Obama Mishandled Comments on Race

""Look, the president doesn't spend a whole lot of time focused on polling," Gibbs said. "The president isn't fixated on the ups and downs in polling. If we were, we'd have quit two years ago this summer, if ever even run for president."

Fire up ye olde time machine, Esinn.

That's the problem in Washington, they just don't seem to care what the American People think or want!
If you ignore polls you're ignoring the American People! HELLO!!!

Believe me, they watch every movement in every poll and fashion their message so it sounds like they are delivering what people want. Just read Obamas health care speeches sequentially and you will find some buzzwords disappear, others appear, denial of features of the bill that are actually still there etc.

A leader takes into consideration the opinions of the people, but after weighing all of them with the benefit of his own or his staff's expertise shapes policy that best serves the people. He doesnt pander to them.

Obama-Haters Becoming Increasingly...Racial In Their Rhetoric

An interesting pattern has emerged in the last few weeks, as President Obama's ratings have started to come down to Earth: You can really see a type of Obama-hatred out there that really does cross over into a purely racial territory.

This has gotten especially worse in the aftermath of Obama's comments and subsequent mea culpa on the Henry Louis Gates arrest, but the pattern has been there all the same. You can look back to the 2008 campaign, with the Jeremiah Wright controversies, the phony rumors of a tape of Michelle Obama defaming whites, and the slow but steady emergence of the Birthers. And these days, the Birthers seem to be getting more and more bellicose.

What I don't understand is how it's wrong to disrespect someone based on their ethnic background WHILE promoting someone else based on it! An achievement is an achievement. I don't think what you look like should be a factor at all.

I think Mr. Obama screwed up by weighing in on this in the first place. He should have realized that, as President, anything he says is going to be scrutinized and sensationalized. A minimal answer such as "We have more important things to discuss" would have served him MUCH better. When it did blow up in his face, I think he should have apologized right away. That would have killed it and even provided him with an opportunity to demonstrate taking responsibility for a screwup.

What does "birther" mean?
And yes, Obama shouldn't be getting involved in "local" issues like this. What if he started talking about "sobriety checkpoints in Cleveland?"
Or building new fire stations in Maine? I mean what the hell...

The officer's gave him far more respect than I would have. If there was any suspicous activity around his place.. I hope his neighbors ignore it. A jerk is a jerk is a jerk :/

I think Obama had NO right getting involved with this or even COMMENTING on it in any way especially the way he did. If it was a WHITE President rescuing his WHITE friend from Police all hell would have broke loose. Personally, i don't think the charges should have been dropped and i feel that the guy should have had to go through the system just like 2179032172901201328198 other people have to when they don't agree with their being arrested. I mean hell i can tell you this much if this black guy had his house broken into and someone on the street called it in and the cops didn't DO everything they could to make sure his home was secure he would have been bitching cops don't protect black people. People like this make me sick. Personally, I think the president owes not only the POLICE department an apology but also everyone for butting into something that was none of his concern because he doesn't butt his nose into ever issue black people have with officers and he shouldn't do it just cause it was a friend.

And i think people should note and OBAMA should make a statement about how his friend someone thinks he is ABOVE the law because everyone should know WHO HE IS. That in and of itself should have Obama making it clear no one should be above the law no matter who they are.

I totally agree. This guy is even more arrogant than Bush was. He needs to learn when to shut his damn mouth, get off his high horse,  and stop condescending  to people. I can't tell you how discouraged and disappointed in him I've become. More and more, it seems clear he just isn't ready to lead after all, and this is just the latest example.

Hiya Level, I missed seeing you around these parts. Glad to see you're here in time for posting during the football season!

Regarding the mess at hand, isn't this funny - it turns out that Professor Gates is half Irish, and is even related to the cop he'll be meeting at the White House over a "brewski". That should make for some interesting conversation! [:D]

Hey Sanity; thanks for the welcome back. I'm not sure if I'll make it until kickoff, though :( Money is tight, and this internet connection is pricey, and not worth a damn, so, we'll see.

Yeah.. just like Dubya did with Scooter Libby. POTUS just wasn't sneaky enough.

'Impeach Obama' bumper stickers spark a shopping mall protest

Spivack has contended that he's being kicked out of the mall for political reasons. He's traced his exile to a letter to the editor in the Charlotte Observer criticizing his business, saying it promotes “ideas such as racism, sexism and even slavery.”

What does "birther" mean?

They are right wing whackjobs who think Obama was born in Kenya and should not be president. I think they want him picked up as an illegal immigrant and deported.

Humor about the birthers
Conspiracy Theorists Continue To Demand To See Obama's Death Certificate

"Look, even the most idiotic individuals among us can understand that Obama was indeed born in 1961 in Hawaii -- his birth certificate proves that," said Cook. "Nobody is here to argue anything fishy about his birth. What we're suggesting is far more sinister and believable: that he died of Hawaii Island Voodoo Disease (HIV-D) shortly after being born, and has roamed the Earth as a zombie ever since."

The kiosk guy can sell what he wants. He has yet to prove that what he sells is the problem. As the article states, other stores are also selling these items. The Mall also has the right not to renew leases. They dont need to give a reason. Just like the kiosk guy could not renew for his own reason. Maybe the Mall got offered more money, maybe they just dont want him there. Its their right to not renew.

Here are the letters in the Charlotte Observer

quote:

Concord Mills complacent in letting bigoted products be sold

Over the past weekend Concord Mills introduced consumers to a new kind of ignorance. “Free Market Warrior,” a kiosk located adjacent to Bass Pro Shops, specializes in memorabilia embellished with pro-Confederacy statements. In addition, these products support ideas such as racism, sexism and even slavery. While freedom of speech is a constitutional right, it's difficult not to believe that something just isn't quite right here.

It's 2009; please, let's at least try to put this type of bigotry to an end.

Jennifer Ibanez

quote:

Free speech applies to all, even Free Market Warrior customers

The writer owns Free Market Warrior at Concord Mills Mall.

Free Market Warrior sells a wide variety of products to numerous members of the community, and the response has been very positive.

Like letter writer Jennifer Ibanez, we abhor racism, slavery or any acts of bigotry. In fact, we promote free market principles, which can reduce these negative influences in our society.

After all, the greatest cause of slavery around the world is authoritarian government. By encouraging citizenship and economic and political freedom, we are empowering Americans to stand up for their rights and beliefs against politicians who would encroach on them.

This free expression is the antithesis of slavery. And while there is no doubt that the election of America's first African American president is a great step away from racism, an even bigger step will be taken when he can be criticized just the same as any other president.

I tend to agree, he may very well have been booted out for the merchandise he sold. but.. guess what.. his lease was up. not much can be done about it. i dont even think suing would do any good.

What weight do you give to a police report?  Some attorneys read them just to find out what the officer is going to say.  Whether the content of a police report is accurate is an entirely different question. Does a police report glow gold is it is truthful and red if the content is false?  What color does it glow if the report is part accurate and part  inaccurate?

Ann Coulter on LKL: Police Aren’t Pulling Over Enough Black People
Ann Coulter and the Rev. Al Sharpton appeared on Larry King Live on Thursday night, and Coulter had some interesting comments about racial profiling: we need to do more of it, apparently.

As I observed Obama, Gates and Crowley sitting together, it seemed apparent to me that none of them wanted to be there without a weapon in hand.  Of course my man, Joe Biden, broke the ice by giving a learned spiel about nuclear arms proliferation and kept the conversation going by justifying foreign  aid to Mozambique. May the fates smile on Joe.  I would gladly have a beer with him any day.

Jumpthrough.

The sheer number of posts on this thread proves that racism is alive and well. This thread would not even EXIST if the cop and the professor were of the same race. Case closed.

Remember that the next time y'all accuse me.

Say it with roses: Harvard prof sends gift to 911 caller
(CNN) -- The woman who made the 911 call that led to Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates' controversial arrest wasn't present at the so-called beer summit.

But she got a shot of kindness and a taste of gratitude from Gates himself.
Lucia Whalen received a bouquet of flowers at her office from Gates, according to Whalen's attorney, Wendy Murphy.

I give it a lot of weight.. especially when I saw the jerk mounthing off like a pmsing school girl. How much proof do you need???? I guess the only solution is to send Black officers to deal with Black folk , White officers to deal with White folk, Asian officers to deal with Asian folk and Native American officers to deal with Native American folk.
