Really, women should not give birth at all, let alone stay at home with their brood. How criminal of them to release a helpless creature into the world! How selfish we are. Loki is right: we should become permanent incubators, to better protect the fruits of our loins.

Let them stay in the womb, so they don't get a wound. Makes much more sense.

If you are incapable of having a rational discussion, it may be better not to say anything than to persistently try to bait me with sarcasm. It's not working, in case you haven't noticed. I know you are a grown woman and capable of grasping what I am saying without resorting to sarcastic retorts.

There is your example.

Yeah, I watch/read the news. Multiple sources per day, every day. And what I see there disgusts me with an alarming regularity.

When your experience is constant exposure to the worst that people do, is it a suprise when all you see is the worst part of a person?

As a survivor of more than a few things that you probably saw on the news, I have to say, this is a very sad way to live
It is important to care about your safety, ut there is a line between that and keeping yourself armed at all times, including the shower and when you sleep in order to feel just a little safe

I hope that I misread you and that you arent in that world

So then by this arguement we SHOULD let women breastfeed in public, where they will HAVE that support if needed?

Women are going to do what they are going to do. I cannot stop them, nor would I want to. However, as I've said me and 'mine' will not be participating.

And I have seen numerous incidents where it didn't matter where the person was, how many cameras were there, or who was around. In some cases, the bystanders did nothing but watch.

Nice try. That didn't get posted until after the 4th or 5th sarcastic, childish response. You cannot say that my berating led to the sarcasm when the sarcasm happened first. Good attempt though.

At least two seperate women here have said the same thing as I have -- it's about being decent. Just because it's a natural thing doesn't mean you can drop all manner of class and be crude about it because it's 'your right.'

There is middle ground. Me and mine won't be doing such things in public. You might or might have. Neither of us has say over what the other does. However we can at least agree that one should try and be discreet and not flaunt things in front of folks.
This is exactly what it is about. I was a breast feeding mom, yet i would not appreciate seeing a woman wiz out the boob to feed the kid. I wore modified baggy sweatshirts in the summer (sleeves and neck cut off with a tank underneath) for modesty. There is no reason for flashing.

But Loki...i do have an issue with the security concerns you expressed. If there is a jerk out there who will target a woman with a baby, she is vulnerable no matter what she is doing.
If i were approached, nursing or pushing the child in a stroller, my first thought is to protect the baby and my reaction would be to throw my purse/wallet at him so he leaves.

I'm not 'that' paranoid. Just paranoid enough to be overly cautious. It may seem sad to some, but so far it's kept me safe. However, I don't have to worry about that 'too' much as I have one of those looks and physiques that tends to intimidate people regardless. Few people fuck with me.

Ignoring your first response as it was pointless

the difference that you arent seeing because you arent actually there, if someone is going to hurt you in a crowded, camerad area they wont hesitate no matter what you are doing, except maybe, and this is a BIG maybe if you are actively pointing a gun at them, they wont care if there is a bottle in your hand or a tit in your kid's mouth

Actually, good attempt on your part. I don't believe I said anything about which came first. It wasn't a chicken or egg point. Reminds me of trying to debate a drunk. Around and around in circles.

I  came upon an article about a woman who was asked to leave a local McDonalds for breastfeeding her 4-month old.

My question to you all is how do you feel about public breastfeeding?

Until humanity grows up and shuffles off much of its pathological taboos about nudity, breastfeeding in public will no doubt always stir our dumb little pots. Clothing makes sense when it makes sense. Insisting a mother be wrapped up to the exclusion of her ability to breastfeed her child is an example of our collective lechery and paranoia gone amok. Thank you, patriarchal religions of the world.

If a woman just presses a little on the top of her milk-engorged breast, a large concentrated jet of hot milk can be conveniently squeezed into the eye of any potential predator  .

True, but you can still be more vulnerable at some times than you are at others. Vulnerability isn't a yes or no question. It's a scale. You're safer in your car than on foot, you're safer in your home than in your car. It's a wildly variable equation.

I expected this response. To which I shall reply with the following:

You said "Oh so it's ok for you to do x, but not for her to do y?" And the point is, I wasn't doing "x" until she did "y." I was keeping things nice and civil and having a very mature discussion.

Had she not repeatedly been sarcastic with me, I wouldn't have replied that way. Ergo, her actions led to an appropriate response.

i have just finished reading through all this and have one thing to ask Loki.... i am pretty sure that false imprisonment is illegal.... Are you honestly saying that if you had a wife who gave birth, you would keep her in effect locked up until the child stopped breastfeeding???

On a more to the point note - i breastfed both my children for as long as i could (sadly not as long as i had wanted for medical reasons).  It is a natural, normal thing.  Once or twice i had to resort to using public toilets, which in my opinion is unacceptable and i complained to the management of those places.  i was at the time New Mothers Contact for my local branch of the National Childbirth Trust (a UK charity which helps and supports expectant and new mothers) and as such i was actively involved in educating and reassuring new mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding and their rights.  There is, i think, not only a responsibility on the part of the nursing mother to feed her child, but to also act in a decent manner.  No one will ordinarily complain about a nursing mother who is discretely feeding in a public place.  Yes, there are a few places where the management are less than clued up on the rights of women, but in general the public is very tolerant these days.  The benefits of breastfeeding are universally known and appreciated and only those who have personal isues with it have problems.   i would suggest that it is those people and not the nursing mothers, who should live like hermits at home.  That way they cannot possibly end up offended by anything....

Just my opinion *smiles*

My statement wasn't about will they or won't they, but about what position YOU find yourself in should they. You're right, criminals will do what they will do. Would you rather they catch you 'with your pants down' or when you are ready to defend yourself? Why add a level of vulnerability when you don't have to?

true...but as the wonderful LadyH eluded to...if someone is a threat to our child, most of us moms can and would beat the shit out of Chuck Norris
