But I challenge anyone who listened to her speeches, announcing her intent to resign and the recent resignation speech, to tell me you would feel comfortable with this woman in the Oval Office. Oh, don't misunderstand me, I would most definitely NOT feel comfortable with her anywhere near the Oval Office, but I also think she has about the same chance of getting there as I do. That's why I wonder about the fixation on her, both on here and in the media...she had her 15 minutes and now she is irrelevant. Why is what church she goes to, or whatever bizarre position she holds on whatever topic of any importance, she isn't even Governor of Alaska any more. If the GOP does run her in 2012, then we have a 2nd term for Obama. Arpig, I'll attempt to give you my thoughts on the subject. The issue is a class, cultural and ideological issue, all rolled up into one person. Despite what you see and hear constantly on CM and in the media, Palin strikes a cord with many Americans. That cord is primarily based on a strain of American thought and belief that is pretty much the historical bedrock of the nation. She isn't from the elite class of Americans. She doesn't vacation in Martha's Vineyard, and she doesn't play the "fumble and fuck" game of the power brokers in the DC area, or of party politics (the Republican Party in Alaska is NOT her friend). She comes from plain and ordinary roots. She struggled to get herself through college (and wasn't handed a four year paid trust fund to get her through an Ivy League college from her parents). She has struggled to raise her family on a budget. She is unapologetically religious, and has shown that she's willing to live her beliefs - beliefs which are antithetical to to core of the liberal elites in the US (think abortion). She's a woman who has sought, and achieved political power, while at the same time disregarding current left wing tenets of "feminism" and she's damn unapologetic about that as well. In other words, she's about as anti-elitist as they come in a politician who has gone as far as she has, and her success in her life are a direct challenge to both elitist good-buddy power system, and to the left-wing liberal belief system. They HAVE to destroy her, to make a lie of her as a model, and to besmirch her beliefs, otherwise everything that they believe, and everything that they wish the rest of America to believe will be undermined. She actually frightens them. And badly. And because they are frightened, they do what many people do to anyone who they don't quite understand, and that they think threatens them: they attack. They attack emotionally, and they attack any little thing that they feel can hurt her. They attack in a frenzy, like sharks feeding on chum. Balance, truth, fair-play, innocence ... all out of the window. Like a Jesus to the Philistines, like a Martin Luther to the Catholic Church, like Ghandi to the British Empire in India ... if she gets traction, she has the possibility of upsetting a lot of applecarts that have been built over the past decades. That is why they attack her. Oh, I'll admit, some people have perfectly valid reasons for disliking her, for believing she shouldn't hold office, and they can express them and I respect them. But many people - especially politically powerless followers of left liberal beliefs - may not understand their own hatred, or even acknowledge it. But like "good little soldiers", they unconsciously believe that they can solidify their own beliefs, that they can gain greater credibility with the "liberal church" by being attack dogs. And it's kinda liberating to hate and vilify someone that "everyone" agrees deserves that hate. It's a cathartic expression of solidarity for the powerless underlings of the left who wish to experience righteous anger and indignation, and who can safely vent on an object that has been deemed anathema, heretic, and blasphemer. Just my thoughts, anyway. I'm sure others will disagree. [:D] Firm
