I keep seeing at meetings and in the pics on the site black t-shirts and other attire for dom(mes). Does it have some special significance or something?

I've alway worn black from being a teenager and waaaaaaaay before it was cool. It's not a domliness thing, it's just chich and elegant (and makes you look thinner, teehee).

ps,. I was a punk with the leather and the chains and the safety pins too, and that never leaves you. And yes, I am that old.

A lot of people post pics when they are dressed in things that would be considered appropriate dungeon attire.  For females, this is a little more liberal than for males, unless they into leather or fetish wear.  That leaves basic black.

As to why you tend to see the same thing at meetings, I can tell you why I do it.  Most groups will hold their meet and greets in vanilla locations and ask you to leave the fetish wear at home.  This is all well and good, but how is the new person coming along for the first time going to spot the people they are going to meet?  If they walk in and see a number of folks wearing black, they have a hint that they've found the group.

We usually put black and blue balloons around our area so there's never a mistake. Can you imagine going somewhere and there are a whole bunch of people dressed in black and it turns out they just stopped in for coffee after the funeral of Father O'Leary!

Bita, I actually thought about that after I typed it up.  Can you just imagine?  Working up that courage to go to a first munch and then finding yourself crashing a group who had just come from a funeral?

The balloons are a pretty good idea, btw.

To turn the question round on the OP for a second: when going on first impressions, or looks alone, could you take a Dom/me seriously in sweatpants and grubby t-shirt?

Actually the first time I met my first Mistress she was wearing jeans and a red Pooh Disney tshirt and I had no problem taking her seriously at all.

Because they think it makes them look all tough and badass. (running off to see what my profile photos have.......)

Seriously I have always worn a lot of black. Especially when I worked in a formal office environment. Now, not so much so unless I am getting dressed up to go out. If you look in my closet and dresser drawers you will find the rainbow (exception being that I do not care for many pastels, though there is some pink in there) especially lots of greens and yummy brown colours.

I think people, especially guys, are afraid of colour. I love it and it shows, in my home and my closet.

Because:
a) everyone looks good in black leather
b) most of the time, its all that is on the rack come shopping time

Yep.. When I go shopping for something to wear out, almost invariably it comes only in black, or black with minor hints of other colors (usually purple, red or blue).
Since I do not have the wherewithal to have custom stuff done, and I have to consider footwear that will go with what I choose to wear.. black wins by default.
I'd much prefer to expand my color choices..  ideally, I'd have hunter green with black accents...

As a Dominant who is also a vegetarian, I have the double whammy... Not only limited by my choice of colour, but also by my choice of materials.

When people dress up it is often in black.  For instance the "basic black dress".  Most tuxedos come in black.  There is "black tie" for special events.  Business suits are often black.  Goth uses a lot of black.

i think the main reason is that black is just a fantastic (non) color that looks good on a lot of folks, doesn't clash with what anyone else is wearing and does not draw my attention away from the "business" at hand.

Back when the LA social would be 200 people...

Master and his group of friends decided they were tired of seeing everyone in black. (We used to joke, "I'll be at the social. I'll be the one in black.") The guys started showing up in Hawaiian shirts.
