bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/27/2006 7:52:02 PM)

a yarmulke is a beanie worn by Jewish men...in some of the more "religious" sects, they wear them all the time...most of the conservative sects, they only wear them at temple or during a ceremony

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/27/2006 7:53:21 PM)

next word

dacryops

mathiasdomm -> RE: Word Fight (4/27/2006 7:53:59 PM)

Yiddish for the Hebrew "kiddish" i believe.  Regardless, the Jewish skull cap.

oops, lagg in the screen--i'll wait

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/27/2006 11:19:29 PM)

Orotund means fustian.  I'll leave dacryops for someone else.  (It must have something to do with tears, but I don't know what it means.)

Edited to add: Anyone have a reference for the claim that Shakespeare's vocabulary is 2.5 times the size of OED?  I don't think that can be true.  I own a complete concordance to Shakespeare, and it's not nearly as large as OED.  Also, anything that's in Shakespeare (including clauses ending with prepositions) is English in my book.

I don't have an actual reference for online that could prove or disprove the claim. However, I do know that it can not be as large as OED. I have an up to date reference guide to Shakespearean/Elizabethan vocabulary, and though it is large, it is no where near as large as the OED. (  I also own a complete Etymology reference guide, also up to date. And by up to date, I mean 2005-2006)

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 6:08:33 AM)

If the word computer is in the OED that would dismiss the claim of 2.5 x out of hand for me by simple inferrence. Although Billy could lay down some rap, for sure.

Not quite. It actually refers to anything that pertains to a priest or the priesthood.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 7:17:17 AM)

LOL want a hint?

I am a Mzungu.
You are a Mzungu.
Mathiasdomm is also a Mzungu.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 12:39:46 PM)

Mathiasdomm is a man, so that leaves out woman.  He's dom so that leaves out sub.  Game player?

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 12:42:10 PM)

LOL...just looked it up...now a better hint would have been "and Foot Queen is not."  Course that may have made it too easy.  Still your turn.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 2:29:25 PM)

I'll give it a bit and see if LAM can get it or not lol.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 4:59:16 PM)

Nope, don't know it and had to look it up.  I was about to complain that we were supposed to be sticking to English words, but it's in OED.  I'm a mzungu too.

I guess you go again, Tikkiee.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 5:01:49 PM)

I'm sure we can put this one to rest.  I doubt very strongly that there is ANY word in Shakespeare that's not in OED.  But of course there are plenty of words in OED not attested in Shakespeare.

Dover has a nice two-volume paperback concordance to Shakespeare; it's really not all that expensive.  When I get back home I'll post the publication details.

I thought you might be able to get it from my hint.  Of course, I knew what it was by that time, so maybe that's why I thought it was such a good hint.  Please do post...I'd be very interested in it.  Thanks

mathiasdomm -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 5:16:05 PM)

I had to look up mzungu too.  Looks like she wins.  And I am a mzungu.  Rumor confirmed ;-)
