I think there's a lot of people out there who completely get off on dragging Christianity down and there are the double standards to prove it. However, what makes me believe that the authority of the bible is ever so powerful is that it is the most talked about religion, the most disliked, and often argued & debated the most. If Christianity was not important no one would care. It would be another religious journey. But for some reason to prove or disprove the bible and its faith has become a big flag waving march for many.

Thus to me this proves the Christian faith and the authority of the bible has relevance. The more people argue and rage over Christianity the more merit it gives believers that Christianity is the right place and path to walk.

Again, there is more than one Bible.

Technically The Book of Latter Day Saints is "The Bible".

The King James Bible is NOT the same Bible that gulags-worth of Russians died for and over.

To the author of this thread, I reiterate:  WHICH Bible?

Personally I dont believe in any bible as absolute truth.. I don't follow a god who would send people to hell because his feelings got hurt, from them not believing in him. Even if that nitemare was true, what about those who predated jesus?

Nay, i dont follow that type of brainwashing.

The reason people feel compelled to dispute the teachings of christianity is because so many of the people who practice it - or claim to practice it - insist on shoving it down our throats and demanding we live our lives in accordance with their religious beliefs.

And no, I'm not talking about you personally; I don't know anything about you. I don't mean to offend you. But christians in general have been hammering their religion into everybody else's heads for centuries. Every time we turn around, some christian somewhere is trying to pass some law that would require public schools to teach our kids about their ignorant religious beliefs, or prevent our kids from learning about science, or require us to follow their religion's rules about birth control, or whatever. I could type for hours about all the ways christians have tried to force non-believers to live by the rules of their religion, and never repeat myself. But I think you get the point. You christians stop beating us over the head with your faith, and leave us the hell alone to live our own lives the way we please, and we'll have no further reason to argue religion with you.

The bible was written in Greek and translated 99% correctly. Yes there are many "bibles" but the actually best translated bible was the original King James Version. The NKJV was written because for some reason people was unable to understand the KJV. Meaning most people read at a 8th grade level- so it had to be re-written and translated so those could understand it. Personally, I prefer the go ole KJV. The Authorized bible was translated by the Gideons ( not much changed there) you know the ones you find in motels? Or least did find there. New International Versions- I don't care for they are translated too politically correct. However the Messianic Jewish Bible has some very accurate translations from the Greek version plus since it is Jewish you get a better understanding of the Hebrew faith.

There will be translations through out the years. However the one that is probably the most relevant is the Greek/Hebrew version and the KJV. I once did research on the biblical translations and although King James used the bible to gain what he wanted- it is the best translated bible.

also, knees2you:

which Christian?

The Gnostic?
The Catholic (which predates any Baptist derived splintergroup, meaning EVERY evengelical group)?
Baptist?
Greek Orthodox?
Irish Catholic (Viewed as semi Pagan by Opus Dei)
Opus Dei?
Separatist ToySoldierCamp loving Wackjobs?
JewsForChrist?

see, since ONE of them have to be right, and the others "lose everything" as you put it, that means you yourself have (at least) a one in 8 chance of "losing everything".

a 7 horse derby gives better odds.

Hope you either have that lucky 7 ticket or a real good ice machine for the afterlife, Knees2.

I say this as someone who's enjoyed First Communion, btw.

I'm sure some ex-Mormon chicks on this site would also raise an eyebrow at your post.

Not to mention, taking only the pieces they want to live by, or others to live by, and ignoring the rest. I think that chaps my ass more than anything else.

"The bible was written in Greek and translated 99% correctly"

Except for that "Red Sea" instead of "Sea of Reeds" gaff.

And if that gaff can be made...

Actually the original was written in greek, hebrew, aramaic, syriac and latin........if I remember correctly.

And unless you know ALL of those languages, and have all of the original transcripts, including those pope Gregory deemed unfit and had removed, in addition to earlier exclusions, you are simply babbling when you say it is 99% correct.

Corrected. Although the New King James Bible, like all other translations, is not perfect, it is a more accurate rendering of the Greek than the King James Version and is less likely to puzzle the reader. This is an especially good translation for people with a Wesleyan or Eastern Orthodox background. The New Testament of this version was chosen to serve as the basis for an Eastern Orthodox study Bible.

No babbling made a simple error.

And welcome to the boards, by the way. It gets contentious here sometimes, and you did happen to jump right into the thick of one of our most prickly briar patches. Please don't be deterred. Most of us are reasonably decent people, in spite of our prodigious efforts to conceal that.

There's no way that's the case.  Which isn't the fault of the translators- directly translating from Ancient Greek to English simply isn't possible.  There's far too many phrases that simply don't exist in English.

Which is why, to actually understand the Bible, people need to have a basic grasp of the various translation issues, particuarly when you look at the more contentious passage.

(As an aside, if you're a Christian, isn't your username extremely blasphemous?)

The only authority on the bible are the original writers of each section. Even then that is highly subjective since they wrote from their own point of view...thus it is biased. It isn't difficult to comprehend that anything which is biased loses a fair amount of accuracy.

The Bible is a combination of various works of fiction/legend (including the 4 Gospels), Jewish tribal history, and commentary/opinion essays. It has no more authority than any other such omnibus collection. It is literature, not divine revelation. End of story.

I did not ask for an argument.  I put together an intelligent and articulate 3-4 paragraph 'letter'.  I agree I was fairly confident this would happen but I was hopeful an intelligent dialogue would begin.  I was hopeful someone would outline compelling reason to accept the bible as an authority.  I was also hopeful they would be able to demonstrate why these reasons ought to be accepted by every one.  Suprise! this has not happened.  Instead this has.

Keep in mind only Christians not Baptist, Catholics or so many of the other 'branches' are included:
quote:

81% of American adults identify themselves with a specific religion: 76.5% (159 million) of Americans identify themselves as Christian. Source: <http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_prac2.htm>

quote:

The United States is described in mainstream media as largely Christian (between 70 and 80 percent, depending on the study, identify themselves as “Christian”), and compared to the rest of the world

quote:

Christianity 151,225,000 159,030,000 224,437,959 76.5% +5%

It is all in your head, darlin.  The attack, the war the assault against Christianity is all in your head and there are the facts to prove it.  However, I understand part of your religious belief is to believe you are under attack.  If you truly want to be under attack for your belief based upon some text in your hold book move to the middle east.

ESinn

**Edit:  I think a lot of religious people dream up situations where they are the victim.  This gives them a reason to pray to their god for strength.  This gives them a reason to fight and that's when you know you are alive.

Personally i believe that all should accept God but i understand that all were given the freedom of choice and so must choose their own path... God suffers for every lost soul i should know i was one of them... but my life choice was brought on by death and i am privileged to say i have chosen wisely. God kept me on this planet so that i may fullfill some purpose and he did for each of us. and before you say im some sort of religious freak... i was once lost as well and for many years i believed that god was some sort of macochist but i understand many things now .... im gonna stop now
