Loric -> RE: The arrest of Henry Louis Gates: How far have we really come? (7/28/2009 4:29:25 PM)

FR some of the comments here reminded Me of a thing that happened to Me a few years ago...now, obviously I'm a white male...with a bit of Cherokee, but that's not the point...I LOOK like a white male and that very much is the point of this whole story. I once owned, as I'm sure perhaps many out there have, an old beat up pickup truck (a 3/4 ton ford)...it happened to be orange, and the junk yard I bought it from had used it to haul out cars that were stuck in "the back 40". In the back window sealed between two panes of glass was a confederate flag...now, the job I had didn't really pay enough for Me to be able to afford the 2000 dollars it was going to cost to get a new rear window in the truck, so I just left it as is. This of course, caused problems while I was driving the vehicle, not because I couldn't see out the window, but rather with law enforcement officers. I made sure that the vehicle was in proper working condition every time I drove it, a holdover from My Army days...(gotta love PMCS) which means that all the lights were working etc. yet I was still pulled over in this truck by the same officer, every day. The officer in question happened to be black, and I cooperated with him at every turn, showing insurance, DL, registration, etc. A friend of Mine happened to be with Me during one of these, for Me, routine stops and asked the officer why we had been pulled over to which the officer replied "I don't like that flag in the window, white folks like you two seem to think that slavery was an ok thing and it wasn't." Now, I dunno...but that sounds pretty racist to Me...and I know that not all black people are like this, but there are quite a few that I've run into in My life...does it bother Me? Not really...because I know that blacks aren't the only ones to have suffered slavery in this country, yeah, they prettied it up and called it indentured servitude, but it was still slavery...only the people holding those contracts weren't obligated to provide for the well being of the contractee...*shrugs* My point with all this is simple, as My Grandfather once told Me "Learn from the past, don't live in it." Wise words from a wise Man. And if anyone is wondering, no, My Grandfather wasn't what you might call white...he was Sicilian...and suffered quite a bit of ethnic slurs in this country when he first came here in the early 20's including being called a "fucking dago wap". In the words of another, equally wise Man...Stan Lee... " 'Nuff said."
