Now, I dunno...but that sounds pretty racist to Me...and I know that not all black people are like this, but there are quite a few that I've run into in My life...does it bother Me? Not really...because I know that blacks aren't the only ones to have suffered slavery in this country, yeah, they prettied it up and called it indentured servitude, but it was still slavery...only the people holding those contracts weren't obligated to provide for the well being of the contractee...*shrugs* My point with all this is simple, as My Grandfather once told Me  "Learn from the past, don't live in it."  Wise words from a wise Man. And if anyone is wondering, no, My Grandfather wasn't what you might call white...he was Sicilian...and suffered quite a bit of ethnic slurs in this country when he first came here in the early 20's including being called a "fucking dago wap".   In the words of another, equally wise Man...Stan Lee...
" 'Nuff said."

No shit?  Your grandfather suffered ethnic slurs?

Was he beaten, chained, and hauled to a distant country to be used as a slave?

As for your first point, to try to say indentured servitude was equivalent to slavery is a willful disregard of history.

My history had a great uncle who immigrated to the steel town in NE Ohio. Seems the poor 6' white (er.. Caucasion-European) committed suicide by hanging himself in a 5' high basement with stab wounds in his back. We survived... and all with no reparations.. no apologies.

Indentured Servants in colonial America were, for the most part, adult white persons who were bound to labor for a period of years. There were three well-known classes: the free-willers, or redemptioners; those who were enticed to leave their home country out of poverty or who were kidnapped for political or religious reasons; and convicts. The first class represented those who chose to bind themselves to labor for a definite time to pay for their passage to America. The best known of these were Germans, but many English and Scottish men and women came in the same way. The second class, those who came to escape poverty or were forcibly brought to the colonies, was large because of the scarcity of labor in America. Their services were profitably sold to plantation owners or farmers, who indentured them for a period of years. The third class, convicts, were sentenced to deportation and on arrival in America were indentured unless they had personal funds to maintain themselves. Seven years was a common term of such service. The West Indies and Maryland appear to have received the largest number of immigrants of the third class.

The sad thing is with all the serious problems in the world, people
are spending as much time and energy on this as:
Michael Jackson.

At least with Michael, the legacy of his music will  live on.
Not sure what people get out of this endless debate.

All the many serious problems in the world............

I think Henry over reacted. I work 2nd shift and get pulled over every now and then at 3 a.m. A few times I have had a cop pull up to my driveway when I get out of the car. I just simply tell him what I am doing, show my drivers license if he ask and its over, no big deal.

Obama-Haters Becoming Increasingly...Racial In Their Rhetoric

An interesting pattern has emerged in the last few weeks, as President Obama's ratings have started to come down to Earth: You can really see a type of Obama-hatred out there that really does cross over into a purely racial territory.

This has gotten especially worse in the aftermath of Obama's comments and subsequent mea culpa on the Henry Louis Gates arrest, but the pattern has been there all the same. You can look back to the 2008 campaign, with the Jeremiah Wright controversies, the phony rumors of a tape of Michelle Obama defaming whites, and the slow but steady emergence of the Birthers. And these days, the Birthers seem to be getting more and more bellicose.

Mia, it's not the responsibility of the U.S. to solve the "world's" problems.
When are they going to get up off their asses and start solving their own problems?

Both sides have become more racial. It might have something to do with inappropriate statements by a President about something he knew too little about in defense of someone solely because he was black and a friend.

Being of Irish descent and having ancesters who immigrated (legally) to the U.S. in the late 1800's and early 1900's I don't share or participate in this "collective guilt" that some people like to engage in.
Does it somehow make them "feel better" to do so?
My ancesters (Irish Catholics) were slaves under the English "penal laws" which I first heard about from stories passed down to my mother and father.
Do the same people who "feel guilty" for slavery in the U.S. in the past have any of that guilt left over for the Irish? We want "reparations" too!
It'd be great to get a check from the British Exchequer for L 100,000.
Other than historical referance "slavery in the U.S." just doesn't mean anything to me. None of my people were here then!

fuck it... if everyone else is getting paid.. i want mine.. first!!! cus my people were here.. first!!! and they were slaves... first!!! at least in the good ole USA

I agree, and at least according to my father, our family owned slaves a few generations back and I have no doubt that I would not be considered "white" under the historical 94% pure standard. (99.4%?? ...whatever that % was). So I guess I can expect a check also.

Obama Mishandled Comments on Race

""Look, the president doesn't spend a whole lot of time focused on polling," Gibbs said. "The president isn't fixated on the ups and downs in polling. If we were, we'd have quit two years ago this summer, if ever even run for president."

Fire up ye olde time machine, Esinn.

I'd say that at the very least, that's certainly not helping. That was a foolish, rash, and very disappointing thing to say. It seems as though every week, he does at least one more thing to reinforce the perception that he really isn't ready for prime time after all.

Some of us didnt need that reinforcement, but hopefully those who did are getting the message.

I still think he's lightyears ahead of where McCain would have been, but Hillary is starting to look like a hell of a lot better candidate in the rearview mirror then she did when she was in the headlights.

Sorry, but at least McCain knew what he didn't know. Obama thinks he knows everything about everything, and thats as bad as it can possibly get in a leader. Hillary would clearly have been more moderate than Obama (who wouldnt have been other than Noam Chomsky and Paul Krugman), and I learned my "be careful what you wish for" lesson in believing "Anybody but Hillary".

StrangerThan -> RE: The arrest of Henry Louis Gates: How far have we really come? (7/30/2009 4:57:25 PM)

Far enough that if one identifies race in the report of a suspected crime, one is considered racist - and where one is considered racist when one didn't identify race - and where those who accused, accosted, and threatened said reporter of the crime feel no shame and no reason to apologize.

Far enough that folks cry racism over something any idiot should know, i.e. that when a cop is belligerant or demanding, the last thing you do is piss him off further.

This comes from a man who had to calm a police officer down at a traffic accident. Cop happened to be black, but I guess it makes me racist to say that.

Bottom line is this. I don't care who you are. When you are approached by any police officer, he has the law on his side in just about every case imaginable, whether it be to simply drag your ass in overnight or let you go.

As for the rest, including those who need to feel some kind of guilt where there is none, cry me a fucking river. I'm one of the indentured servant descendants and from a family too poor to have ever owned anyone, including themselves. While I will defend to the death the right of equality, I refuse to bend over backwards for anyone. I spent too much time in the fields as a kid busting my ass just to have food to ever feel elitist because my skin happened to be white.

That's the problem in Washington, they just don't seem to care what the American People think or want!
If you ignore polls you're ignoring the American People! HELLO!!!
