DomThoughts -> Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 4:47:44 PM)

I made a comment to someone earlier today in a private message about the disparity between opening messages from women to men and from men to women.

I know there is a huge 'problem' with guys who simply copy and paste a very generic message to every woman's profile on the site, and it is those guys that make this place such a difficult to make connections.

My general approach is to read a profile and send a message accordingly, but have started to collect a notepad document of a few slightly generic lines, the thoughts that crop up and end up being said even when writing something reasonably unique.

So I suppose my question is, what is the general approach to private messages in here? does anybody else keep such a (small) collection of partial messages for inclusion in messages (should I be admitting that!) what are people's approaches to private messages?

and for the girls, what are your views on this, obviously you can spot the blanket copy and paste, but the more personalised ones, I'm curious as to what sort of ratios you get... (all part of my eternal drive to understand everything to the nth degree!)

Kinds regards....

Hmm. About one decent email from someone with manners and forethought, who has actually taken the time to read My profile, to every hundred or so of the usual kind. The sad thing is, I'm not even exaggerating, not a bit.

TearsofLove92 -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 4:51:57 PM)

I don't copy and paste messages, but if I initiate first contact my messages are short and to the point. Usually, it's a little poke, and if the person I'm poking turns around, I talk to them, and if they ignore it, I walk away.

I however understand the point of copying and pasting a message. Most everybody on here has a profile that say the same things, and the person copy and pasting doesn't feel the need to re-type the same thing in 200 different ways.

I always look for something special in a profile, and if I don't find it, I move on to the next one.

In conclusion, I think it comes down to "am I desperate enough to try EVERYBODY, or do I want somebody that meets my standards?"

InvisibleBlack -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 4:56:30 PM)

For an initial message? I take the time to write individual messages without copying or pasting anything. Generally, I don't write more than a paragraph or two until I know someone is willing to make a response.

My view kind of goes - the goal of the initial e-mail is to convince someone to look at your profile. The goal of the profile is to convince them to message you.

When I mail someone, it is because I have a specific comment, question, or thought to share. So I just write what it is that I need to write. Generally, they are completely hand-crafted.

That being said, I don't see any issue whatsoever with keeping little crib notes somewhere of useful thoughts. I do sometimes copy excerpts off my blog or someone else's web site that I think might be useful to further the discussion. In the end, it isn't the cut & paste operation that's the problem. If there is a problem, it's the fact that the message doesn't relate properly to the recipient and so gets rejected. So long as your final finished product is an actual, genuine communication from you to the specific individual, who cares where the pieces came from?

just to clarify, ALL messages I send are always 100% unique to whoever I happen to be writing to. sometimes they hit the spot sometimes they don't - I was curious about the whether anyone else keeps such a 'crib notes'

For instance I have a sign off that attempts to herd anyone who's attention I have caught towards my profile, which is where it started, I found I was writing something vaguely similar to sign off 90% of messages I sent (hmmm that makes me sound like a spammer!)

littlewonder -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 5:42:38 PM)

The majority of emails I receive are c/p and the majority of my emails get deleted.

I never c/p for any reason whatsoever.

But I would guess that that is the disparity between the message a woman sends and the message a man sends - a woman could send a message saying 'hi' to a 100 men in this place and would probably get a response from 99 of them. The same message sent by a man might, if he is exceptionally lucky get responded to by 1 woman. (I'm tempted to do an experiment)

I'd say that my success rate for getting a response to an opening message is maybe 10-20% I put that down largely to the fact that I am good with words, the sign off I have is a good example, because it works, it gets people reading my profile, which is the whole point. I found myself writing the same words far too many times.

Are these "we should hook up" messages? I'm asking only because my return rate is, I'm pretty sure, 100%. But then again, none of mine are any sort of proposal.

No, never 'we should hook up' usually passing interest / comments / thoughts / questions.

Though a proportion of those can probably be discounted for not quite getting my sense of humour!

Now I'm feeling ever so slightly inferior :P

IronBear -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 6:05:58 PM)

I copy/paste both messages and posts here and elsewhere when I have written them in Word as a means of countering my dyslexia. I do have a selection of Siggys and tag lines for use where there are no facilities to keep a permanent siggy/tag line and auto include it.

mmmm.... I always thought it made it easier..... So much easier for A rose to be seen in a bunch of weeds than A rose to be seen with a bunch of other roses.

and as far as your question..... each message is a key stroke at a time.... no copying and pastes of some file or stuff like that... just seems like waaaaaaaaay to much work.... I can type faster than it would take to do all that shit.

I dunno. I never send out random emails, never have. Never ever messaged someone with just "hi" or anything similar. I only message people when I find something extremely intriguing or interesting in their profile that leaves me wanting to know more which is a rare feat indeed or when someone has messaged me and I might respond back if I'm bored or they have a question they want an answer to.

The problem is men rarely ever read profiles and most women I think want to feel special so they want you to respond specifically to their profile.

If you can't make her feel as if you're genuinely interested in her why should she bother to reply? It would be a complete waste of her time.

I wasn't suggesting you would simply send a hi - the point was, the majority of men would respond to that. I have noticed you on the boards, and I couldn't imagine you would do that.

The only reason I do message someone is that I have found their profile interesting in some way - admittedly there are occasional random comments that amuse me, that I mostly expect to be ignored - I have certainly never messaged anyone without reading a profile, and when I do it is always with a genuine interest in something that is said there.

lovingpet -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 6:20:22 PM)

I really didn't have to send out many first messages, so this was never really an issue for me. The few I sent were definitely one of a kind...thank goodness. One could literally hear the nervous stammering when reading them. Sheesh. Whatever it is I did, I have never had a message go without response and some have landed me great friend and a wonderful partner!

LadyPact -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 6:24:10 PM)

I'm sure I'm not your demographic, but I will copy/paste certain things.

If I am sending an email specifically regarding a post, I will copy what the person wrote on a thread so they know what I am contacting them in reference to.

I will copy/paste data that I'm retrieving from other sources.  I have several written documents (Mine, not plagiarized) that I use for some of the presentations that I've done.  Basically, the handouts that a person would get if they attended a demo.

I'll copy/paste information that I have in private email about locations for events, etc.

As for personal correspondence, no, I don't have certain things stashed so I could save the keystrokes.  If I tell someone that they need to read the profile, rather than just look at it, or that the word "local" appears in My profile three times, even though they contacted Me from great distances, or anything of the other 'common' answers, I just type them up one answer at a time.

windchymes -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 6:36:47 PM)

I personally don't copy and paste anything in my emails unless I specifically wanted to quote something and then comment on it.  Otherwise, like KoM, I can have it all typed out, backspaced and typos corrected way before I'd be able to do all the click & drag highlight, right click, copy, find, paste, etc. etc. etc.

As far as receiving them, when I receive long, descriptive, and/or especially melodramatic, overly romanticised, sucking up-type cut & paste emails, I usually don't make it through reading the whole thing.  I can see the point from the sender of keeping a stock introductory email rather than type the same thing over and over to different women, but when receiving one, I can't help but assume that he's sent this same introduction to 100 other women, so he's got plenty to keep himself busy without adding my reply to the mixture.  Also, it says to me that he's "fishing"....send it out 100 times and hope one or two come back...any two.  "Just somebody, please answer me!!!" lol

I never search and cold call on here.
I have rarely emailed anyone who has been viewing me, except if they have that kind of je ne sais quois
The mail I do get probably distributes iyself along a skewed curve with its mesian range laying somewhere along the stupidity scale.
1 per sent of dom males have approached me as intelligent human beings and two out of literally hundreds of mails since May have blown me away......
they know who they are if they are reading this.
Unique, special men...it does happen.
So to all of you: 'I want u, to own you and wish I was banging your head against a brick wall while fuckin you ard right now.....' I have this to say........
I'm at the office right now and will probably remain there for the rest of your life.

pompeii -> RE: Do you Copy and Paste messages? (8/24/2009 8:43:38 PM)

I don't send many unsolicited messages, perhaps a dozen in a year, and even then, only to submissive women, within 20 miles, who have been logged in as recently as the same month, and who are older than 30 and slimmer than 140 pounds.

Given that there are only about a dozen prospective ladies, it behooves me to read their profile, peruse their forum posts, and study their journal. Then, and only then, do I write them an introductory missive - which - more often than not, gets me no reply whatsoever.

So, maybe my system is the wrong one ('cuz it's not working very well at all). Sigh.

Perhaps I should cut-and-paste to every single woman here next time ... huh? You think that will work better than nearly zero?

it is rare that i will initiate dialogue unless i see something that truly catches my eye in their profile. other than this i have been known to send a compliment for those i find well articulated. doing such doesn't imply interest on my end, sometimes i'm sincerely impressed by what is said.

personalized notes are preferred and i always respond in kind. in regard to ratios, the ones i receive are generally of this nature.
