Minimium Wage Rant - 8/9/2009 6:59:56 AM

This new minimum wage law sucks.   Since it has been implimented, our company has cut every one down to four days.
I am getting 20 hours weekly,  and I have a house.  Not only that, I live in a state where manufacturing has been hit very hard, and there are no other jobs to go to work.
I am stuck.

I guess my final destination will be the big W!.

Best Wishes,

Mistress_Jan

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009.

The federal minimum wage has been increasing every year for the past three.

This is what happens when congress arbitrarily raises the minimum wage. Small business's are having trouble keeping afloat in this recession. Putting additional mandates on small business, especially now, is the wrong thing to do. Something has to give.

Not necessarily so, servant.

The minimum wage is still below market value. In fact, adjusted for inflation, it's still below its original value.

And businesses that need the labor can't just cut people for the hell of it. If labor is being trimmed back, it was excessive capacity. If there were truly work, they'd be hiring, even at a higher minimum.

And we're still WELL below Europe.

I guess it didn't work out that way for MissJanice. Her hours were cut after it was implimented, not before. The government put an additional burden on her company and she is the one suffering.

It has been in the works for three years. Its no surprise to any business. NOW they cut her hours? what is their excuse?

I am not familiar with her company. Maybe this was the straw that broke the camels back. If the money isn't there, it just isn't there.

They knew three years ago. To suddenly blame it on a 70 cent increase, regardless of how many workers, is bull. My question would be... how many of them will lose benefits because of this. then again, its also a known tactic to get people to quit when they dont want to pay out benefits for layoffs.

perhaps... and this is just a stretch in thought... they should have realized this a year ago and slowed down their hiring rate.

This is not 3 years ago. Business' are not making money right now. We are in a recession. I said this was the wrong time to impliment this and burden struggling companies.

This has been known for three years. The wage increase was made a law... 3 years ago. The set amounts for mandatory increases were known to all businesses... three years ago.

3 years ago people in the country had homes to live in. Now they are in forclosure. The economy changes, government policies won't. If MissJanice is fortunate her company will not shut is doors due to this increase.

We have been in a recession for.. what.. a year now? again... they knew this was coming. dont blame a three year old law for the ills of her company and the lack of planning on its part.

It is so funny -- tragic, but funny! -- to read comments by people without an economics background and/or who have never run a business!!!!!

What a hoot!

All you minimum wage lovers: Go hire some folks. Find out how it works! I mean, how you interview, fill out all the forms, spend your time figuring all the taxes to withhold, figuring which fucking signs to post, figuring out how to pay the worker's compensation insurance (especially you roofers -- gotta luv that 40% of wages!) -- train 'em and watch 'em go work for someone else, when when they came to you, they were worth NEGATIVE $75 an hour to you, because you had to slow down what you do, to train them, so your own productivity was cut in half.....

I hire a high school kid, I almost have to teach him to wipe his nose. And that's worth $7 an hour? Not!

Minimum wage hurts those with the least skills. But you dodo birds don't care about facts -- you just care about your FEELINGS, and since you WISH they were worth more, they must be!

Those of us in business, do not fire people because it gives us jollies.
We do not hire people at minimum wage because we think they are worth more.
Wake up!

They are hurting the LEAST EMPLOYABLE, the VERY MOST.

Oh -- and yeah -- businessmen are so prophetic -- they all KNEW the mortgage market was screwed up and about to deliver a 10 megaton nuclear warhead to our markets years before the existence of such a problem was known by the general public.

Wow! Let's give them Nobel Prizes! As a class! All businessmen, stand up, and get your honors for knowing everything was going to crater, but you told nobody else about it!

You aren't listening. You are assuming a causal relationship that makes no economic sense.

If a business had production needs, your premise is that they'd turn down the work rather than pay the wages? Hell, why not just close up shop? And why keep ANY workers at that rate?

No. They had payroll to cut, and they used the new law as an excuse to trim their excess capacity.

When they have new orders, they will hire new workers--at the higher rate.

And what crazy person thinks every potential employee has the same value?

Every person is different. Everyone has their own unique "market value."

One market value for all labor? Someone is in la la land!

My gosh, we are in a DEFLATIONARY period.

The nominal prices of almost all goods has declined.

To expect the value of labor to go up in a deflationary period, is -- is -- childish!

What a hoot!

Mercurial,

It's not a WAGE law--it's a MINIMUM wage law.

That's why the vast majority of workers earn far greater wages. In no way is this one wage for all workers. Never has been.

So your excuse is that you have to hire a hich school kid in order to get your business done. tell me why i would come to your business, as an adult, to work for you for less than what it takes me to live. Many states raised their minimum wages far higher than the federal minimum, and seem to be doing just fine in light of the economy. Now, businesses have been raising their costs and profit line... but heaven help if the salary they pay out to employees are raised accordingly.

quote:

Federal Minimum Wage increase makes progress in Congress on April 20th, 2007

On April 20th, 2007 both the House of Representatives and Senate has reached deal on what has been stalling the Federal Minimum Wage increase. The negotiators for the House and the Senate have agreed on a business tax incentive package that will be accompanying the wage increase. For weeks the House and Senate has delayed the progress of the increase due to differences over how to ease the impact of raising the wage on small businesses.

The steps of the Federal Minimum Wage increase will still be in a three step increase. The increase, if in effect, will increase the Federal Minimum Wage to $5.85 per hour 60 days after the president signs the bill into law, then $6.55 per hour a year later and $7.25 per hour a year after that.

This was signed into law by then President Bush.

Now, i would appreciate you sticking to the thread and not lowering yourself to resorting to name calling... If you can handle that.
