Nude on Lunchtime TV - 7/7/2009 2:13:04 AM

On Channel four yesterday, a new programme began.  It's a Life Drawing art class programme aimed at people who are at home during lunch and encouraging them to pick up a pencil and just draw.  Doesn't matter if you are good or not.  Doesn't mean you have to do it with anyone - just something to do at home.

There is a bit of discussion today, because the models were nude.  This has caused a bit of uproar because the programme is broadcast at lunchtime.  So - seeing as the programme is advertised as a life drawing class - would it shock you?  Do you find it an unacceptable time to be broadcast?

Wouldn't bother me at all.  I'd love to watch it actually.  My drawings tend to look like stick figures on crack.

Hi dark :) Though I could understand a parent objecting, there ARE blocks one can use on a tv to prevent those UM issues. Other than that, I'd enjoy the show.

I am assuming it is on a regular channel, as opposed to cable? If so...yep, i object.

was there a warning at the beginning of live drawing style nudity?

like here wgere we have warnings for Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders that there will be images of the Dead so they might be offended?

Well it's advertised as Life Drawing:Todays Nude - so I would say it was pretty clear what was going to be on the programme.  But I didn't see a warning directly before because I tuned in a bit late.  But it's been in the news so much that it was going to be on, so it should not really have been that much of a surprise.

It was simply a nude person standing model?

In this case, I have no objections at all. I do not want my UMs to see sexual acts, but seeing a nude body is not something I think they need to be shielded from. It is a body, everyone has one.

in this case, i change my opinion. If it is advertised as having nudity, it would be a poor reflection of my parenting that i allow my child to see it. I was under the impression it was a surprise to the viewer.

As to me personally...it would not bother me in the least.

frankly, as someone whom has taught fine art, many places and demographics would NOT see such as "clear".  And some poses are completely "pedestrian" bordering on Philistine (which I've drawn and even posed for) where as others (such as in places like Marin County or Santa Cruz CA) are - by say Ohio standards - VERY "naughty", but considerd tame by you and I.

Yep, I'd object. Nudity (especially as an art form) is such a horrible, shameful thing to subject anyone to.

Better the show be pre-empted by the current soap of the day in which Sluggo gets Betty preggers with triplets and Nancy blows a hole through ex boyfriend Billy cuz she heard he'd skull fucked cousin (and all around local slut) Jennifer behind the local bar last night. Alternatively they could always pre-empt with the latest Michael Jackson hoopla.

Fr to add information for people asking.

The programme with the nudes were no more than the usual 'standard' model.  Man standing frontal, woman reclining, back of nude etc.  Nothing 'explicit' in terms of nudity.  Less provocative than your average renaissance painting or statue.  The emphasis on the programme was teaching the basics and how to aboid the usual hiccups people get when first attempting to draw.

Then if there was the appropriate warning, I csan't see the problem, except as per the communities that forbade exhibition of Michelangelo's David on the basis of "he's showin'dat dere DINGUS, dat's jus' POR-NO-GRAPHIC!"

Why would it reflect badly on your parenting skills to let him see a nude body?

I see nothing wrong with it at all. In fact if the programme helps to remove some of the stigma for some people connected with their bodies I see it as something very positive.

What I find more shocking is that art has been given a lunch time slot and is being promoted by one of the major TV channels but this is a very positive shock.

Kudos to Channel Four.

*sends loads of love to Darcy and thedark*

Personally, given the name of the programme, I cant see why people would get up in arms about it.  Seems pretty obvious, to me.

I personally wouldnt mind, in fact, I'd enjoy it, since I am a frustrated artist...LOL

not at all.  age of viewers---irrelevant at this house and seriously, the very last thing any child should be doing during their day is watching TV...especially during lunchtime!!!

sure it would, if he was flipping through the channels. If he were exposed to the human body (which is normal and natural), i would very much prefer it be viewed with a parent, rather than by himself, wondering "what's dat?"

I am a little surprised by that.  I just never left the children alone to flip channels at that age (three).  The remote was high out of reach, apart from flipping, it's a health risk.  Saying that though, I never had the TV on unless it was TillyTomandTiny at 4pm.  Like beth said before, why are children at that age (in the UK non school age would be up to the age of 4) watching TV at that time alone or not?
