the shaft, but at least we will get the true joy of watching all of you whiny, self absorbed bastages take it just as deeply.

I mean, honestly, once tobacco is gone, and the feds already know that pissing with our alcohol is not a wise idea, what's left?  Food stuffs, clothing, GASOLINE, commodities and the EVER popular PROPERTY tax.

Just remember to grin when it's your turn to bend over, because us smokers will sure be grinning when you have the same perspective we do. LOL

Did I mention addiction? Did you address any of the questions I asked? Is ADHD a real affliction?

Now to address your inaccuracies.

1) It is addictive, the studies and research are there and support this. You can refuse to believe it, just like people refuse to believe that man actually made it to the moon.

2) Addictions can be overcome, it happens all the time. It takes more than willpower alone, and if you knew anything about addictions you would know it is a battle against your own mind.

3) As far as the boot camps, many convicts are smokers and go into no smoking facilities for onths to years, and on the day they are released they light up.

Now as to the tax, would you care to address any of the questions, or are you just posting to bait and flame?

As much as I would enjoy watching river rafters crack their heads open on a rock and drown, or other faux daredevils plummet to the earth after the bungee cord snaps.  Maybe we should tax moronic, extreme sports......how many of them have to be saved by park rangers every year?  Fake tough guys really have all the answers to our societal ills.  [8|]

Get over yourself. If you didn't get the facetious tone I'd say you're the one who needs to pay better attention.

As to the addiction aspect of the post - I stand by it completely. I was surrounded by smokers in the bar business for over ten years, and every single smoker I've known on personal level who's quit successfully, has walked away straight up cold turkey. I don't buy the  '' I'm addicted...can't quit crap for second '' It's a load of crap. Period.

To the taxes...  I'm on record in similar threads, not supporting them. But like I said, if one thing has to go, it might as well be smoking. And you answered your own question - The sugary foods/junk food is surely next. That's the kind misrepresentation you get when you're constantly tricked into electing the same type of politicians over and over.

As to the negative comments regarding one of my favorite sports.....Every athlete /participant I'm connected with is not only super ambitious, but also highly competent.

You oughta seriously give it a second look....It would truly do wonders for someone with a frail, decrepit physical structure. I bet you'd lose those Winstons instantly after your first time out.[;)]

Is frail and decrepit middle-aged, mid-life crisis, glory days are long behind you, jock code word for not being chubby and overcompensating?  I'll pass on riding in a rubber boat with 40 year old men that still use the word, "Homie."  Not my thing, I'll stick to my Winstons, whiskey, and general debauchery.

So now, addiction means you can quit any time you want to? You think you can change the definitions of words at will?

And so far as personal responsibility goes, if this is about "personal responsibility" why is it up to the government to enact sin taxes "for our own good". That's the exact opposite of personal responsibility! That kind of logic taken to the extreme would call for government dictating how we behave in every aspect of our lives in the name of "personal responsibility". Wouldn't it?

No sanity,I don't think addiction means one can quit any old time....what it does mean though is the addict can use any help he can get.If it is a higher "sin" tax,than so be it.Now once again I will admit to being a smoker,therefore directly impacted by this tax...and I don't have a problem with it.Tax the damm things out of existence ,we would all be better off.
As for the worries of what comes after for states like N.C.and tobacco farmers....well nature and business abhor a vacuum...I would imagine new industries would replace old...new healthier crops would replace old ruinous crops.
Now excuse me while I go put on a nicotine patch.

Before the testosterone levels totally clog the place up, I'm puttin' in my two cents:

There was a $1/pack cigarette tax instituted in Maryland in 2008 pointed at funding medical programs for children. My reaction to the news was "somebody didnt think that through very well." 

I'm unable to find a solid business model in creating funding for programs that will inevitably expand with a tax revenue that will, for any number of reasons, almost assuredly contract.  A 25% drop in revenue across the state would reduce funding by 25% to programs that would still require 100% funding to operate.
 
Stable funding for ANY program is bedrocked in consistent sources. To that end, municipalities across America are discovering a predictable revenue stream in noise   www.noisefree.org/newsroom/nfainthenews.php
 
The choices are
1) a smoker who quits (or take their business out of state) tomorrow, thereby removing the revenue or;
2) a hard-headed person that never learns that not EVERYone wants to hear his/her music
