The elderly are skipping meals..

Pensioners are skipping meals to save money on food during the recession, a shocking survey has found.

A poll of 1,200 people aged over 60 showed one in five misses a meal while two-fifths are struggling to afford essential items and are cutting back on electricity and gas and socialising.

Older people are not confident the Government will help them deal with the current recession and many are going to extreme measures to cope, putting their health at risk, Age Concern and Help the Aged said.

The newly-merged charity warned that many elderly people, particularly the poorest pensioners, are among the worst hit by high prices.

Those on low incomes face a far higher than average inflation rate and struggle to afford basic household essential items such as food and electricity, the report said.

I remember during the 70's there were all sorts of stories about the elderly being reduced to eating cat food in order to survive on their meager savings.

It must warm the cockles of their hearts in the U.S. to see their congress and senate vote for $34.6 B in "foreign aid."

The elderly have already experienced recession/depression in there lifetime, and it is sad that they are not more compensated for what they have contributed during their "active" years.
At this time, the only help that we could give would be to individually "adopt" an elderly person that maybe we know, and do such things as make extra for dinner and turf it to them,  or share a cup of coffee with them and encourage them to reminisce.
I personally have done that, and it means more to me, than it does to them.

I remember those stories too. It never made any sense to me. Cat food is not cheap.

Actually I remember it as dog food.  There is an un-named brand that you can get for about thrity five cents... beats fifty to ninety cents for funny round spaghetti.

We are better off supplying crock pots and beans and veggies.  They often don't have the strength to cook and will open the easiest thing they can.  I knew of one person a few years ago, saying he had gotten used to the taste of dog food.  He was serious.

About 1/3 of the country is obese, and another 1/3 is overweight. Maybe this will be a good thing for 2/3 of the elderly.

I saw a news program last night.  The poor could not afford healthier foods and were gaining weight because of it.  The AARP and Walgreen's have a medical RV that is visiting 48 states to do certain medical checks to try to address some of the medical problems people are not seeking help with because they cannot afford this assistance.

Typically the poor go with starchy foods because they are cheaper.  Starchy foods will have you craving more as it turns to sugar and the sugar energy passes quickly.  It is a well documented fact that the elderly crave sugar.

servantforuse (sorry slaveboy)... I hope you never get old.  Some are not overweight becasue of over eating.  There are medical problems, poverty and the body shutting down and not burning off as much fat.  It could happen to you too.  Besides that, not eating is not a way to deal with the overweight crisis.  While some are ignorantly contributing to their weight problems or knowingly doing so... some are not.  These people need good food and to be able to afford it before you judge them all by the fast food... over eating group.

I would be interested in knowing what news program you heard this on. I would bet a couple of cocktails that it is a 'left leaning' source. Don't believe everything you hear.

There are various charities that help out with elderly people who have trouble making ends meet. Meals on Wheels is a big one around here.

Left learning source?  You must be joking!  I was saying that is ignorance... but ignorance doesn't mean what I meant.  You chose to ignore what doesn't fall in line with what you believe, which is it would do people well to be without food to deal with a weight crisis in this nation.  That would lead to mulitple medical issues and cost the tax payer far more than providing decent food... which would be the decent thing to do.

The elderly cannot work most of the time.  When you have spent as much time with the elderly as I have.. come back at me.  Until then... do your own research.

Cat food is not cheap.

Totally agree...my 3.5 little tigers are costing me a fortune food wise...

in regards to that article, what shocks me more is the lack of cooking skills, at least how they appear on tv...and how I experience them at my work places in some residential homes...

when I see sometimes those crap shows (well, there is not really much alternative on the normal programm here where by now I prefer often dvd's as I have no interest to pay more for more crap on tv via sky & co) where Jamie Oliver tries to teach adults to cook basic meals in rotherham...then I am asking what are people learning over here cooking wise???

And I regularly go banana when I see how some staff regularly buy crap ready meals with the residents instead of getting their arse up and do proper cooking with them.

When people rely so much on ready meals, then I am not surprised that they struggle with their bills. Don't get me wrong, I did hear about that food prices did go up again, but I can live for a week on some chicken and a cauliflower and a broccoli and some carrots and some peas if I want to...(with some cereal in the morning and sandwiches in the evening).

But when I see how people rely so much more on ready meals over here (at least the ones I know) then I am used to I am not surprised to see they struggle with their costs...I simply think you can stretch your food quite well, when you know how to cook properly from scratch, so that it does not affect it as heavily as the ones who are less able to cook properly.

(sorry for being so blunt about that but I had quite a few temper tantrums already when I see how easily staff feed our disabled clients with crap ready meals and shows like jamie oliver who teaches rotherham to cook just confirms the lack of basic cooking skills to my experience over here so far...which of course does not mean that there are people who can do cook very well...no offense intended...)

I guess not to many have a sense of humor on these boards. I did say earlier ( when asked ) if I was joking about the obese. I admitted that I was..

I did not see that you admitted to joking.  I cannot see light colors so did not see the question until I moved closer to the monitor.  But still... I am commenting on the left learning source and not believing everything you hear. My comments on that remain.

I have a great deal of humor... but I do not find anything humorous about left this and right that and health issues, the elderly issues and hunger, nor addressing them with improper methods.  So we got the two mixed all up.  Your joke.. my humorless in this area of joking, my not seeing correctly because of age, disease and my attitude and your left learning source comment... leading to my own comments.

If I may ask, was it a left leaning source.? Maybe the BBC or our own PBS. It does make a big difference on the spin put on some of these stories..

Rofl laughing at the BBC being a 'left-leaning source'. You're full of humour today.

I was flipping channels and it was either msn or cnbc.  I am sure that walgreen's or the AARP could give more information.  The information on the program lined up with what I have seen and learned through many sources.

As to dietary information... it is everywhere.  Poor people eat a lot of starch which turns to sugar and fat.  The elderly crave sugar and if they do not have the money for food or the energy to cook the better cheaper foods like beans, they will go to the easier, cheaper foods that don't require cooking and mulitple shopping trips to get fresh foods, etc.  They will gain weight from diet and health concerns.
